Investigando a cultura material e documentos escritos, buscamos inserir os grupos foqueiros, lobeiros e baleeiros na história do continente, frequentemente esquecidos e invisibilizados pelas metarranativas existentes. Nesse artigo, abordamos o universo relacionado aos cachimbos de caulim coletados na Ilha Livingston. Apresentando métodos de análise e interpretações resultantes, discutimos a construção de identidades generificadas associadas ao consumo de tabaco e suas materialidades. Analisando padrões decorativos dos cachimbos, marcas de fabricantes, o baixo preço da maioria das peças, o consumo excessivo de tabaco entre esses trabalhadores, a negação de regras burguesas relacionadas ao fumar e outros aspectos, tentamos entender as particularidades da masculinidade performatizada por esses marinheiros.

As part of the Landscapes in White project, developed in the Laboratory of Antarctic Studies in H... more As part of the Landscapes in White project, developed in the Laboratory of Antarctic Studies in Human Sciences - LEACH, UFMG, this study seeks to understand, from the vestiges of kaolin pipes, some aspects related to the whaling and sealing groups that went to Antarctica to hunt marine mammals, during the process of expansion of capitalism. The analised sites were dated, as well as discussions about the influence of smoking on the lives of these sailors when encamped in the extreme South were made. The study approached the hierarchies and their expressions, the sailors' choices, the places where they lived and their bodies, in relation to the practice of smoking and its materiality. For the composition of the analysis, 17 pieces of pipe were selected from 8 Antarctic archaeological sites. Also included in the research were 3 diaries of sealers and whalers, as well as 2 literature books, treated as sources for a better recognition of the practices of these groups. These subjects were found to be in Antarctic lands in the first half of the nineteenth century and that, while camping and traveling, smoking was part of “being a seaman". The perceptible adaptations in the pipes made by its users represent and accentuate their belonging to the working class of their time, while the homogeneity found in the decorations does not demonstrate differentiations between each of the subjects of the group. As for the places that smoking occupied in the lives of these hunters, it was possible to understand that this practice was presented at different times, locations and bodies. It can be affirmed that the bodies of the subjects and their pipes were connected and as such, they composed their perceptions of the world, of other subjects and their experiences. The marks left on the pipes, as well as the data collected in the diaries and books, when analised together, allowed to learn more about the experiences of those workers who are still little discussed in the history of the Antarctic continent.
