These threats are particularly troubling in the Procellariiformes (Aves), one of the most endangered bird groups. For “storm-petrels”, their cryptic breeding behavior, asynchrony between populations, and light pollution pose additional threats that contribute to increased mortality.Markham’s Storm-Petrel (Hydrobates markhami), a poorly known migratory species, is a pelagic bird that breeds in dispersed colonies in the Sechura and Atacama Deserts, with asynchronous reproduction between colonies, and is highly affected by artificial lights. Considering its complex conservation scenario and singular breeding, we expected to find narrow habitat distribution conditions, strong geographic genetic structure, and spatially differentiation related to human population activities (e.g., light pollution) and the climate global change. Natriuretic peptide C (NPPC) delays germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) while increasing oocyte-cumulus communication during in vitro maturation (IVM) in cattle. In the present study we first tested the hypothesis that steroids secreted by the follicle (17β-oestradiol, progesterone and androstenedione) interact with NPPC to delay GVBD and to maintain oocyte-cumulus communication as assessed by transfer of a dye (Lucifer Yellow) from the oocyte to cumulus cells. Then, we assessed the effects of steroid hormones and NPPC, alone and in combination in a pre-IVM culture, on embryo production. The combination of NPPC with steroids delayed GVDB, increased natriuretic peptide receptor 2 (NPR2) mRNA abundance in cumulus cells during culture, and maintained oocyte-cumulus communication at levels not different from non-cultur...

Intraovarian signaling molecules are being explored as potential additives to IVM media. One such factor is kit ligand (KITL), which stimulates the growth of oocytes. We determined if KITL enhances oocyte maturation in cattle. The two main isoforms of KITL (KITL1 and KITL2) were expressed in bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COC), and levels of mRNA increased during FSH-stimulated IVM. The addition of KITL to the culture medium increased the percentage of oocytes that reached meiosis II but did not affect cumulus expansion after 22 hours of IVM. Addition of KITL reduced levels of mRNA encoding natriuretic peptide precursor C (NPPC), a protein that holds oocytes in meiotic arrest, and increased levels of mRNA encoding YBX2, an oocyte-specific factor involved in meiosis. Removal of the oocyte from the COC resulted in ...

The present study evaluated biomass accumulation, leaf morphoanatomy and physiology of Neonotonia wightii andPueraria phaseoloides grown in full sunlight, as well as in 30% and 50% shade. Two assays were performed, one for each species, using a randomized block design with 10 replicates. A higher accumulation of fresh mass in the shoot of the plants was observed for both species under cultivation in 50% shade, while no differences were detected between the full sunlight and 30% shade. N. wightii and P. phaseoloides showed increase in area and reduction in thickness leaf when cultivated in 50% shade. There were no changes in photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency and evapotranspiration of P. phaseoloidesplants because growth environment. However, the shade treatments caused alterations in physiological parameters of N. wightii. In both species, structural changes in...

Other clinical conditions such as dialysis-dependent end-stage renal disease and non-functioning kidney are also indications for simultaneous removal of the bladder and kidney. In the present study, we report our laparoscopic experience with simultaneous laparoscopic radical cystectomy (LRC) and nephroureterectomy. Materials and Methods: Between August 2000 and June 2007, 8 patients underwent simultaneous laparoscopic radical nephroureterectomy (LNU) (unilateral-6, bilateral-2) and radical cystectomy at our institution. Demographic data, pathologic features, surgical technique and outcomes were retrospectively analyzed. Results: The laparoscopic approach was technically successful in all 8 cases (7 males and 1 female) without the need for open conversion. Median total operative time, including LNU, LRC, pelvic lymphadenectomy and urinary diversion, was 9 hours (range 8-12). Median estimated blood loss and hospital stay were 755 mL (range 300-2000) and 7.5 days (range 4-90), respectively. There were no intraoperative complications but only 1 major and 2 minor postoperative complications. (range 1-45). Conclusions: Laparoscopic nephroureterectomy with concomitant cystectomy is technically feasible. Greater number of

This paper presents an experimental study about two pile caps reinforced concrete with external, partially embedded and embedded socket submitted to central load, using 1:2 scaled models. In the analyzed models, the smooth interface between the socket walls and column was considered. The results are compared to a reference model that presents monolithic connections between the column and pile cap. It is observed that the ultimate load of pile cap with external sockets has the same magnitude as the reference pile cap, but the ultimate load of models with partially embedded and embedded socket present less magnitude than the reference model.

Nitrogen adsorption test for Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area and pore volume of the adsorbent produced were carried out. The Langmuir surface area, BET surface area and pore volume of the synthesized carbon are 533 m2/g, 361 m2/g and 0.19 cm3/g respectively. Micropores are predominant constituting 88% of the total surface area. From the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, hydroxyls, alkenes, carbonyls and aromatics functional groups were identified. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results gives thermal analysis whereby moisture pyrolysis occurred at 105oC, the pyrolysis of hemicellulose and cellulose occurred at 160–390oC. However, lignin decomposition occurred in a wider temperature range (390-650oC). The proximate and ultimate analysis shows high percentage of carbon and less ash content which indicates a good precur...

A polar map is a two-dimensional plot of the reconstructed volume from the SPECT study, which provides concise information on myocardial perfusion in a single easily interpretable image. Unlike the traditional approaches, our algorithm is automatic. It relies on image registration techniques to align the patient exam to a previously computed model, avoiding the need of manual intervention by a specialist. Preliminary analysis ...
