Centennial sMATHERS 100
Over the last 100 years, we have illuminated excellence by supporting students, providing exciting collections for faculty classroom use, aiding in the research life cycle, and more. 2025 marks the centennial of the initial library building, now known as the Smathers Library, which offered centralized collections and services at the University of Florida.
Starting with that building in the northeast corner of campus, we have grown to be the largest academic resource system in the state with six on-campus branches, affiliate branches across Florida, and high-density storage facilities. We look forward to seeing you at an in-person event or online in 2025 as we celebrate our past and envision our future.
MESSAGE FROM THE dEAN

As we celebrate the centennial of the original dedicated library on the University of Florida campus, now known as the Smathers Library, and the entire library system, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. Over the last 100 years, the Smathers Libraries have illuminated excellence, ignited curiosity, and promoted intellectual exchange for our community. This milestone is not just a testament to the rich history of our libraries, but a reflection of our unwavering support and dedication to all users who visit us in person and online.
Our centennial issue is a special tribute to the countless stories and transformations that have shaped our institution. It highlights the remarkable progress we have made in shaping the student experience, aiding in the research life cycle, preserving special collections, and fostering an inclusive environment for learning and discovery. Each article and feature in this issue is a celebration of our collective efforts and a glimpse into the future we are building together.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to the success of the Smathers Libraries. Your passion, creativity, and commitment have been the driving force behind our accomplishments. As we look ahead to the next century, I am confident that we will continue to inspire and empower generations to come.
Thank you for being a part of our journey. Here’s to another 100 years of excellence and curiosity!
Sincerely
Judith C. Russell
