Multilingualism is so deeply embedded in researchers' everyday work that they may not fully ackno... more Multilingualism is so deeply embedded in researchers' everyday work that they may not fully acknowledge how big a role translation plays in it. In this article, we examine PhD researchers' views on research translation through the concept of translation awareness. We demonstrate how PhD researchers as paraprofessional translators see the role of translation in their research projects and what specific translation challenges they encounter. We also examine how taking part in a course on translating research material influences their views. This article aims to continue and expand discussion on the concept of translation awareness.

This article discusses the positive and negative factors behind translation students' selfconfide... more This article discusses the positive and negative factors behind translation students' selfconfidence in the final stages of their MA studies. The key theoretical concept behind the discussion is self-efficacy, which refers to the belief of one's ability to reach given performance outcomes . In this case, self-efficacy refers to professional self-confidence in the context of translation. Other notions touched upon in the article include translation competence (PACTE 2003; and psychological skill . The data of the study consists of 13 reflective essays written by students of English Language and Translation at the University of Eastern Finland as one of their final assignments in the training programme. On the basis of the analysis, the translation students' self-efficacy seems to be fairly strong. One of the factors behind this could be the high level of self-awareness that is supported by the numerous self-reflective tasks that translator training contains.

This article discusses the role of translation in multilingual research context. The aim is to cr... more This article discusses the role of translation in multilingual research context. The aim is to create an overview of the different situations in which translation from one language to another takes place in a research process. The data analysed in the study has been collected in two courses organized for PhD students in the Doctoral Programme in Social and Cultural Encounters at the University of Eastern Finland. The courses concentrated on research translation, and the material collected for the present study contains the students' preliminary assignments, final reflections and feedback forms from the courses. The analysis shows that translation as such is a multifaceted phenomenon that takes various forms and penetrates the whole research process. Before taking the course, the participants of the study had mainly been unaware of the large role that translation plays in their research, but during the course they became familiar with some of the translational issues as well as learned possible solutions to some of the problems that translation poses in their research.

Itä-Suomen yliopisto Monimuotoinen kielimaisema ja kielellinen hyvinvointi This introduction arti... more Itä-Suomen yliopisto Monimuotoinen kielimaisema ja kielellinen hyvinvointi This introduction article discusses language vitality and language diversity in connection with linguistic well-being, which were the main ideas reflected behind the theme of the AFinLA Autumn Symposium 2018, "Keeping languages alive". Linguistic well-being is a new concept that addresses the issues related to language policy and linguistic practices within a speech community and how these impact the individual members of that community. Among the main factors behind linguistic well-being we find linguistic human rights, which emphasize, for example, the right for anyone to identify with one or more languages without being discriminated and the right for basic education in one's own language. These rights are particularly linked to how endangered and minority languages are treated in the society and they can be actively promoted by language policy and education. However, linguistic wellbeing is not just a matter of minorities but it affects the whole community. The more diverse the language environment and linguistic landscape of a speech community is, the healthier and more affluent the whole community is-both its minority and majority language speakers.

This paper sketches a continuum between lexicon and syntax, with concrete examples from two typol... more This paper sketches a continuum between lexicon and syntax, with concrete examples from two typologically different languages, Finnish and English. While Finnish is a morphologically rich and relatively transparent synthetic language, full of inflectional and derivational morphology and compounding, English is clearly more analytical making use of particles, prepositions, and other free grammatical morphemes. The contrastive idiom analyses of these two languages offer us a glimpse into the multiplicity involved in idiomaticity and into the cooperation of the lexical and syntactic principles of language that takes place in the production of fixed, conventional, multiword utterances and through their ubiquity also in some phenomena that are involved in grammaticalization. On the basis of the discussion presented in this paper, it can be concluded that rather than forming a single continuum, the rich spectrum of lexical and syntactic constructions of these two languages can be thought of as forming a continuum of continua, where idioms reside at a culmination point, since they can be regarded as both lexical units and syntactic constructions at the same time.

Multilingual communication in a researcher's work: Preliminary results of a questionnaire survey

This article presents the preliminary results of a questionnaire survey conducted at the Universi... more This article presents the preliminary results of a questionnaire survey conducted at the University of Eastern Finland in the first half of 2020. The aim of the survey was to investigate the multiple ways in which multilingual communication and various translatorial activities are included in a researcher&#39;s daily work in different disciplines. The phenomenon discussed in this text is called research translatoriality, where the term translatoriality emphasizes the fluid and versatile nature of translatorial practices that are present in research contexts, extend beyond translation proper, and are performed by various agents. The survey results emphasize the role of English as the dominant language of academic discourse, but the full variety of languages present in researchers&#39; work at UEF is much wider. Moreover, some kind of translation or interpreting seem to take place at all phases of the research process. Interestingly enough, most researchers do translating, interpreting or proofreading themselves, although many of them have no training for these tasks. Only a minority use the services of language professionals.

Reviewed by LUCY JONES Discourse and Identity is a monograph aimed at scholars and students inter... more Reviewed by LUCY JONES Discourse and Identity is a monograph aimed at scholars and students interested in identity and its relationship to language. An introduction to theories and approaches, this book offers a guide to the field via existing data and analyses and is designed to be a valuable resource and reference for scholars in this area. The book aims to introduce the study of identity as constructed in discourse across a variety of disciplines (including linguistics, psychology and cultural studies) and the authors offer case studies to support their overview of work in each area. Focusing primarily on methodology, the first half of the book considers interactional and ideological approaches to identity through the analysis of discourse extracts. Though confusing at times due to the huge variety of approaches covered, the authors impressively link together the array of interdisciplinary methods in order to set the foundation for the remainder of the book. The second half considers some literal and ideological contexts in which identity is constructed through discourse, at which point the foundation laid out by the opening chapters on methodology becomes clearer. In this sense, the second half of the book contextually applies the theory and method detailed in the first. To introduce the book, the authors use an illustrative stretch of discourse from British fashion show What Not to Wear (BBC Television), where the 'style gurus' from the programme explain how they can find their participant's 'true identity' by setting her up in the 'right' clothes. The brief analysis offered raises the issue of identity as stylistic practice (since it is apparent that the way in which we adorn ourselves is seen as an expression of our identity) yet it also demonstrates the assumptions of essentialism that underlie much of the work into identity to date. The concept of identity as constructed through style is a contemporary one, with scholars such as Irvine (2001) arguing that the meaning behind style is ideologically mediated and thus contextually specific. This approach demonstrates how style is used to construct fluid identities rather than it being a reflection of a 'true' or 'natural' self. This is in contrast to early variationist work in sociolinguistics which took the vernacular, or 'unconscious' speech as reflective of a fixed social identity. Approaches which consider discourse as the means by which identity is constituted rather than the place in which it is reflected have since come to fruition (cf. Eckert and Rickford 2001), and it is this constructionist stance which is articulated in the book's introduction.
