El presente texto nace de una pregunta muy precisa en su enunciado: ¿Cuáles son los principales f... more El presente texto nace de una pregunta muy precisa en su enunciado: ¿Cuáles son los principales factores y escenarios de vulnerabilidad para la población del Departamento de Sucre? Empero, responder dicha cuestión reviste cierta complejidad en virtud de las variables Departamento de Sucre, población y vulnerabilidad. En este orden de ideas, nuestro objetivo es identificar, describir y analizar diferentes contextos y dinámicas territoriales del espacio vital llamado Departamento de Sucre, para dar cuenta de sus principales factores y escenarios de vulnerabilidad. Esto sugiere abordar el estudio de sus características históricas, sociales, culturales, ambientales, económicas y políticas. El texto, por consiguiente, intenta un aporte contextual a los esfuerzos teóricos, metodológicos y empíricos que se adelantan, para entender los alcances prácticos del concepto vulnerabilidad en el Departamento de Sucre, tanto desde la Psicología, en particular, como desde las Ciencias Sociales, en general.

This paper shows the usefulness of Agent-based Modeling (AbM) for studying social phenomena. This... more This paper shows the usefulness of Agent-based Modeling (AbM) for studying social phenomena. This tool saves time and resources, allowing us to analyze many variables and then select the most significant ones for proceeding with the study. This process is illustrated through a model which analyzes the time needed to treat sick people according to whether the treatment might be given in situ or at a hospital, whether health personnel might share or not information regarding patients' location and, if the density of geographical distribution of sick people is high or low. The results reveal that exchanging information significantly shortens the time only for hospital treatments and that density does not have an impact. We conclude that AbM has great advantages for the design of social research and helps in the decision making process of practitioners.
We model the evolution of concepts, i.e. how members of a social group associate properties to co... more We model the evolution of concepts, i.e. how members of a social group associate properties to concepts. Our Agent Based Model (ABM) is based on Conceptual Agreement Theory (CAT), which states that individuals can only infer the conceptual state of others when communicating. Through communication agents develop a conceptual structure which is influenced by three variables: the size of the group, the number of possible properties that may describe each concept and the rate at which agents learn. In general, the results show that these three variables non-linearly interact and that the larger the group and number of available properties, and the slower the learning process, the richer the conceptual structure that emerges from agents' interactions.
Resumen: Este artículo presenta el Modelamiento basado en Agentes (MbA) como una herramienta útil... more Resumen: Este artículo presenta el Modelamiento basado en Agentes (MbA) como una herramienta útil para analizar sistemas sociales y el impacto de posibles intervenciones sobre estos. Para ilustrar la potencia del MbA se entrega un ejemplo didáctico de una posible dinámica de control de delincuencia y gestión de recursos para esto. Aplicando los resultados del MbA se ejemplifica el análisis de una posible gestión comunitaria de seguridad pública. Este modelo muestra cómo emergen cuatro dinámicas al manipular el monto de la recompensa entregada al contingente policial al capturar delincuentes. Al aumentar la recompensa, se encontraron umbrales abruptos que marcan la transición entre las siguientes dinámicas: a) extinción de policías; b) coexistencia de policías y ladrones; c) extinción de policías y ladrones; y d) extinción de ladrones. Se concluye que el MbA ayuda en la planificación de recursos para intervenciones comunitarias y/o en la investigación de las bases de dinámicas sociales no lineales. Agent-based Modeling: a computer simulation method for the management of public safety Abstract: This paper presents Agent-based Modeling (ABM) as a useful tool for analyzing social systems and the impact of possible interventions on such systems. To illustrate the power of ABM, the paper uses a didactic example of resource management applied to delinquency control. Using the ABM's results the paper shows the analysis of possible resource management for public security. This model shows how four types of dynamics appear as the value of the reward for catching thief increases, with abrupt thresholds between each of them: a) police extinction; b) coexistence of police and thief, c) police and thief extinction, and d) thief extinction. The paper concludes that ABM may help in the planning of resources in social interventions and/or research aimed at explaining the basis of non-linear social dynamics.
