I looked at my weekly message from Linked In about conversations in my group, and saw this:

Is there any radical fuel that has the potential to replace fossil fuels?
Started by Nicolas Meilhan

Emily, excellent. How were the pastries?

While some people might consider pastries fuel (and putting them in your gas tank is certainly radical), I doubt this is where the original poster was expecting the conversation to go.

[Current Music |Other Day I Met A Bear]

I'm listening to Pandora, and the current song is a children's song by ...

... Barenaked Ladies.

While I am not going to say you cannot do something because of what your name is, it does seem to be a rather inappropriate name to associate with children's music.

On the other hand, it is from the album For the Kids III, so apparently they have done this multiple times with success.

Thoughts on age and political leanings [Nov. 15th, 2012|08:42 pm]

It is commonly stated that older people are (in general) more conservative than younger people. Consequently, one option for advancing <insert liberal cause here> is to wait a few years, after which some older opponents will have died and been replaced by younger votes who will support the cause. However, I think that there is also a tendency for a person to become more conservative as they grow older, which would counteract that effect. This seems to be discussed much less (at least in the blogs I read).

Does anybody know about the relative size of these two effects? Does the influx of younger voters outweigh the shift of the remaining populace as it ages?

After adding the peppermint extract, do not lick the measuring spoon clean.

Unless, of course, you are looking for more excitement than chocolate chip peppermint cookies can provide.

There are several bills being considered by various states to restrict or make access to abortion more difficult. In many of them, there are also amendments being proposed to also restrict men's access, often to Viagra.

More of why I like my church [Mar. 5th, 2012|04:13 pm]

(Actually from a few months ago, but it seemed to get stuck as a draft.)

Last Sunday's service included a puppet show, with a character who occasionally shows up during the service. It was part of "have the children in the regular service Sunday", but was not overly kid-focused.

After church, the assistant pastor asked me how I liked the puppet show, and then commented that it probably was not as good as Avenue Q.

Not only has the pastor heard about Avenue Q, when he brings it up, it is a joking reference, not an attack against the show. This is so not the church I grew up in.

Of course, it did mean that I went to Coffee Hour with "The Internet is for Porn" running through my head.

Our oven is currently refusing to light and produce heat, so Jen experimented with baking bread in the toaster oven. Sadly, most of the bread came out burnt. In one case, that was literally true. When she took the bread out of the oven, there were flames on top of it!

A while later, we had a nice show as flash fires leaped across the top of the oven.

About an hour ago, J was looking through one of her cookbooks and found a recipe for maple pumpkin cookies. I said, "That sounds delicious, can I have one?" Her response: "Yes". We now have cookies. They are as delicious as they sounded. I love her.

Much of this makes sense to me, and I'm not even a professional mathematician. I'd disagree about the comments on math being better than sex, but it can be close.
