Τhis article is part of a research project on a pivotal era in the history of artificial language... more Τhis article is part of a research project on a pivotal era in the history of artificial languages, spanning from the 19th century to the first quarter of the 20th century. During this period, European intellectuals formed the belief that teaching worldwide a constructed code as a second language could yield substantial benefits for humanity, including, most prominently, the improvement of global communication. The article briefly outlines the first attempts made to devise and select such a language and discusses some of the most famous language systems that were constructed such as Esperanto, which, despite falling short of its intended role, has survived to the present day and even managed to acquire native speakers after overcoming all obstacles in its way. Remarkably enough, Esperanto's route can offer an alternative perspective on today's universal language question.

Από την πρώτη κιόλας μέρα εμφάνισης της ασθένειας που προκλήθηκε από τον κορονοϊό και που εξελίχθ... more Από την πρώτη κιόλας μέρα εμφάνισης της ασθένειας που προκλήθηκε από τον κορονοϊό και που εξελίχθηκε στην πανδημία, της οποίας αυτή τη στιγμή ζούμε τις συνέπειες, προέκυψε η ανάγκη δημιουργίας νέων όρων που θα περιέγραφαν τη νέα επιστημονική και κοινωνική πραγματικότητα, όπως και η ανάγκη ερμηνείας παλιότερων όρων που είτε χρησιμοποιήθηκαν με επικαιροποιημένη σημασία, είτε απλώς δεν ήταν γνωστοί ή σαφείς για το ευρύ κοινό. Σε όλο τον κόσμο δημιουργήθηκαν λεξικά και γλωσσάρια, τόσο μονόγλωσσα όσο και πολύγλωσσα, τόσο από ιδιώτες όσο και από επίσημους φορείς. Το άρθρο αυτό αναφέρεται στη μελέτη των αντιδράσεων της ελληνόφωνης ορολογίας στην πανδημία COVID-19, μέσα από τις πρωτοβουλίες που υλοποιήθηκαν στην Ελλάδα και στην Κύπρο. Συγκεκριμένα, παρουσιάζουμε τα ορολογικά έργα που δημιουργήθηκαν στη διάρκεια του 2020, τις μεθόδους συλλογής και καταγραφής των δεδομένων και το ίδιο το είδος των δεδομένων που καταγράφτηκαν. Για κάθε έργο, εκτός από τους συντελεστές δημιουργίας, εξετάζουμε τις προδιαγραφές που ακολουθήθηκαν για την οργάνωση και την παρουσίαση του περιεχομένου, τις πηγές που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν και τις υπόλοιπες επιλογές των δημιουργών. Θεωρούμε ότι μια τέτοια έρευνα έχει, εκτός από πρακτική, και θεωρητική χρησιμότητα, με την έννοια ότι μπορεί να δώσει στοιχεία για το πώς εφαρμόζονται οι μεθοδολογικές αρχές της ορολογικής εργασίας, ώστε να επιτευχθεί το βέλτιστο αποτέλεσμα στον συντομότερο δυνατό χρόνο, ιδιαίτερα στο πλαίσιο μιας ασυνήθιστης επικοινωνιακής κατάστασης.

Περίληψη: Παρουσιάζεται εδώ η εμπειρία της δημιουργίας ενός ορολογικού λεξικού με αντικείμενο το ... more Περίληψη: Παρουσιάζεται εδώ η εμπειρία της δημιουργίας ενός ορολογικού λεξικού με αντικείμενο το λεξιλόγιο της πανδημίας COVID-19 που έπληξε τη γη το 2020. Δίνεται βάρος στην ανάγκη δημιουργίας ενός τέτοιου τεκμηρίου, στη μέθοδο συλλογής και επεξεργασίας των δεδομένων και στο ίδιο το είδος των δεδομένων που καταγράφηκαν. Στόχος είναι να δείξουμε πώς εφαρμόζονται οι μεθοδολογικές αρχές της ορολογίας, ώστε να επιτευχθεί το βέλτιστο αποτέλεσμα στο συντομότερο δυνατό χρόνο, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τις ιδιαίτερες επικοινωνιακές καταστάσεις που δημιουργήθηκαν. This paper aims to provide a brief description of the main typological aspects of the dictionarie... more This paper aims to provide a brief description of the main typological aspects of the dictionaries of Cypriot Greek from 1868, when the first dictionary of Cypriot Greek was published, until today. Our investigation includes 45 dictionaries, the publication and macro-structure characteristics of which we present. Being an expansion of Katsoyannou (2010) original research on dialectal lexicography of Cypriot Greek, our current research includes both conventionally and digitally published dictionaries. In presenting the history and typology of Cypriot Greek dictionaries, we also comment on the publishing practices and ideologies that shaped dialectal lexicography in Cyprus.

Το Τυροκομικόν είναι ένα ορολογικό λεξικό που εξειδικεύεται στην τυροκομία και περιλαμβάνει λήμμα... more Το Τυροκομικόν είναι ένα ορολογικό λεξικό που εξειδικεύεται στην τυροκομία και περιλαμβάνει λήμματα σχετικά με τον κλάδο της γαλακτοκομίας στην Κύπρο: προϊόντα, σκεύη, διαδικασίες παραγωγής... Πρόκειται για λεξικό τεχνικής και επιστημονικής ορολογίας που περιέχει όρους-λήμματα της κυπριακής διαλέκτου, είτε αυτοί είναι κοινοί με τους όρους της κοινής νέας ελληνικής είτε όχι. Η δημιουργία του Τυροκομικόν ξεκίνησε στο πλαίσιο του μαθήματος ΓΕΠ 236: Λεξικογραφία του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου. Στην επιλογή του θέματος βοήθησαν οι συζητήσεις και ανταλλαγές εμπειρίας με τους υπεύθυνους του εικονικού μουσείου κυπριακών τροφίμων και διατροφής Cyprus food museum που έχει στόχο την προβολή της κυπριακής γαστρονομίας. Η έρευνα για το λεξικό βρίσκεται πλέον στο τελικό στάδιο: το λεξιλόγιο έχει συγκεντρωθεί και έχει ταξινομηθεί θεματολογικά, ενώ περισσότερα δελτία έχουν συμπληρωθεί και αναμένουν την τελική τους επιμέλεια. Για κάθε κατηγορία λημμάτων κατασκευάζονται διαγράμματα και/ πίνακες με στόχο την εποπτική παρουσίασή τους. Ο έλεγχος και η αξιολόγηση του περιεχομένου θα γίνει από ειδικούς του αντικειμένου, έτσι ώστε το λεξικό να θεωρηθεί έτοιμο για να αναρτηθεί ηλεκτρονικά και ενδεχομένως να εκδοθεί σε έντυπη μορφή.

More specifically, we make a contrastive examination of the public administration terminology that is used in Greece and in Cyprus. Our focus lies on the fact that although Modern Greek (MG) is the official language in both countries, there are several differentiations and variations in the public administration terminology that they use. The research goal of the project focuses on the study of Cypriot Greek vocabulary and its written representation. Three main principles guide the structure of the website: accessibility, efficiency, and user friendliness.
The phenomenon of false friends is quite common in many languages, but it has not been sufficient... more The phenomenon of false friends is quite common in many languages, but it has not been sufficiently analyzed between varieties of the same language. In this paper, we present some aspects of this phenomenon as it comes out between Modern Greek (MG) and Cypriot Greek (CG). The survey results regarding the use of false friends between MG and CG in the written speech of 15 years old high school students, indicate that GC native speakers use false friends according to what they consider to be a MG meaning, when in fact they express a CG meaning. Concluding, it is maintained that false friends should be taught in order to improve knowledge of both varieties.

ΜΜΜ (Mediterranean Morphology Meeting) 2017, Nicosia, Cyprus.
This study was part of an on-going research program undertaken in Cyprus for the creation of lexicographic resources of the dialect. Subjects of different sex, age, and educational backgrounds were exposed to audio stimuli of words containing the CiV sequence and were asked to write down on paper what they heard. The main findings indicated that there was a preference for writing phonologically rather than phonetically in cases whereby /i̯/ was preceded by plosive consonants, such as /p/ or /t/. This way of writing concurs with Standard Greek orthography. However, a systematic phonetic representation dominates in cases whereby /i̯/ is preceded by fricative consonants, such as /θ/ or /f/, or the tap /ɾ/. In the light of these findings, we discuss the factors that may affect the preferences of Greek Cypriots in writing CG, such as the influence of the writing system of Standard Modern Greek, and phonotactic constraints of CG.
