The purpose of this article is to analyze religious freedom as a principle and as a fundamental h... more The purpose of this article is to analyze religious freedom as a principle and as a fundamental human right, its scope and limits, within the framework of the relations between the State and the Churches and the concept of secularism, to finally qualify the Uruguayan State according to the parameters considered. In this sense, the models of a) neutrality of the State are considered, in the sense of impartiality, b) respect for the internal autonomy of religious confessions; and c) the presence of legal norms that establish limits to the exercise of the right to religious freedom in their collective manifestations. In short, public authorities are incompetent to manage, value, decide or interfere in anything that affects religions and their natural development in the social sphere. Said power cannot ignore the right to religious freedom, since that right places the responsibility of the State, among others, the correlative duty to protect it.
