This paper seeks to explore the historical themes held in the private lives of queer men in Cape Town, and the historical conditions that have informed how these households and domesticities form. Issues of personal and spatial histories in households are discussed. Alongside this, the history of Cape Town is explored: from Dutch and British colonial law, to the implications of apartheid and the culture of persecution during the 20th century, to the landmark changes in the statute books during our democratization. This analysis and the oral history testimonies of eight queer men will discuss the changes in domesticity in the male queer community of Cape Town. Specific issues in these testimonies explored their family backgrounds, their development during high school and their understanding of how domesticity has changed in the last twenty years.
