Yet she left us an invaluable body of work on this topic. This essay surveys Card's views about the nature of evils and the ethical quandaries of surviving them. It then develops an account of survival agency that is based on Card's insights and in keeping with the agentic capacities exercised by Yezidi women and girls who have escaped from ISIS's obscene program of trafficking in women and sexual violence. Card holds that true survival requires not only staying alive and as healthy as possible but also preserving your good moral character. The essay maintains that while exercising agency to elude evil and protect yourself often depends on your own skills and personality traits, exercising agency to restore or develop your moral character often depends on social support.

This paper clarifies and reflects on the four values that Serene Khader argues feminism can do wi... more This paper clarifies and reflects on the four values that Serene Khader argues feminism can do without in Decolonizing Universalism: independence individualism , personhood individualism, Enlightenment freedom, and gender-role eliminativism. Persuaded by her condemnation of the view Khader calls &quot;head-ship complementarianism&quot; and her defense of a different form of gender comple-mentarianism, the paper leaves the question of gender role eliminativism aside. It starts by presenting some concerns about her treatment of Enlightenment freedom , independence individualism, and personhood individualism. It agrees that Enlightenment freedom and independence individualism have no place in femi-nism. Contrary to Khader, however, it maintains that personhood individualism is necessarily a feminist value. It then shows why the value of women&#39;s autonomy is more central to non-imperialist feminism than Khader acknowledges. Ultimately, it agrees with Khader that feminism can be both universalist and non-imperialist provided that these qualifications are adopted.

He is especially adept at defining terms and constructing models that reach the conclusions prefigured by his conservative ideological position, a talent amply evident in this collection of papers about the 1980s. His work is motivated and channeled by his intense dislike of the twentieth-century liberal, welfare, interest group state and by his desire to restrict both the economic role of government and its intellectual rationale, particularly in what he perceives to be redistribution. His self-expressed desire is to create an intellectual fortress supportive of what he calls the minimalist, protective, or night watchman state. For Buchanan, traditional economics is too readily interventionist. He prefers a political economy led by his "public choice" theory in providing (in the phrase of his mentor, Frank Knight) a propaganda for economic freedom.

A detailed computational study was performed for the case of a wall-bounded pin-fin-array in a st... more A detailed computational study was performed for the case of a wall-bounded pin-fin-array in a staggered arrangement, representative of industrial configurations designed to enhance heat transfer. In order to evaluate the level of turbulence modelling necessary to accurately reproduce the flow physics at three (3) different Reynolds numbers (3,000, 10,000 and 30,000), four models were selected: two eddy-viscosity URANS models (k-ω-SST and φmodel), an Elliptic Blending Reynolds-stress model (EB-RSM) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Global comparisons for the pressure loss coefficients and average Nusselt numbers were performed with available experimental data which are relevant for industrial applications. Further detailed comparisons of the velocity fields, turbulence quantities and local Nusselt numbers revealed that the correct prediction of the characteristics of the flow is closely related to the ability of the turbulence model to reproduce the large-scale unsteadiness in the wake of the pins, which is at the origin of the intense mixing of momentum and heat. Eddy-viscosity-based turbulence models have difficulties to develop such an unsteadiness, in particular around the first few rows of pins, which leads to a severe underestimation of the Nusselt number. In contrast, LES and EB-RSM are able to predict the unsteady motion of the flow and heat transfer in a satisfactory manner.

A number of late 20th-early 2lst century political and intellectual movements put a spotlight on ... more A number of late 20th-early 2lst century political and intellectual movements put a spotlight on the value of listening to silenced voices. Picking up on these trends, philosophers have addressed a number of pertinent themes, including respect, empathy, and credibility. Less thoroughly explored is the relation between victims' stories and normativity. This paper examines two theories of narrativeone by Hayden White and the other by Anthony Amsterdam and Jerome Brunerand argues that neither adequately accounts for the capacity of victims' stories of abuse to advance understanding ofand increase respect for human rights. To better appreciate the contribution of victims' stories to human rights advocacy, I propose an account of the relation between normativity and a type of fractured story that traumatized victims often tell. Systematic injustice A number of late 20thearly 21st century political and intellectual movements put a spotlight on the value of listening to silenced voices. In consciousness raising sessions, second wave feminists exchanged stories of their everyday lives and used these stories to construct theories of gender and to formulate political agendas.l Soon women of color and lesbians in western as well as developing nations objected that middleclass white feminists had silenced them and consequently misrepresented womanhood and the needs of women as a group.2 In law schools, critical race theorists made the case that white supremacy could not be eradicated unless personal stories of racial oppression were injected into U.S. legal proceedings.3 Recent truth commissions in South Africa and Peru and war crimes tribunals in the Hague and Rwanda have reaffirmed the right to a voice of one's own.

Victim's Stories and the Advancement of Human Rights takes on a set of questions suggested by the... more Victim's Stories and the Advancement of Human Rights takes on a set of questions suggested by the worldwide persistence of human rights abuse and the prevalence of victims' stories in human rights campaigns, truth commissions, and international criminal tribunals: What conceptions of victims are presumed in contemporary human rights discourse? How do conventional narrative templates fail victims of human rights abuse and resist raising novel human rights issues? What is empathy, and how can victims frame their stories to overcome empathetic obstacles and promote commitment to human rights? How can victims' stories be used ethically in the service of human rights?

The book addresses these concerns by analyzing the rhetorical resources for and constraints on victims' ability to articulate their stories and by clarifying how their stories can contribute to enlarged understandings of human rights protections and deepened commitments to realizing human rights. It theorizes the normative content that victims' stories can convey and the bearing of that normative content on human rights. Throughout the book, published victims' stories-including stories of torture, slavery, genocide, rape in wartime, and child soldiering-are analyzed in conjunction with philosophical arguments. This book mobilizes philosophical theory to illuminate victims' stories and appeals to victims' stories to enrich the philosophy of human rights.
