they plunder or investigate. To legitimate
their activities a simple discourse, based on
treasure and adventure, has diminished the
sense of historical value for patrimony of
Spanish origin. This discrimination stems
from the black legend. Archaeologists, in
their increasingly necessary efforts to disseminate
their work, and journalists, doing their
job to inform the public, must cooperate to
change the image of this narrative to give it
greater strength, because it is based on scientific
methods and facts. Therefore, we must
avoid using terms that treasure hunters have
made suspect. Let’s begin with treasure. We
redefine its meaning and demonstrate that
the scientific approach is the same for all objects
whether they were transported on galleons
and other sailing vessels.

Los cazatesoros han llevado la delantera
al crear una narrativa asociada a los
yacimientos que expolian o investigan. Un
discurso simple, basado en tesoros y aventuras,
que legitima sus actividades y ha ejercido
sobre el patrimonio de origen
hispánico una enajenación de su valor histórico.
Tal discriminación mana de la leyenda
negra. Los arqueólogos, en sus cada vez
más necesarias tareas de divulgación, y los
periodistas en su labor informativa, deben
cooperar para plantar cara a esa narrativa
con otra de mayor fuerza, pues está basada
en hechos científicos. Para ello debemos
dejar de evitar algunas palabras que los cazatesoros
han convertido en sospechosas.
Empecemos por tesoro. Redefinamos su
sentido y demostremos que la aproximación
científica es igual para todos los objetos que
viajaban en los viejos galeones y navíos.
