This may increase the production of growth factors or the number of receptors on the cell surface, and/or increase transcription factors or intracellular signal messengers. Together with the loss of tumour suppressor activity, these changes lead to a cell phenotype that can increase cell proliferation, with loss of cell cohesion, and infiltration of adjacent tissue thus causing distant metastasis. Molecular pathology is responsible for defining the molecular mechanisms that underlie the onset of oral precancer and cancer. The aim of this review is to describe recent advances in our understanding of the molecular control of the innumerable pathways related to these processes. These may lead to short- or medium term improvements in the diagnosis and prognosis of oral precancerous and cancerous lesions and to the development of novel th...

Several associations with age, sex, dosage, duration of therapy or interval since transplantation have been hypothesized. The introduction of alternative immunosuppressant drugs have been suggested to permit better long-term transplant outcomes and a decrease in incidence of gingival overgrowth. The aim of the present paper is to summarize current knowledge regarding aetiology, pathogenesis and management of gingival overgrowth induced by Cyclosporine A.

Three sets of average severity and prevalence scores were prepared: based on the full mouth examination, on observations made from the index teeth of the P.D.I., and on the six teeth utilized for the C.P.I.T.N. in this age group. Partial indices tended to underestimate the real prevalence of the different signs, and slightly overestimate severity, being these observations statistically significant. Average severity scores were obtained more accurately with the six Ramfjord teeth, while real prevalence rates were better determined with the C.P.I.T.N. teeth. From an epidemiological point of v...

In this study, we describe the cutting-grinding procedure (EXAKT system) for obtaining samples of undecalcified bone and aim to establish the procedures for their histological and histomorphometric evaluation. A review is made of the literature on histological and histomorphometric evaluation using undecalcified samples in surgical and oral implantology procedures in which bone regeneration or bone apposition is produced on the dental implants. The technique is a lengthy process, and is principally indicated in the investigation of bone biology. The use of undecalcified samples allows the differentiation of immature from mature bone, and the quantification of variables such as the bone-implant interface, the density of the bone area and the speed of bone apposition.

A clinical trial was conducted in 400 women who underwent tooth extraction, stratified into 4 risk groups according to their use of tobacco (yes/no) and oral contraceptives (yes/no). Each stratum (n = 100) was randomly divided into 2 groups: a study group that received azithromycin 500 mg once daily for 3 days after extraction and a control group that received physiologic saline 3 times daily from 24 hours after extraction for 7 days. Azithromycin was significantly superior to conventional postextraction treatment with physiologic saline. There were no significant interactions with the use of either tobacco or oral contraceptives, and these variables had no confounding effects. Azithromycin is a safe and efficacious treatment for the prevention of dry socket in women.
