Full professor of the Department of Information Technologies and Systems at University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), in Ciudad Real (Spain). His current research interests include enterprise architecture, business-process technology, and social data analytic. Past topics also was software engineering and information systems. From more than 30 years he has also worked to several companies as analyst-programmer, project manager, IT consultant, and CIO. He has written 9 books and he has published more than 100 articles in refereed international journals, and relevant congresses and conferences. He is a member of ACM, IEEE-CS and AEA, among other academic and professional associations.

Tool support for Service Oriented development from Business Processes

The integration of Business Process Management (BPM), Service Oriented Computing (SOC) and Model ... more The integration of Business Process Management (BPM), Service Oriented Computing (SOC) and Model Driven Development (MDD) paradigms to improve the development of services oriented solutions from business models is nowadays in the spotlight. Organizations wanting to remain competitive despite the constant changes in their business are paying more attention to their business processes and its base lifecycle. Business process modeling is also at the centre of software development efforts, as making those models explicitly constitutes the basis for services definition. Transformations between business process and services models allow the automatic generation of services from business processes in a repeatable and systematic way, easing the development process. In this paper we present MINERVA's tool support for service oriented development from business processes, including QVT transformations from BPMN to SoaML models to automatically generate service models from business process models.

En toda organización es conveniente que la información y el conocimiento se procesen y almacenen ... more En toda organización es conveniente que la información y el conocimiento se procesen y almacenen de forma que estos se puedan reutilizar. En el caso del mantenimiento del software es todavía más importante realizar una buena gestión de la información y del conocimiento ya que estos provienen de distintas fuentes y etapas del ciclo de vida. Sin embargo, en la actualidad existen muy pocos trabajos enfocados en la aplicación de técnicas de gestión del conocimiento en el mantenimiento del software. En este artículo se describe cómo hemos definido los conceptos involucrados en el mantenimiento del software y cómo se han representado en una ontología, la cual posteriormente ha sido implementada en un sistema de gestión del conocimiento usando REFSENO. Todo ello con el fin de potenciar la reutilización de la información (usando técnicas de razonamiento basado en casos), de forma que los ingenieros de mantenimiento puedan aprovechar la experiencia y lecciones aprendidas de otros trabajadores.

De hecho, la práctica totalidad de las métricas han sido desarrollada con el fin de controlar la mantenibilidad o complejidad de los programas, descuidando las bases de datos. En este trabajo se proponen diversas medidas para evaluar la calidad de los esquemas conceptuales, aplicándolas a un ejemplo.

Although software measurement plays an increasingly important role in Software Engineering, there... more Although software measurement plays an increasingly important role in Software Engineering, there is no consensus yet on many of the concepts and terminology used in this field. Even worse, vocabulary conflicts and inconsistencies can be frequently found amongst the many sources and references commonly used by software measurement researchers and practitioners. This article presents an analysis of the current situation, and provides a comparison framework that can be used to identify and address the discrepancies, gaps, and terminology conflicts that current software measurement proposals present. A basic software measurement ontology is introduced, that aims at contributing to the harmonization of the different software measurement proposals and standards, by providing a coherent set of common concepts used in software measurement. The ontology is also aligned with the metrology vocabulary used in other more mature measurement engineering disciplines.

Quality indicators for business process models from a gateway complexity perspective

Context: Quality assurance of business process models has been recognized as an important factor ... more Context: Quality assurance of business process models has been recognized as an important factor for modeling success at an enterprise level. Since quality of models might be subject to different interpretations, it should be addressed in the most objective way, by the application of measures. That said, however, assessment of measurement results is not a straightforward task: it requires the identification of relevant threshold values, which are able to distinguish different levels of process model quality. Objective: Since there is no consensual technique for obtaining these values, this paper proposes the definition of thresholds for gateway complexity measures based on the application of statistical techniques on empirical data. Method: To this end, we conducted a controlled experiment that evaluates quality characteristics of understandability and modifiability of process models in two different runs. The thresholds obtained were validated in a replication of the experiment. Results: The thresholds for gateway complexity measures are instrumental as guidelines for novice modelers. A tool for supporting business process model measurement and improvement is described, based on the automatic application of measurement, and assessment as well as derivation of advice about how to improve the quality of the model. Conclusion: It is concluded that thresholds classified business process models in the specific level of understandability and modifiability, so these thresholds were good and useful for decision-making.

In the context of digital transformation, companies are increasingly forced to develop, manage an... more In the context of digital transformation, companies are increasingly forced to develop, manage and continually align IT and business. Companies have found in Enterprise Architecture (EA) a valuable tool to represent and manage IT and business in a holistic way by establishing connections among technology concerns and business/strategical/motivational ones. EA modelling is one of the most critical tasks in this context to represent accurate models that make the difference in the decision-making and governance processes of the company. In most of the cases, EA models are manually defined by experts which is usually error-prone and time-consuming. Thus, the constant business and IT realignment through manual modelling becomes complex and expensive. This research presents ArchiRev, an extensible reverse engineering method that automate the extraction of EA models (using ArchiMate language) by analysing different information systems artefacts. This proposal has been validated through an industrial case study in the context of a C#-based system of an Italian ship refurbishment company. The study has demonstrated the effectiveness (based in the opinion of some business experts) and efficiency of the method. The main implication is that EA modelling can be accelerated, whereas subjectivity and errors introduced by experts might be reduced.

One important challenge is EA modelling since it is time-consuming (thus expensive), errorprone, and biased owing to experts' subjective opinions. This challenge might consequently be addressed through automatic EA modelling. We conducted a systematic mapping study to classify and evaluate the research concerning EA mining proposals developed specifically for TOGAF and Archimate. After analysing results, we concluded that the research field is not sufficiently mature and further research on EA mining is necessary.

The different types of changes are organized in a hierarchy, as well as represented in a homogeneous manner, independently of the number of municipalities involved and of the changes suffered. Each alteration is described in a precise and unambiguous way, and it is codified to permit an automatic treatment of the information. In addition to an efficient treatment of the information about municipal changes, a normalized representation facilitates the automatic detection of inconsistencies in public databases. At the same time, the taxonomy allow us to define backward and forward equivalence rules, that helps in the task of generating homogeneous time series about municipal characteristics, like population or surface. Adequate process modeling is one of the key factors for the success of software organizations. Cu... more Adequate process modeling is one of the key factors for the success of software organizations. Currently, organizations face with a very high competition and consequently they have to continuously improve their processes. This improvement could require changes of the process models so it is important to evaluate the maintainability of these models to facilitate their evolution. In this paper we present the results obtained with the replication of an experiment to validate a set of metrics for Software Process Models (SPMs). The replicas were performed at the Italian Universities of Sannio (Italy) and Federico II (Naples). They are part of a family of experiments and have confirmed the results obtained in the original experiment carried out at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). As a result a set of useful indicators of the understandability and modifiability of the SPMs, which are two key subcharacteristics of their maintainability, have been obtained.

Software maintenance is an important, indeed vital, activity for software companies. For many org... more Software maintenance is an important, indeed vital, activity for software companies. For many organizations, including small firms, it is also a business opportunity. In the quest to help companies of this type, for whom strengthening their maintenance process is a chief concern, we present Agile_MANTEMA. This is a methodological proposal for software maintenance, one which focuses on small companies. The methodology defines an agile maintenance strategy, setting out in detail what is to be carried out, when, how and by whom; that is to say, it seeks to give a detailed guide for the implementation of the maintenance process in these kinds of companies. Agile_MANTEMA also establishes a set of elements, such as types of maintenance, service levels and capability levels, which aim to: (i) handle the complexity that is inherent to the maintenance process and (ii) allow a small company to define its own maintenance process, taking into account its particular characteristics and needs. In an effort to improve their maintenance process, two small firms conducted an improvement project in which Agile_MANTEMA was used. The experiences reported by these companies tell us that this methodology offers a strategy that can be useful, practical and suitable for small companies as they tackle software maintenance. It is especially welcome for those of us struggling to provide our students with a text for learning the basics of software maintenance, in preparation for their inevitable first maintenance assignments as junior software engineers. This new book, Advances in Software Maintenance Management: Technologies and Solutions, edited by Macario Polo, Mario Piattini, and Francisco Ruiz at the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain, is not intended to be an academic textbook and so is lacking in some areas for that purpose. However, it has some important advantages over the few other choices in this area. It also is a useful volume for managers and others interested in getting an up-to-date understanding of some of the major issues in software maintenance.

This fact, coupled with the usual lack of planning and high costs of software maintenance, may invite many organizations to outsource this important process of the software life cycle. Such outsourcing should be relied to a "technological associate" who can carry out this process using an adequate methodological foundation. In this paper we present the outsourcing strategy that we have integrated in MANTEMA, a methodology for software maintenance developed by our university and Atos ODS, a multinational organization which provides software maintenance services to third-party organizations.

It is especially welcome for those of us struggling to provide our students with a text for learning the basics of software maintenance, in preparation for their inevitable first maintenance assignments as junior software engineers. This new book, Advances in Software Maintenance Management: Technologies and Solutions, edited by Macario Polo, Mario Piattini, and Francisco Ruiz at the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain, is not intended to be an academic textbook and so is lacking in some areas for that purpose. However, it has some important advantages over the few other choices in this area. It also is a useful volume for managers and others interested in getting an up-to-date understanding of some of the major issues in software maintenance.

Outsourcing of software life cycle activities is a growing business area in many sectors influenc... more Outsourcing of software life cycle activities is a growing business area in many sectors influenced by Information Technologies. This fact, coupled with the usual lack of planning and high costs of software maintenance, may invite many organizations to outsource this important process of the software life cycle. Such outsourcing should be relied to a "technological associate" who can carry out this process using an adequate methodological foundation. In this paper we present the outsourcing strategy that we have integrated in MANTEMA, a methodology for software maintenance developed by our university and Atos ODS, a multinational organization which provides software maintenance services to third-party organizations.
