Dr. Hector is President of the Center for Research in Traditional Culture of the Americas, a 501 C 3 California Public Benefit Corporation focused on independent research and publishing in the field of anthropology. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles and is a Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA). In addition to many technical reports, she successfully completed 6 National Register nominations for traditional cultural and archaeological resources. Dr. Hector was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society for California Archaeology, and has received 3 Governor's Awards for historic preservation. In 2022, she received the Excellence in Historic Preservation award and medal from the California State Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

The focus of this paper is on methods of repairing and securing pottery vessels to close off open... more The focus of this paper is on methods of repairing and securing pottery vessels to close off openings that were either intentional aspects of the vessel (the open top) or impacts to the structural integrity of the vessel (cracking and spalling). Cracks, holes, and spalling were repaired to preserve an object that took great skill and human time investment to produce. In some identified cases, covers were placed over the tops of vessels to prevent dirt from entering them, or to seal the contents for preservation.

The Pomo baked the tops of these mushrooms; only the tops were eaten (Mead 2003: 13). Boletus sp. The Pomo ate a yellow and green variety raw. The Pomo cooked B. edulis on hot stones after it appeared following the first rains (Mead 2003: 74). Coprinus comatus. Shaggy ink cap mushrooms were eaten by the Cahuilla and Miwok (method of preparation not specified); Strike 1994: 44. Lycoperdon spp. Gemmed or gem-studded puffball (L. perlatum) and Sierra puffball (L. sculptum) were eaten by the Miwok. The Sierra puffballs were dried in the sun; they were then pulverized and boiled before eating (Strike 1994: 87). Polyporus spp. The Luiseno collected tender sulphur polypore (P. sulphereus) mushrooms that were found growing on cottonwood and willow trees; the native word for these tree mushrooms is "Shakapish" and they were highly esteemed (Sparkman 1908: 234). The mushrooms were boiled and eaten, and were a favorite food. I was in the field with Charlie Dever and a few other Luiseno (2005Luiseno ( or 2006 when we came upon some tree mushrooms on Canfield Road in the Palomar Mountains. They cut the mushrooms off the trees to take home with them. These mushrooms were also highly valued as food by the Pomo . The Tubatulabal gathered polypores and cut them into strips; these were dried, pounded, and stored for later cooking as a flavoring added to other foods (Strike 1994: 116).

This book is about intangible and perishable cultural heritage, and how traditional crafts convey... more This book is about intangible and perishable cultural heritage, and how traditional crafts convey feeling and knowledge from the past. It is also about how research and hands-on practice can ensure the survival of our traditions. The book focuses on cotton and wool textiles made in San Diego during the period between the establishment of the Spanish mission and railroad expansion. During this time, California was governed by Spain, Mexico, and the United States. The ongoing production and use of these fabrics represented the diversity of cultures in Southern California at the time, and the persistence of traditional methods of production. Currently the book is available in a print version only by request.
