Since March 2023, I am a postdoctoral research fellow within the Centre for Global Youth at the Institute of Education, University College London (UCL). I coordinate the qualitative strands of work for a three-year (Jan 2023 - Dec 2025) ESRC project titled 'Coastal youth life chances', a study investigating the impact of growing up in coastal towns on young people’s life chances across the lifecourse.

International mindedness as a platform for class solidarity

There has been reference in literature to the concepts of a Transnational Capitalist Class and a ... more There has been reference in literature to the concepts of a Transnational Capitalist Class and a Global Middle Class, but there has been little discussion of how education may form any sense of class solidarity for these groups. In national contexts, ruling class socialisation has been achieved through elite private schooling. But the notion of global classes presents a fundamentally different problem for class socialisation and solidarity since the educational mechanisms for creating solidarity are unclear. This question has achieved prominence through the political discourse identifying and attacking an international, liberal elite who are ‘Citizens of Anywhere’ and ‘Nowhere’. We focus on the role of the elite, traditional ‘International School’, delivering the International Baccalaureate programmes specifically designed to promote ‘international mindedness’ (IM), in the educational trajectories of this echelon of society. We argue that IM offers a class constructed platform in providing an element of global social solidarity.

Mapping the relational construction of people and places

A new method is proposed here aimed at eliciting the mechanisms which maintain the relational pos... more A new method is proposed here aimed at eliciting the mechanisms which maintain the relational positioning of people and places within social space. This ‘mapping tool’ is inherently relational by design and involves participants creating visual representations of their geographic imaginaries, encompassing their perceptions and preferences of different localities. This is followed by an interviewing approach wherein participants ‘speak to’ their map, producing ‘thick’ narratives detailing the ties that bind people and places. The method was developed and used as part of a 3-year study into the geographic imaginaries of young people in the UK, involving the collection of 1,000 maps, together with over 200 interviews, across 20 diverse localities. We draw on empirical examples of using the method from this study, including processes of differentiation within the middle classes and the place-based identities of towns, cities and localities.
