All of them originated in Modern English. Four out of seven compounds, came from ablatives and derived into nouns. Only in one instance, downgrade, derived from a noun into verb, making thus, a clear instance of grammaticalization. There is a strong tendency towards the fusion of the element adjacent to the right towards the adv. form. Objectives 1.1 General objective 1.1.1 To track the change process of the lexical item 'down' and seven of its lexical compounded forms found in a 15,220 word long corpus, in order to detect instances of grammaticalization. 1.2 Specific objectives 1.2.1 To track the form of the items diachronically by means of their etymology. 1.2.2 To quantify the occurrence of the items present in the texts and contrast the numbers. 1.2.3 To seek for instances of grammaticalization. 2

(Tom Barret) The objective of this chapter is to discuss the role of identity, autonomy and agency in second language acquisitio n (SLA). I argue that science and myth have much in common and whatever theory we use to try to understand any phenomenon, in our case SLA, we will be offering a me taphor, a way of seeing something in terms of another. My metaphor will be Chaos Theory. Taking the assumption that SLA is a chaotic complex system, I will demonstrate that identity construction is in intimate relation with agency and that identity, autonomy and agency can move SLA chaotic systems to the edge of chaos, understood as an overwhelming experience that changes the learners' behaviors. Some examples taken from a corpus of language learning histories will be used to exemplify the theoretical assum ptions.

concept language in two academic texts from an author whose area of
research is the biolinguistic subfield of linguistics. The main objective is
to illustrate the domain in which the lexical concept mentioned above
exists. The theoretical framework which supports this thesis is based on the theory relative to conceptual (or cognitive) metaphor theory, one of the major constructs which make up the cognitive-linguistic enterprise.
At the same time, and as a parallel argumentation, it is introduced
the discussion regarding the status of linguistics as a science and the need to study its most important concepts systematically, by means of a subfield entirely dedicated to do this: metalinguistics, or the linguistic study of the discourse of the linguists.
