The preponderance of the research literature on the promotion of positive psychology tends to focus on broad social competences. However, there is an emerging body of evidence that supports employing specific techniques that are more amenable to school-based practice, can also promote happiness and life satisfaction in children

This book focuses on the nuts and bolts of this effective method for differentiating classroom content, process skills, and creative products of gifted learners. In this concise introduction, Dr. Sally M. Reis and Joseph S. Renzulli discuss the research on curriculum compacting and the steps employed in implementing it in any classroom. Case studies of its effectiveness on schoolwide enrichment are also included. This is one of the books in Prufrock Press' popular Practical Strategies Series in Gifted Education. This series offers a unique collection of tightly focused books that provide a concise, practical introduction to important topics concerning the education of gifted children. The guides offer a perfect beginner's introduction to key information about gifted and talented education.

What services should be provided to students who are identified for gifted and talented programs, as opposed to those that should be given to all students? Can enrichment and gifted programs help to develop academic gifts and talents? Can creative productivity be enhanced when students participate in enrichment or gifted programs? How can we help children learn to think creatively, and value opportunities for creative, self-selected work? The Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) was developed to encourage and develop creative productivity in young people. In this chapter, a chronology of how the SEM model was developed, a description of the original Enrichment Triad Model, and a summary of pertinent research highlights are presented . A description of the model is followed by an explanation of a new SEM service delivery resource that uses a computer generated profile of each student's academic strengths, interests, learning styles, and preferred modes of expression. After this strength-based profile is completed, a highly sophisticated search engine matches carefully selected internet resources with each student's profile. This breakthrough in technology enables teachers to provide true differentiated instruction and enrichment and saves thousands of hours of teachers' time in implementing the SEM.

This study sought to augment this gap in the literature by surveying individuals with ASD who are currently college students or who have previously attended college. Thirty-five individuals completed an online survey. These individuals reported receiving extensive academic supports that enabled their academic success. Their reported difficulties in the social and emotional domains received less support. In addition, not all areas of campus life were supportive, as study abroad and career service offices were reported to not understand individuals with ASD. Overall, the results of this survey indicate the importance of self-advocacy and the need for institutions of higher education to provide comprehensive supports for individuals with ASD in the academic, social, and emotional domains in order to effectively integrate this group into the campus environment.

This paper presents the results of an international evaluation of the characteristics and content of the top 10 ranked results (i.e., not including sponsored results - pay-per-click) returned when one of five terms related to developmental disabilities (i.e., ADHD, autism, down syndrome, learning disability, intellectual disability) was entered into one of six country specific Google online search engines (i.e., Australia (https://www.google.com.au), Canada (https://www.google.ca), Ireland (https://www.google.ie), New Zealand (https://www.google.co.nz), the United Kingdom (https://www.google.co.uk), and the United States (https://www.google.com)) on October 22, 2013. Collectively, we found that international consumers of websites related to developmental disabilities will encounter di...

The increase in the number of higher-functioning individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD)... more The increase in the number of higher-functioning individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is likely to lead to an increased interest in postsecondary opportunities including degree-granting college and university programs. To provide an understanding of the current evidence-base for supporting individuals with ASD in higher education, this article reports the results of a systematic review of the literature concerning college students with ASD. Overall, 20 articles describing 69 individuals met the inclusion criteria. This small number of articles and participants indicates the scarcity of research on this topic and only two of these studies were experimental in nature. These studies described a video-self modeling intervention and a counseling intervention respectively. Eighteen "case studies" were also present in the literature that described difficulties ranging from anxiety to housing concerns. This review deliniates the limitation of our understanding of effec...

This article summarizes the empirical evidence supporting the use of video self-modeling with individuals with autism spectrum disorders to increase language and communication, increase social skills, modify behavior, and teach functional skills. A comparison of the empirical evidence supporting the use of video self-modeling with other video modeling interventions is also provided. The use of video self-modeling as part of a continuum of strategies for this population is supported by the current research base. C

Documentation guidelines assist postsecondary disability service providers in making decisions about eligibility and reasonable accommodations. However, documentation is often varied in scope, comprehensiveness, and quality, requiring a great deal of professional judgment during the review process. This study examined service provider decision-making when presented with documentation of learning disability with varying levels of information. Results indicated service providers' value comprehensive Objective Evidence, but importance of the data used in decision-making varied by demographic variables, such as years of experience and type of training in reviewing disability documentation. Implications for practice are addressed.
