Moreover, the regeneration policies of cities in non-EU Balkan countries with a distinctive transitional path remain largely unexplored. The paper contributes to filling these voids by investigating a specific demolition-based urban regeneration strategy named permanent reconstruction, which has been launched in Novi Sad, Serbia’s second largest city, and applied to low-density neighborhoods with a derelict housing stock, being seen as a tool for achieving sustainable urban development. The specific research aims are to explain the origin of this strategy; analyze the institutional and planning framework, mechanisms, and dynamics of the regeneration process through a case study; and assess its outcomes based on a mixed methodology. The main research objective is to identify the issues of a post-socialist entrepren...

The focus of the research was the impact of the Arsenal brownfield regeneration on the urban development of Tivat in Montenegro, following its decades-long transformations from industrial settlements (military shipyard) to the “new town” of Porto Montenegro (the center of nautical tourism), which is 10 km away from the UNESCO World Heritage site in Kotor, which had a strong influence on the development of Tivat. The theoretical and empirical research was focused on three aspects of sustainability. This study identifies key parameters that indicate the specific causes and consequences of the urban transformations, as well as impacts of nautical tourism...

Since residential space is considered to be vital for physical, mental and social wellbeing, this sudden and global paradigm shift presents an opportunity to redefine the current housing concepts towards greater long-term resilience in the context of present, pandemic and future challenges. The results of the survey of housing users in Podgorica confirmed the need to address this issue. The article discusses a possible model of resilient adaptation of residential buildings and neighborhoods in Podgorica, Montenegro. The model addresses the flexibility of the apartment units, existence of indoor and outdoor common areas for social activities within the building and immediate contact with nature, and it is applicable in the ...

Global processes require a systematic strategy and systemic synergistic engagement in the development of cities in 21st centuries. Urbanism as a profession and a discipline should be developed parallel and in correlation, based on the principles of integrality and communication skills, in order to enable development of the sustainable urban system. The importance of integrated urbanism and other disciplines are also emphasized as well as their synergies activities. The paper also presents the positive examples of urban theory and practice in the world, which influenced the direction of development of the modern urbanism. Transdisciplinarity is a priority methodology for sustainable urban development, which is insufficiently developed in Montenegro, but there is a basis for its development. It is necessary to unite different social sensibili...

The concept of THE, through transdisciplinary built environment design, can strongly contribute to the development of the health systems and strengthen the need for integrated treatment of contemporary healthcare issues that can respond to the needs of the local and global users. Transforming predominantly closed national healthcares into universal, open, accessible, flexible total healing spaces articulates new, sustainable intentions on a new platform of universal integrated healthcare values.

Emphasis is placed upon the littoral. New criteria for the study of public open space and revitalizing environment models in the context of establishing a balance between the natural and built, are being explored and defined, as well bringing about the attractiveness which is necessary for the development of tourism as the main economic activity in Montenegro. The diversity of beaches, their potential as well as natural values and geographical specificity of the Montenegrin space, require thoughtful engagement in the shaping and development of a touristic environment. Montenegro has not used the potentials of public spaces of the coast. A lack of harmony and order is expressed, as well as the small number of attractive contents in multiple segments. The intensive construction, mass tourism, degradation and devastation of space at t...

The concept of sustainable urban regeneration is a central issue in contemporary global framework... more The concept of sustainable urban regeneration is a central issue in contemporary global frameworks. This chapter provides a contribution towards demonstrating the complexity of sustainable urban regeneration in the twenty-first century, with an emphasis on the spatial–physical aspect. The aim is an essential implementation of the theoretical transdisciplinary discourse into practice of the regeneration of urban areas. Previous theoretical transdisciplinary orientation is in practice dominantly implemented in disciplinary framework. With the transformation of conventional disciplinary methodologies into a universal transdisciplinary research platform, we can respond to the complex sustainability issues that contemporary urban practice is facing. Integrated research of spatial determinants released from disciplinary autonomy articulates new energy, ready to face the challenges posed by contemporary global processes. Challenges in implementing transdisciplinary practices are varied and...

The focus of this paper is the perception of a traditional street in the context of sustainable urban regeneration. The aim of this study is to submit a proposal, through the Urban Design course at the Faculty of Architecture in Podgorica, for the physical regeneration of twelve traditional streets (eight street directions) that define the central core of Podgorica, known as Mirkova Varoš. These streets are the sites of social processes, interpreters of cultural and identity values of the society, and primary keepers of collective memory. It was detected that the attractiveness of the case study streets is weakening due to inadequate social and professional engagement in the processes of preservation and regeneration over time and also due to new users’ needs. Global requirements reflect the ...

These facilities and areas are most often situated in central parts of towns, and their revitalisation results in creation of new facilities which often become symbols or landmarks of such towns. The meaning of brownfield regeneration is considered on the basis of American and European experiences in the context of sustainable development of towns and cities.

The study is based on the view that autonomous action of disciplines in the case of architecture and urbanism as multidisciplinary activities is limited, and an integrated approach to solving complex problems in the urban system is required. A global approach to research and solving urban issues is an important actor of sustainable development, where universities are central in this process. Collaborative educational discourses with a high degree of cooperation can develop an adequate platform for responses to the complex issues of the urban system. Producing experts with a developed awareness of a comprehensive understanding of the problem and transdisciplinary collaborative knowledge can strongly contribute to sustainable improvement, control, and management of urban spaces.

The research is based on empirical analysis and the semantic differential method. The aim of this paper is to form an objective criterion for the design of desirable public open spaces of the city in the 21st century, based on the subjective assessment of the space through observing twelve photographs of typical visual resources of Niksic, with emphasis on the visual and aesthetic dimension. Research results point out that poly functional, dynamic, associative, homogeneous, inclusive, authentic spaces with lots of natural elements achieve desired visual effect on users. It has been concluded that it is necessary to revitalize certain public open spaces of Niksic as the primary visual resource of the city.

Architecture, to some extent includes other arts which
can significantly influence the shaping of an urban space (artistic
interventions). These arts largely shape the visual culture in
combination with other categories: film, TV, Internet, information
technologies that are "changing the world" etc. In the area of
architecture and urbanism, visual culture is achieved through the
aspects of visual spatial effects. This is one of the most significant unmovable cultural heritage monuments in Cetinje's historic center. Presentation of the project for the restoration of the mausoleum and the process of construction works indicated the specificity and sensitivity of the restoration and conservation of cultural monuments that carry significant messages from the history of the people and are a part of collective memory. During the last three decades, the mausoleum was repaired twice. The first structural sanation was done in 1985, eliminating consequences of the earthquake of 1979, and the other one was done on the initiation of the Republic Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments in Cetinje, following an investigation of the existing state of the mausoleum’s structure, which was conducted in 2004. This paper presents the character of de...

Architecture and urbanism as complex disciplines that start from the existential social needs and reach to the most complex challenges and aspirations involve complex approaches and complex relations. Professional educational environment from architecture and urbanism aspect is integral. It includes the study of forms and models of urban space planning to architectural structures, details, materials, environmental challenges, as well as new paradigms of shaping life and work in the community. This requires the involvement of various disciplines and forms of knowledge for forming a competent and productive response to modern challenges of the real world. With the development and adoption of transdisciplinary methodology in environmental higher education, a platform can be developed for sustainable urban development in a sustainable social community. Technological aspect has a central role in that process.
