This article delineates and critically juxtaposes the differential public commemorations of the V... more This article delineates and critically juxtaposes the differential public commemorations of the Vietnam War and the Holocaust in the US. We elucidate how the tragedies of the Holocaust have been integrated into US public memory as a central part of the American story, solidifying the image of the United States as a powerful and moral nation that rescues desperate people from tyranny. In contrast, public commemorations of the highly divisive Vietnam War are sparse, if at all, in great part because they would re-ignite questions about the role of the US in Vietnam and in the suffering of its victims. While the Holocaust enables the United States to re-narrate national glory, the Vietnam War calls attention to US defeat and upsets the narrative of rescue and liberation. Through a critical juxtaposition of these two public memories, we assert that the moral and political divisiveness of the Vietnam War constitutes one unacknowledged source of the ascendancy and centrality of the Holocaust in American memory. Through our relational analysis of differential public memories, we draw on and contribute to the field of memory studies.
Following these are chapters on some of the prominent (and not so prominent) research on ecology ... more Following these are chapters on some of the prominent (and not so prominent) research on ecology and environment, gender, and “urban ways of life.” Ethnographically, much material in the book deals with Malaysian peasants and fishermen and Borneo communities. Some of the classic studies of Thai religion are also spotlighted, along with case-study examples on development from the Philippines (although work on folk Catholicism is underplayed, and there is no mention of historian Vicente Rafael’s research, so vital for the anthropological study of the entire region). As noted, coverage of the Indonesianist research is uneven: cogent in some areas, oddly incomplete elsewhere. For instance, the anthropology of emotion and the anthropology of literature and literacies are not treated in any detail. The chapter on gender and the sexes is typical in compositional format. The authors condense the findings of numerous monographs in lecture-like style, pointing out, for instance, a Southeast Asia–wide pattern in which women manage household cash and engage in petty trade. Research on women’s relatively high status across the region is then related to such economic realities. Moving beyond this formulation, the authors then summarize the well-known research of Aihwa Ong and Diane Wolf on young women factory workers, globalizing economies, and women’s agency. The authors then focus on a favored, often fairly unfamiliar, study, which they then use to critique the mainstream work. In “Urban Ways of Life,” this combative lecture/summary style works well in part because the case-study material is so compelling (e.g., James Siegel’s writings on Surakarta under Soeharto). Other sections of the book are less illuminating and raise the following question: Should not the students themselves be doing this summarizing, since so much of the anthropological research, when well chosen, is so theoretically suggestive? This volume represents one way of recollecting the history of anthropology about Southeast Asia; studies such as James Boon’s deft Anthropological Romance of Bali, 1597–1972 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1977) offer quite another approach. The highly competitive environment in the cosmetic industry makes it a valuable area to study brand loyalty in cosmetic products. Brand loyalty is one of the important aspects which is significant for the management to sustain competitive advantages in the market. In this research, the relationship between brand loyalty and determinants of brand loyalty was unveiled, with special focus on brand trust, brand price and perceived value. The general objective was to examine the determinants of brand loyalty in cosmetic industry in Nyeri Town. The specific objectives were to determine the effects of brand price on brand loyalty, to assess the effects of brand trust on brand loyalty, to establish the effect of perceived quality on brand loyalty. The researcher adopted a descriptive survey research design where questionnaires were used for data collection. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and has been presented using tables. The researcher used Karl Pearson correlation coefficient and logistic regression analysis to statistically analyze the data. The target population was 60 salon operators who are consumers of Cosmetic Products in Nyeri Town. A census study was conducted in the salons within Nyeri Town. This study supports the view that brand trust, brand perceived value and price should remain prime focus for the organization to maintain market share in today's competitive business environment.

This essay constitutes a first step in a project focused on re-conceptualizing Holocaust survivors and their families through the lens of agency and victimization. Many children and, more recently, grandchildren of Jewish Holocaust survivors trace their genealogy to their parent's or grandparent's past, and self-identify through this experience. The specific terms and labels used to identify or self-identify reflect different kinds of assumptions as well as claims on how that particular past affects their present. My preliminary findings suggest a paradoxical inversion of victimization and agency in some of the terminology used to identify or self-identify survivors as well as children of survivors.

These connections are not simply uni-directional, but dynamic and interactive, evolving over time. Although some of my research questions may have paralleled my personal challenges, the Holocaust survivors I have researched also deeply affected my emotional life and personal trajectory at different times. I briefly discuss my genealogical inheritance coupled with an in-depth focus on my scholarship.
Substantial research in multiple disciplines on Jewish Holocaust survivors and their postwar offs... more Substantial research in multiple disciplines on Jewish Holocaust survivors and their postwar offspring has been dominated by the discourse of trauma, focusing on the intergenerational transmission of trauma. Based on the narratives of 35 children of Holocaust survivors in the United States, my research counters and nuances this over-determined “paradigm of trauma” by illuminating their more diverse cache of family memories. Some parents transmitted their Holocaust experiences in lively and colorful ways,as an exciting adventure, as a fairy tale, or as a humorous story. The narratives suggest that for these children of survivors, the postmemories of their parents’ history and trauma are embedded in other positive family memories, including the way in which the stories were told. Thus, postmemories of trauma do not necessarily elide or dominate other more positive family memories, including memories of joy
