This is attributable to a disjunction between the broadcasting ban on proscribed organisations between 1971 and 1993 and the obligation to present public issues “in an objective and impartial manner.”
Drawing on interviews and new archival material, I present a case study of a series of documentaries by Radharc, one of the longest running independent documentary production companies in the Irish Republic with a foothold in both RTÉ and Channel 4. The initial banning of these documentaries, its overturning and international political intervention over their broadcast, illustrates the politics behind British and Irish television’s approach to documenting the Troubles. It also queries the legacy of RTÉ during this period and its disavowal of the daily realities of life in Northern Ireland.
