Ghanaian public were asked questions regarding Chinese manufactured products and responses were used to measure their attitude and image towards China. A paper titled "The Rationality of Soft Power Resource: Assessing the Impact of COVID-19 on China's influence in Africa" was produced. The hypotheses of this research were that since some Africans were allegedly abuse in China over COVID-19 fears: 1. The presentation of China in the COVID-19 narrative and the later alleged abuse of Africans in China is likely to shape a negative Ghanaian public perception of China and its soft power resource (manufactured products). 2. Ghanaian public are rational actors who seek to maximise utility (satisfaction) they get from a resource. Thus, their perception and attitude towards China regarding COVID-19 narrative is likely to depend on the relationship between the utility of China's soft power resource (manufactured products) and the narration. The data was collected through online with an online survey instrument called Survey Heart. A total sample size of 1020 were collected between August 1 and November 30, 2020. The data revealed that Ghanaian public generally have positive image of China as a result of the benefits Chinese manufactured products offer, and that, narration of China in COVID-19 and the fact that Africans were allegedly abuse in China played no role in shaping Ghanaian perception of China. The data revealed that, Ghanaian public perception and response to China's representation in COVID-19 is a function of their interest and benefits they derive from Chinese products, a situation that helps to shape a positive image towards China without been influenced by China's COVID-19 narrative. This article critically examines the contributions of Pan-Africanism to the nexus of African agen... more This article critically examines the contributions of Pan-Africanism to the nexus of African agency debate in the broader spectrum of great power-small power relationships, particularly during the era of colonialism. The article puts special emphasis on the colonial empire as a great power and Africa as a small power in the tussle of what was known as the “gunboat diplomacy.” What were the approaches; who were the actors; what were the grand geopolitical strategies employed in exerting influence in the complex relationship between the colonies and the colonialists? Relying on archival records (online), interviews, speeches, and other publications, sifted through the functionalism and neo-functionalism theories, the article contends that the Pan-African thinkers and advocates were significant actors in the fight against European dominance in Africa and provided a gateway for the final nationalist movement and liberation of the continent.

The purpose of this paper is to test, empirically, the assumption that Covid-19 would negatively influence perceptions of China in Ghana, due to its perceived relationship with the pandemic. We characterise Chinese manufactured products as soft power resources and analyse the role they play in addressing the personal needs and interests of Ghanaians and how they affect positive and negative perceptions of China amid the Covid-19 pandemic. We used a mixed research method and collected data from a sample size of 1,020 for analysis. We found that Ghanaians are rational actors who maximise the perceived gains of their actions in pursuit of their objectives. Of major concern is how Asia is gradually becoming a nuclear weapon zone. Many of its populous nations such as China, India, Pakistan, Japan, (and North-Korea) have sought to obtain nuclear weapons for security and status. Interestingly, the more these states seek to concretize their security through nuclear proliferation, the more they create security dilemma which in turn further exacerbates its wanton spread. The study also assesses what informs the choice of certain news items over others and why some news items are presented prominently on the front page over others. Three methods were used in this study: a survey, content analysis and in-depth interviews. Seventy-two editions of the Daily Graphic and in all, 202 news items were content analysed. The study found that although news values are vital in news selectivity, the Daily Graphic does not use news values as the sole criterion for news selection. What is important is whether a particular news story is in the interest of the public and that it has a high range. Thus, the consequence of such a news story affects the majority of Ghanaians. The finding also suggest that news values as criteria for news selection by the media in the West and replicated by African media should be given a second look.
