Hi Berkley LJ group,

I was wondering if anybody out there knows about a Japanese band called The Pillows.  They will be having a concert at Slims in SF on 9/7.  If anyone is planning to go and would like to travel together from UC Berkeley (it's safer and more fun!), please reply to this post or PM me.

Thanks!

Not bad for a team that was slated for elimination from the Cal athletic menu. The alumni saved the program via a fund raising drive. This is what we got for our money. GO BEARS

question about past friday's free concert

Share Flag
Mitch; laughing
This Friday (the 11th) there was a free concert on lower sproul in front of Eshleman.  It started around noon? I think.  Actually, it might not have been Friday.  I don't remember now, haha.  Anyway.

I was on my way to the Tang Center and couldn't stop to really listen to much but really enjoyed the little that I did happen to hear.  I thought the group was called "Yoyo" but tried locating them online with little success.

If anyone happens to know who performed there then, please let me know!  Very interested in looking them up/googling them.

Thanks in advance,
S

Selling old readers/practice exams

I have some old readers (EPSM 102D AC being the most recent) and practice exams+answer keys for Chem 3A. Does anyone know where would be a good place to sell them? I don't even care that much about the money, I just want them out of my house but don't feel crazy about just dumping them...

I looked at comegetused, which used to be really active back in the day, but their search function is broken! So I can't even find the page on which I could list.

Thanks for any help, and good luck in the coming semester!

Justify my post-grad work?

Share Flag
Add note: I'm fully out of academia, and employed in the public realm (see: Dante's sec 3, lvl 5).

Recently, I had a meeting with my boss. In this meeting, I handed him a list of 3 Extension classes and a professional webinar for field certification that I would like to complete this semester. The total (which I was asking him to pay for) was $2,000.00+.

He checked off approval on the field certification course (wasn't surprised by that, my immediate supervisor has been pushing for me to take the silly test since he figured out my 5-yr work history met the boards requirements) and ignored the other 3 (despite the carefully formulated reasons for wanting to take them).

Then he leaned back and asked: "...so, um... when exactly do you think you are going to be done with school?"

Good question, Mr. Boss Man.

I hold a Masters and two B.A's. I also hold an A.A. from a community college and post-grad work from 2 community colleges, 2 extension centers, and 1 private school. On average it seems that I've found some reason (god, only knows if it's a good reason) to take 1-3 classes a semester since I've graduated. Usually, they are all programming classes. However, at my current job, my programming workload is low and as a result this hasn't translated into a clear benefit for my company**.

When it comes to school, my boss only has one concern: how many letters are behind your name. Adding letters behind my name (through certification, and degrees) makes me more valuable to him because he can make more $$$ on me by shelling my initials out on grants.

Frankly, I have zero interest in going on through another degree program (all the degree programs offered in my field limit me in letting me take the classes I want to take and keep up with my current job). I particularly have no interest in a PhD (after my Masters, that's really my last 'degree' option). I also have no interest in academia (frankly, there are precious few benefits to having a PhD in a professional arena-- in fact, from where I sit, they are not much different then having a Masters).

If I was to apply to grad school again, I'd be calling 7 colleges for transcripts. Hopefully, my boss never knows that.

I really think taking classes (which I always do outside of work hours) are beneficial to me. I also believe (in the long run) that they increase my professional worth (despite the fact they don't and won't add letters to my name). However, I do seem to have a problem in selling my boss on that fact. Short of writing an app for office-wide use (which is plausible), I don't have many convincing ways of selling my boss on paying for these ventures. Do you?

Overall, Boss has offered me a shot of writing a "plan" for him to justify my reasons for continuing with school, if you have thoughts (or experience with this) I'd love to know 'em.

**I have automated a few of my common data-mining tasks, in the scope of the companies overall 'for-profit' purgative, this merely has helped me more then helped them.

med school after graduating with a non-premed major

Hi,

If I just graduated with a major in a non-premed subject and am thinking about going back to community college or something to take medical school pre-requisites, is there someone on campus or elsewhere who can advise me about how to do this and what my chances are, assuming I do well in classes/tests?

Is there any way as an alumni to take advantage of any kind of advising or information about this kind of stuff? Any support or advice anyone knows about?

I looked at post-bac programs, but they are super expensive and don't always work.

Transcripts mailed in individual envelopes?

Share Flag
I'm ordering multiple transcripts online through the Registrar's office to be mailed to my address. The grad schools I'm applying to prefer that they be sent by the applicant rather than institution, but the transcripts need to be sealed -- because I'm ordering multiple copies, I just wanted to make sure that they'll all come in separate sealed envelopes. Could anyone confirm?

They really should be separate, but the question wasn't answered by any of the Registrar's transcript FAQs (or LJ archives) and I wanted to double-check before clicking "submit" on my order.

Thanks in advance for any info!

Can a current Cal student do me a HUGE favor? (unemployed recent graduate)

Share Flag
I graduated in May and am having a terrible time trying to find a job. Once you are out of their system, UCB is more than happy to forget about you and cut your access to the Callisto / CalJobs resource. Since I barely have enough money to pay rent for a couple more months, I cannot pay for a subscription to the service, which I think would greatly increase my chances of finding a job in the area.

I am wondering if there are any current students here that can let me log in to your CalJobs account to look at the job postings. I will not apply for anything through the site, since it is in your name- instead I would simply look at the posts and apply separately. Current students have free access, and even if you already use it, me using your login would not restrict your use in any way. There's really nothing to lose, and you would be helping a former student immensely.

Thank you so much, and go bears!

Free ties (and a little shameless peddling)

Share Flag
2046
I have a handful of ties I'd like to get out of my closet. If you want one for free, send me a message at [email protected]. I can either mail it to you or leave it in my GSI mailbox for you to pick up. If you can, tell me the color and pattern of your suit and shirt, and I'll give you a tie that best matches what you have. It would also help to know your height, weight, and skin tone, but you can keep that private if you want.

Please only take one if you plan to wear the tie to student club activities, job interviews, or conferences. I'd like these to go to someone who needs a tie for semi-professional and professional events, but doesn't yet have any.

Note, these aren't high end ties, but they should serve you fine if you're an undergraduate who just needs to look professional and sharp.

(Also, my apologies for hawking on here, but hopefully the free ties make up for this: I have $30 in store credit to Pretty Penny, a vintage clothing store in Rockridge, that I'm selling for $20. If anyone wants it, let me know.)

About to go viral

The Cal Men's Soccer team has a very long and boring bus ride on the saturday between games when they go north to play Washington and Oregon. So Davis Paul, the video wonderchild and the team's biggest point earner, made a video of the team singing a Chris Brown song.

And Mr. Brown has given in props in his tweeter account. Almost 18,000 hits already.

THIS is a fun video.

Cool Places to Study? Cool Nature Walks?

Share Flag
Hi everyone, I'm new to the area and I'm not really sure where to start in terms of exploring Berkeley and the Bay Area.  What are some of your favorite places to study either on or off campus?   Are there any coffee shops where you enjoy studying?   So far, none of the libraries are really doing it for me, ambiance-wise.  I'm looking for places that aren't too loud and in the case of coffee shops, ones where I'll feel comfortable spending hours there and only buying one cup of coffee.

Other question:  what are some of your favorite nature-y places in Berkeley and the Bay Area?  I'm looking for places that are easy to get by bike or public transport.  I've heard that there are some nice trails in the hills but I'm not sure where the trailheads are....Thanks!
