An evaluation of 12,115 reproductive tracts of sows was carried out (07/04/97 – 13/03/2000) at th... more An evaluation of 12,115 reproductive tracts of sows was carried out (07/04/97 – 13/03/2000) at the Manizales’s Central slaughter house (Colombia). The main alteration found was the vaginal septum (1,528 cases), representing 61.9% out of all alterations and 12.6% out of total tracts evaluated. All vaginal septum cases were found in the vaginal vestibule junction of gilts. Most vaginal septa (99.78%) were lower than 11 mm thick and 96.04% had dorso-ventral direction. Vaginal septum was found alone (85%) or associated to other alterations (15%), being the parovarian cyst the most important, observed in 159 cases (10.40%). This alteration is probably aributed to genetic errors in the fusion of the Mullerian tubules and its main consequences might be: troubles in copulation, dystocia at delivery and hygienic disturbances in the genital tract.

It were used 254 ejaculates from 48 boars between eight and 48 months of age that were classi- fied as young (3 years). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance for repea- ted measurements in the same individual (random effect). The effect of source (block effect) and age group on PGC, acroso- mal integrity, membrane function, and proportion of live and with cytoplasmic droplets sperm cells were evaluated. Semen of eight commercial males from two farms in the central-western region of Colombia (four boars in each farm) was frozen and tested to select two males with high freezability (MHF) and two with low freezability (MLF), according to the percentage of functionally competent sperm (FCS). Immediately after the collection was completed, the SP and sperm from the males selected were separated by centrifugation to combine the two types of plasma with the two types of sperm, incubate them for three hours and then freeze them. The variables evaluated were: sperm morphology, structural and functional integrity of plasmatic membrane, progressive and total motility, DNA fragmentation, acrosome integrity, capacitated sperm and FCS. realizó la validación de dos técnicas de referencia in vitro para evaluación de la calidad semina... more realizó la validación de dos técnicas de referencia in vitro para evaluación de la calidad seminal de semen porcino: el test de fragmentación del ADN espermático (TFAE) y el test de penetración in vitro con ovocitos inmaduros (TPIVOI), con el fin de obtener un análisis estandarizado y de mayor valor predictivo del potencial de fertilidad de una muestra seminal. Los protocolos adoptados para las dos técnicas, fueron evaluados mediante análisis de: Repetibilidad, Reproducibilidad, combinación de Repetibilidad y Reproducibilidad (R&R), Robustez e Incertidumbre. Los resultados mostraron que las dos técnicas son consistentes, no son afectadas por el analista, son adecuadas en relación de R&R, se establecieron condiciones de análisis en robustez y su incertidumbre es conocida; razón por la cual son conformes para su uso en el laboratorio

Evaluación in vitro de la viabilidad del semen porcino hasta 120 horas de almacenamiento en refri... more Evaluación in vitro de la viabilidad del semen porcino hasta 120 horas de almacenamiento en refrigeración 1 RESUMEN: El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar los cambios de pH, morfología, integridad acrosomal y supervivencia espermática, de semen diluido en BTS y refrigerado de 11 verracos (siete línea paterna y cuatro línea materna), cada 24 horas, desde 0 h (momento de recepción) hasta 120 h, tres veces con intervalos de un mes. Los análisis estadísticos se realizaron usando PROC GLM, MIXED y GENMOD de SAS (SAS Inst. Cary, NC), por medio de un modelo mixto para evaluar el efecto del tiempo de almacenamiento (TA) y de línea, sobre las variables evaluadas. Se utilizó la prueba de χ 2 para evaluar el efecto TA sobre células de descamación y aglutinación. A las 120 h, los espermatozoides con acrosoma normal disminuyeron; la línea materna tuvo 24,3% menos probabilidades de presentar aglutinación espermática. No se encontró efecto significativo de línea y TA sobre: morfología, pH, supervivencia espermática y presencia de células de descamación. Se concluyó que el semen porcino diluido en BTS, con 3×10 9 espermatozoides y refrigerado, mantiene características indicativas de viabilidad hasta las 120 h de almacenamiento. La evaluación seminal in vitro es una herramienta que ofrece la posibilidad de utilizar dosis seminales que potencialmente son desperdiciadas.
