In many areas around the world, historical marine pollution monitoring has been based on potentia... more In many areas around the world, historical marine pollution monitoring has been based on potential toxicity of chemicals intentionally or unintentionally released to the environment; concentration of particular chemicals in environmental samples and the general wellbeing of ecosystems or key species within the ecosystem. However, these analyses offer little insight in predicting effects of related contaminants to the residential biota as bioavailability may be limited. The use of community structures as well are always inadequate in determining the impact of contaminants since they sometimes fail to discriminate between the effects of contaminants and those resulting from unrelated non-contaminant factors like water quality fluctuations, physical parameters and biotic alteration. This therefore makes it difficult to establish management strategies required for the protection of biotic systems. Currently, there is rising demand for conservation and protection of marine biota and humans from contamination arising from polluted marine environments. This therefore calls for need for toxicity tests to determine bioavailability and effects of these contaminants. In this context, this paper studied some contaminants monitoring state in Port-Reitz, Mombasa, Kenya and tried to design a monitoring program to establish acute and chronic effects of contaminants using bio indicators/toxicity tests.
