This consists of the insertion of a homoerotic subtext between two presumably heterosexual characters in a TV show with the intention to attract a queer audience, but without risking alienating the more conservative audience who might not want a queer relationship depicted on screen. We will analyze the creation of this phenomenon as well as its effects on the audience by studying the cases of TV shows Supernatural (2005), Sherlock (2010), and Teen Wolf (2011).

Being familiarized with the Sherlock Holmes presented in Steven Moffat's TV series for BBC One, the striking resemblances between this modern version and the Victorian one when it comes to sexuality and drug addiction were the first thing to get my attention. Doyle's most famous character is, undoubtedly, unique in his ways: Mr. Holmes is a man of dubious ethics, who does not fit in the male ideal of Victorian society, and whose sexual orientation is, at best, ambiguous.
