Lluís Cifuentes i Comamala is “Serra Húnter” Associate Professor (‘Profesor Agregado “Serra Húnter”/Profesor Contratado Doctor’) at the University of Barcelona (UB) since 2007, where he lectures on Catalan medieval literature and research methodology. He was trained in Medieval History at the University of Valencia (licentiate, 1987) and in the History of Science at the Institució Milà i Fontanals-CSIC (Barcelona, 1987-1993 and 1995-1998), at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (MA, 1990; PhD, 1993, director: Luis García Ballester), and at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Paris, 1993-1995, supervisor: Danielle Jacquart). He has had several research contracts (I3P CSIC 1995-1998, at the IMF-CSIC; Marie Curie 1993-1994, at the EPHE; Ramón y Cajal 2003-2006, at the UB-Philology). Since 2004, he is researcher in charge of several competitive research projects funded by the MICINN/MINECO, based at the UB (HUM2004-05176/FILO, FFI2008-02163/FISO, FFI2011-29117-C02-01, FFI2014-53050-C5-3-P). He is a member of the inter-university Research Group “Culture and Literature in the Late Middle Ages” <www.narpan.net>, funded by the Generalitat de Catalunya (PI: Lola Badia, UB) and of the Thematic Network “Language and Science” <www.lenguayciencia.net>, funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (PI: Cecilio Garriga, UAB). He is a member (direction board) of the Centre de Documentació Ramon Llull <www.stel.ub.edu/centrellull>, and of the Institute for Research on Medieval Cultures (IRCVM) <www.ircvm.ub.edu>, both of the UB. He is a specialist in the study of the spread of medicine, science and technology in Catalan in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period, and of the spread of the model of university medicine and doctors and their interrelation with non-university circles (related fields: study and publication of early Catalan texts; history of medicine, science and technology; history of professions; history of books and written culture; digital humanities and philology). He directs the virtual forum Sciència.cat <www.sciencia.cat> in which can be consulted in open access a digital corpus that systematizes the basic material of the research by the team of the same name (database Sciència.cat DB and digital library), as well as a large amount of research and dissemination of the research works published by its members and other researchers.

The chronicles of James I (c. 1270-1276), Bernat Desclot (c. 1280-1288), Ramon Muntaner (1325-132... more The chronicles of James I (c. 1270-1276), Bernat Desclot (c. 1280-1288), Ramon Muntaner (1325-1328) and Peter the Ceremonious (c. 1345-1385), known as the four great Catalan chronicles, are one of the best sets of historiographic works from mediaeval Europe. Eminent scholars, historians and philologists have studied and published them, and translations in numerous languages have also been issued. Nonetheless, they are still undeservedly unknown outside the circle of experts in Catalan history and literature. In 1971, Ferran Soldevila published a joint edition of all four chronicles with profuse historical annotations, which was recently revised and expanded by the historian Maria Teresa Ferrer i Mallol and the linguist Jordi Bruguera in an edition which currently provides the best access to these works. This article provides a summary of current knowledge of these works from an interdisciplinary perspective, along with a few new insights.

Eminents estudiosos, historiadors i filòlegs les han estudiat i editat i també se n’han publicat traduccions a diverses llengües, però encara són immerescudament poc conegudes més enllà dels especialistes en la història i la literatura catalanes. L’any 1971, Ferran Soldevila va publicar-ne una edició conjunta amb una profusa anotació històrica, que recentment ha estat revisada i ampliada per la historiadora Maria Teresa Ferrer i Mallol i el lingüista Jordi Bruguera en una edició que, a dia d’avui, és la que permet un millor accés a aquestes obres. En aquest treball es presenta una síntesi del coneixement que actualment se’n té des d’una perspectiva interdiscipli-nària, i s’hi fan també algunes aportacions inèdites.

Moreover, we conveniently contextualize them in the biography of Tresbens, particularly to provide important news about how and when he left the Foix region, where he was originally from, and where he had practiced medicine in the service of Gaston I of Lévis, lord of Leran, and his arrival in Catalonia until he settled in Barcelona and became the king's physician.

One of the most surprising aspects of the history of surgery in the medieval and early modern per... more One of the most surprising aspects of the history of surgery in the medieval and early modern periods is the intense use of vernacular languages in the dissemination of treatises on the subject, via translations, and even in the writing of originals. This vernacularization of surgery began in the thirteenth century and is closely associated with the creation of a new medical system in the Latin West and with the birth of a rational “new surgery”, linked to Galenism, to school education, and to the transmission of knowledge in books. This article presents a summary of this interrelationship and the role played by the vernacularization of surgery in the success of these processes, and it upholds the need for an interdisciplinary research methodology in order to gain an overall understanding of it.

This article aims to prove the active role played by artisans as consumers (readers, owners, copy... more This article aims to prove the active role played by artisans as consumers (readers, owners, copyists) and authors of literature besides elite and court circles, and links it to the strategies of social promotion launched by that dynamic social group. The analysis is based on two types of sources: on the one hand, on an extensive sample of the presence of literary works in the libraries of the medieval Catalan lower middle classes, derived from the main documentary collections on history of the books produced to date; and, on the other hand, on some literary codices copied by individuals belonging to that social sphere, which have been reexamined. In addition, some individuals are identified regarding the transmission of some works of Francesc Eiximenis (Llibre de les dones and Llibre dels àngels) and the Catalan translation of La Queste del saint Graal, as well as regarding the origin of Jaume Conesa's translation of Guido delle Colonne's Historia destructionis Troie.

H... more Structured miscellanea have seldom been considered as purpose- committed knowledge compendiums. However, these medieval text collections feature nothing but the immediate surviving milieu in which their single contents were used, disseminated and created. Focusing on each miscellanea as a whole rather than studying its contents as independent works not only allows for a better understanding of the rationale behind the choice, structure and presentation of those texts, but also sheds new light on their translations' motivation and coexistence with the original sources. In addition, the creation of new genres, dissemination, processes of representation, and knowledge access can be pursued together with implications in specialised vocabulary and interaction between knowledge and its reception. Catalan medical miscellanea, currently being studied and catalogued through Sciència.cat DB <http://www.sciencia.cat/scienciacat-db> ;, offers valuable sources for a case study. Furthermore, this paper offers a classification and discusses additional research lines.

Aquesta hipòtesi, generada des dels estudis lul·lians ara fa deu anys, s'ha pogut verificar en algunes edicions de textos catalans de medicina, sovint indatats, i és fonamental, per tant, per a conèixer el primer període de la vernacularització del saber mèdic, científic i tècnic en català.

The hypothesis of the existence of an early Catalan book scripta, created in the second half of the 13th century to deal with the novelty of using Catalan vernacular for prose book production, allows us to understand the written form of the first books in Catalan. This hypothesis, generated some ten years ago from Lullian studies, has been verified in some editions of Catalan texts on medicine, which are often undated, and therefore it is essential to understanding the first period of the vernacularization of Catalan medical, scientific and technical knowledge.

A new open access digital resource has just been published: MedCat - Corpus Medicorum Catalanorum... more A new open access digital resource has just been published: MedCat - Corpus Medicorum Catalanorum. MedCat is a database that systematizes and classifies a huge quantity of archive documents on the practice of medicine and all the other healthcare professions (relative to both humans and animals), and on the cultural manifestations of health in the territory of the old Crown of Aragon (Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands). Its chronological framework is, first and foremost, the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance (13th-16th centuries), although in future it could be extended to the entire preindustrial age. MedCat is one of the initiatives of the Sciència.cat research group, currently funded by a project of the Spanish Research Agency (Agencia Estatal de Investigación, MICINN), and it is a resource directed by Lluís Cifuentes (University of Barcelona) and Carmel Ferragud (University of Valencia).

Per a qui no hi estigui familiaritzat i els consideri des d'una perspectiva presentista, pot resultar sorprenent, sobretot si es constata que no era estrany que els profans en medicina els tinguessin a les seves biblioteques. A partir d'una anàlisi d'aquestes obres, s'exposen les raons del fet, que cal cercar en un contingut molt més ampli i divers del que es podria pensar i —segurament a l'origen d'això— en uns cirurgians que feien més que de cirurgians tal com s'entenen avui i en una societat que havia de comptar amb l'autoajuda mèdica en un grau elevat.

In the late Middle Ages and the early Modern Age, treatises on surgery became the main objective of the vernacularization of medicine in all Western Europe. Perhaps this may seem surprising for those who are not familiarised with the topic or consider it from a contemporary perspective. In particular, when they realise that even the unexperienced in medicine kept some of these treatises in their libraries. Based on the analysis of these works, some reasons to explain this fact will be provided, which point towards a broader and more diverse content than they might think—and perhaps—towards surgeons that were much more than our modern surgeons. And, finally, also towards a society where medical self-help was highly appreciated.

El receptari mèdic baixmedieval i renaixentista: un gènere vernacle

"The late-medieval and Renaissance medical recipe book: a vernacular genre". — When analysing med... more "The late-medieval and Renaissance medical recipe book: a vernacular genre". — When analysing medieval texts, and modern ones too, we tend to label all collections of recipes as ‘recipe books' (Catalan receptaris). These can be works on medicine, cookery, alchemy or any number of other technical subjects, either in Latin or the vernacular, of varying length ranging from a handful of recipes copied into a miscellany to a full-volume monographic collection. In reality, though, they are works that belong to quite different genres. The ‘recipe book' label, then, does not correspond to a specific genre but rather alludes to the form of these works. Moreover, in modern Catalan, as well as in other languages, a ‘recipe book' is a collection of cookery recipes, but also a technical book for the management of a pharmacy workshop. With the sole exception of this second sense, ‘recipe book' is a term that was not used for these texts at the time they were produced, and which, although it does help to describe its contents to modern readers, nevertheless muddies the waters somewhat when we are trying to understand the development of certain genres which, in some cases, were in their early stages or which do not have modern equivalents. For people of the late Middle Ages, a ‘recipe book' was exclusively a technical manual written and used by apothecaries, a register of the doctors' prescriptions that were prepared and sold in the shop. We are not therefore dealing with a doctrinal work either for publication or for any practical application above and beyond its use in the apothecary's workshop. Furthermore, it appears at a time when the new late-medieval urban society was becoming increasingly medicalised, and was therefore demanding certain guarantees with regard to the practices of doctors and pharmacists. The Receptari de Manresa ['Manresa Recipe Book'] (1347–1348) is, possibly, the only surviving pre-modern witness of this genre, hardly surprising given that these works rarely outlived the apothecaries who compiled them. In pharmacy workshops, these works coexisted with and complemented other written records intended for their management, some of which have inappropriately been called ‘recipe books'. This article, for the first time in the Catalan context, provides a panorama of the full range of these books and documents. Beyond these apothecaries' works —and leaving aside technical crafts, alchemy and cookery— it was medicine, and in particular practical medicine, which was the area that generated most texts in the form of recipe lists and which, by assimilation with the works of apothecaries, we call ‘recipe books'. They were extremely utilitarian works which drew on the tradition of early-medieval monastic collections of recipes and on the works on practical medicine, notably the Thesaurus pauperum ['Treasure of Poor Men'], which were the products of the new university culture, and which had first and foremost a therapeutic aim, and the most extensive examples of which were called ‘books of recipes' or ‘books of medicines'. They were exponents of a discrete genre which began to take shape at that time as a basic medical tool for those outside the university system. To differentiate this type of work from the apothecaries' recipe book, we propose calling them ‘medical recipe book'. Two types are identified: one produced by non-university trained medical practitioners (surgeons and barber-surgeons) as a basic, everyday instrument for their professional practice which we call ‘professional medical recipe book'; and another produced by lay people as a tool that could guarantee medical first aid in the domestic setting, which we call ‘domestic medical recipe book'. In this article we study the origin of this medical genre, establish its general characteristics, and those of the two types,highlight its importance, given the poor regard in which it has often been held through lack of understanding, and we present a catalogue of extant Catalan witnesses and documentary attestations. Our analysis concludes that this genre, although not restricted exclusively to the vernacular, is found predominantly in the vernacular, is an eminently ‘vernacular' genre, not because of the language in which it is written, but because its origins, conception and final use lie outside the university sphere, containing as it does appropriate content not restricted to recipes. From this perspective, the poorly regarded recipe book becomes an invaluable representative of a ‘vernacular medicine', written by or for lay practitioners and people alike, echoing a similar vernacularization in the fields of philosophy and theology.

The digital corpus of Sciència.cat: a work in progress

The research strand regarding the dissemination of science and technology in Catalan during the M... more The research strand regarding the dissemination of science and technology in Catalan during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, initiated by the author in 1993 and continued at the Universitat de Barcelona from 2003 onwards, has embraced the exploitation of ICTs as a tool for the systematization, spreading and transfer of research. In 2006 the Sciència.cat website <http://www.sciencia.cat> was put online so that it might act as the showcase for that strand, and simultaneously as the framework within which the above-stated aims might be put into progressive effect, aims intended to take shape in a digital library and a relational database. The database was designed, constructed and financed in collaboration with the CODITECAM project, and data is being entered thereinto with a view to offering it to the public in early 2012. The contribution made thereby lays bare the origins of the project, as well as its characteristics, current situation and prospects for the future.

Per a il·lustrar-ho, presenta dos casos diferents: per una banda, la coneguda 'Vida' d’Arnau de Hartmann Schedel en una còpia feta a Catalunya per Pere Miquel Carbonell a finals del segle XV inèdita per als arnaldistes; per l’altra, un estat de la qüestió sobre les obres mèdiques arnaldianes o atribuïdes a Arnau que van circular en català. Aquest treball proposa la identificació dels coneixements que interessaven en una explotació agrí... more Aquest treball proposa la identificació dels coneixements que interessaven en una explotació agrícola catalana durant l’Edat Mitjana i inicis del Renaixement i la seva transmissió. En consonància amb les summes d’agronomia antigues i amb les obres renaixentistes d’Herrera o Agustí, es descobreix un ventall ampli de coneixements, més enllà de les tècniques agràries, que tenia en compte la menescalia, la medicina pràctica, la conservació dels aliments, l’astrologia, la meteorologia, etc. El treball se centra en els quatre primers àmbits, en les seves manifestacions en català i en el públic que s’hi interessava, format per propietaris rurals que eren membres de la burgesia, de la noblesa i de l’estament eclesiàstic. Al costat d’una recopilació ordenada de materials coneguts, se n’aporten d’inèdits i es planteja la penetració social dels sabers continguts en aquestes obres.

Ce travail se propose d’identifier les savoirs qui intéressaient une exploitation agricole catalane au Moyen Âge et au début de la Renaissance, et leurs transmissions. En accord avec les traités d’agronomie antiques et les oeuvres modernes d’Herrera ou d’Agustí, on découvre un large éventail de connaissances, au-delà des techniques agraires, qui tenait compte de la maréchalerie, de la médecine pratique, de la conservation des aliments, de l’astrologie, de la météorologie, etc. La recherche est centrée sur les quatre premiers domaines, leurs manifestations en langue catalane et le public qui s’y intéressait, formé de propriétaires ruraux qui étaient membres de la bourgeoisie, de la noblesse et du clergé. Outre une compilation ordonnée des matériaux connus, l’auteur en fournit d’inédits, et soulève la question de la pénétration sociale des savoirs contenus dans ces ouvrages.

Of the medical texts circulating in Catalan in medieval times, two of the most significant were d... more Of the medical texts circulating in Catalan in medieval times, two of the most significant were doubtlessly the surgical treatise by Teodorico Borgognoni (1205-1298) and the regimen sanitatis of Arnau de Vilanova (ca. 1240-1311 ). They are significant both because of the extent to which they spread throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and because of the way they represented their audience. The aim of this paper will be to identify the audience of such medical translations and to uncover the reasons for why they were produced.

This article is the first part of a two-part essay on the sources and reception of the Liber de h... more This article is the first part of a two-part essay on the sources and reception of the Liber de homine (Il Perché) by Girolamo Manfredi, a famous doctor, astrologer and professor of the University of Bologna who died in 1493. Consisting of a regimen sanitatis together with a treatise on physiognomy, the Liber de homine (Il Perché) was composed in 1474 in Italian and intended for a specific audience: the elites of urban society and medical practitioners not trained in universities. Notably, Manfredi was the first author within the problemata genre to use a vernacular language. In both parts of this essay, Manfredi’s treatise will be analysed in the context of the vernacularisation of knowledge and the medicalisation of European society in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This first article will examine its relationship with the ancient genre of Natural Questions, particularly the pseudo-Aristotelian Problemata.

This article, the second part of a two-part essay on the sources and reception of Manfredi’s work... more This article, the second part of a two-part essay on the sources and reception of Manfredi’s work, examines the relationship between the Liber de homine (Il Perché) written by Girolamo Manfredi and the pseudo-Aristotelian Secretum secretorum. It accounts for the success of the Liber de homine (Il Perché) in Italian and Iberian contexts, analysing twenty-six Italian editions produced from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, as well as the only two existing translations, one printed in Catalan (1499) and the other in Spanish (1567, followed by four reprints in the sixteenth century). The existence of the Catalan translation was discovered in 2001 by the authors of this article. The Catalan and Spanish translations do not depend upon each other; moreover, the printed editions exemplify the fifteenth- and sixteenth-century circulation of medical texts in vernacular languages.

The chronicles of James I (c. 1270-1276), Bernat Desclot (c. 1280-1288), Ramon Muntaner (1325-132... more The chronicles of James I (c. 1270-1276), Bernat Desclot (c. 1280-1288), Ramon Muntaner (1325-1328) and Peter the Ceremonious (c. 1345-1385), known as the four great Catalan chronicles, are one of the best sets of historiographic works from mediaeval Europe. Eminent scholars, historians and philologists have studied and published them, and translations in numerous languages have also been issued. Nonetheless, they are still undeservedly unknown outside the circle of experts in Catalan history and literature. In 1971, Ferran Soldevila published a joint edition of all four chronicles with profuse historical annotations, which was recently revised and expanded by the historian Maria Teresa Ferrer i Mallol and the linguist Jordi Bruguera in an edition which currently provides the best access to these works. This article provides a summary of current knowledge of these works from an interdisciplinary perspective, along with a few new insights.

Eminents estudiosos, historiadors i filòlegs les han estudiat i editat i també se n’han publicat traduccions a diverses llengües, però encara són immerescudament poc conegudes més enllà dels especialistes en la història i la literatura catalanes. L’any 1971, Ferran Soldevila va publicar-ne una edició conjunta amb una profusa anotació històrica, que recentment ha estat revisada i ampliada per la historiadora Maria Teresa Ferrer i Mallol i el lingüista Jordi Bruguera en una edició que, a dia d’avui, és la que permet un millor accés a aquestes obres. En aquest treball es presenta una síntesi del coneixement que actualment se’n té des d’una perspectiva interdiscipli-nària, i s’hi fan també algunes aportacions inèdites.

One of the most surprising aspects of the history of surgery in the medieval and early modern per... more One of the most surprising aspects of the history of surgery in the medieval and early modern periods is the intense use of vernacular languages in the dissemination of treatises on the subject, via translations, and even in the writing of originals. This vernacularization of surgery began in the thirteenth century and is closely associated with the creation of a new medical system in the Latin West and with the birth of a rational “new surgery”, linked to Galenism, to school education, and to the transmission of knowledge in books. This article presents a summary of this interrelationship and the role played by the vernacularization of surgery in the success of these processes, and it upholds the need for an interdisciplinary research methodology in order to gain an overall understanding of it.

This article aims to prove the active role played by artisans as consumers (readers, owners, copy... more This article aims to prove the active role played by artisans as consumers (readers, owners, copyists) and authors of literature besides elite and court circles, and links it to the strategies of social promotion launched by that dynamic social group. The analysis is based on two types of sources: on the one hand, on an extensive sample of the presence of literary works in the libraries of the medieval Catalan lower middle classes, derived from the main documentary collections on history of the books produced to date; and, on the other hand, on some literary codices copied by individuals belonging to that social sphere, which have been reexamined. In addition, some individuals are identified regarding the transmission of some works of Francesc Eiximenis (Llibre de les dones and Llibre dels àngels) and the Catalan translation of La Queste del saint Graal, as well as regarding the origin of Jaume Conesa's translation of Guido delle Colonne's Historia destructionis Troie.

H... more Structured miscellanea have seldom been considered as purpose- committed knowledge compendiums. However, these medieval text collections feature nothing but the immediate surviving milieu in which their single contents were used, disseminated and created. Focusing on each miscellanea as a whole rather than studying its contents as independent works not only allows for a better understanding of the rationale behind the choice, structure and presentation of those texts, but also sheds new light on their translations' motivation and coexistence with the original sources. In addition, the creation of new genres, dissemination, processes of representation, and knowledge access can be pursued together with implications in specialised vocabulary and interaction between knowledge and its reception. Catalan medical miscellanea, currently being studied and catalogued through Sciència.cat DB <http://www.sciencia.cat/scienciacat-db> ;, offers valuable sources for a case study. Furthermore, this paper offers a classification and discusses additional research lines.

Aquesta hipòtesi, generada des dels estudis lul·lians ara fa deu anys, s'ha pogut verificar en algunes edicions de textos catalans de medicina, sovint indatats, i és fonamental, per tant, per a conèixer el primer període de la vernacularització del saber mèdic, científic i tècnic en català.

The hypothesis of the existence of an early Catalan book scripta, created in the second half of the 13th century to deal with the novelty of using Catalan vernacular for prose book production, allows us to understand the written form of the first books in Catalan. This hypothesis, generated some ten years ago from Lullian studies, has been verified in some editions of Catalan texts on medicine, which are often undated, and therefore it is essential to understanding the first period of the vernacularization of Catalan medical, scientific and technical knowledge.

A new open access digital resource has just been published: MedCat - Corpus Medicorum Catalanorum... more A new open access digital resource has just been published: MedCat - Corpus Medicorum Catalanorum. MedCat is a database that systematizes and classifies a huge quantity of archive documents on the practice of medicine and all the other healthcare professions (relative to both humans and animals), and on the cultural manifestations of health in the territory of the old Crown of Aragon (Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands). Its chronological framework is, first and foremost, the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance (13th-16th centuries), although in future it could be extended to the entire preindustrial age. MedCat is one of the initiatives of the Sciència.cat research group, currently funded by a project of the Spanish Research Agency (Agencia Estatal de Investigación, MICINN), and it is a resource directed by Lluís Cifuentes (University of Barcelona) and Carmel Ferragud (University of Valencia).

Per a qui no hi estigui familiaritzat i els consideri des d'una perspectiva presentista, pot resultar sorprenent, sobretot si es constata que no era estrany que els profans en medicina els tinguessin a les seves biblioteques. A partir d'una anàlisi d'aquestes obres, s'exposen les raons del fet, que cal cercar en un contingut molt més ampli i divers del que es podria pensar i —segurament a l'origen d'això— en uns cirurgians que feien més que de cirurgians tal com s'entenen avui i en una societat que havia de comptar amb l'autoajuda mèdica en un grau elevat.

In the late Middle Ages and the early Modern Age, treatises on surgery became the main objective of the vernacularization of medicine in all Western Europe. Perhaps this may seem surprising for those who are not familiarised with the topic or consider it from a contemporary perspective. In particular, when they realise that even the unexperienced in medicine kept some of these treatises in their libraries. Based on the analysis of these works, some reasons to explain this fact will be provided, which point towards a broader and more diverse content than they might think—and perhaps—towards surgeons that were much more than our modern surgeons. And, finally, also towards a society where medical self-help was highly appreciated.

"The late-medieval and Renaissance medical recipe book: a vernacular genre". — When analysing med... more "The late-medieval and Renaissance medical recipe book: a vernacular genre". — When analysing medieval texts, and modern ones too, we tend to label all collections of recipes as ‘recipe books' (Catalan receptaris). These can be works on medicine, cookery, alchemy or any number of other technical subjects, either in Latin or the vernacular, of varying length ranging from a handful of recipes copied into a miscellany to a full-volume monographic collection. In reality, though, they are works that belong to quite different genres. The ‘recipe book' label, then, does not correspond to a specific genre but rather alludes to the form of these works. Moreover, in modern Catalan, as well as in other languages, a ‘recipe book' is a collection of cookery recipes, but also a technical book for the management of a pharmacy workshop. With the sole exception of this second sense, ‘recipe book' is a term that was not used for these texts at the time they were produced, and which, although it does help to describe its contents to modern readers, nevertheless muddies the waters somewhat when we are trying to understand the development of certain genres which, in some cases, were in their early stages or which do not have modern equivalents. For people of the late Middle Ages, a ‘recipe book' was exclusively a technical manual written and used by apothecaries, a register of the doctors' prescriptions that were prepared and sold in the shop. We are not therefore dealing with a doctrinal work either for publication or for any practical application above and beyond its use in the apothecary's workshop. Furthermore, it appears at a time when the new late-medieval urban society was becoming increasingly medicalised, and was therefore demanding certain guarantees with regard to the practices of doctors and pharmacists. The Receptari de Manresa ['Manresa Recipe Book'] (1347–1348) is, possibly, the only surviving pre-modern witness of this genre, hardly surprising given that these works rarely outlived the apothecaries who compiled them. In pharmacy workshops, these works coexisted with and complemented other written records intended for their management, some of which have inappropriately been called ‘recipe books'. This article, for the first time in the Catalan context, provides a panorama of the full range of these books and documents. Beyond these apothecaries' works —and leaving aside technical crafts, alchemy and cookery— it was medicine, and in particular practical medicine, which was the area that generated most texts in the form of recipe lists and which, by assimilation with the works of apothecaries, we call ‘recipe books'. They were extremely utilitarian works which drew on the tradition of early-medieval monastic collections of recipes and on the works on practical medicine, notably the Thesaurus pauperum ['Treasure of Poor Men'], which were the products of the new university culture, and which had first and foremost a therapeutic aim, and the most extensive examples of which were called ‘books of recipes' or ‘books of medicines'. They were exponents of a discrete genre which began to take shape at that time as a basic medical tool for those outside the university system. To differentiate this type of work from the apothecaries' recipe book, we propose calling them ‘medical recipe book'. Two types are identified: one produced by non-university trained medical practitioners (surgeons and barber-surgeons) as a basic, everyday instrument for their professional practice which we call ‘professional medical recipe book'; and another produced by lay people as a tool that could guarantee medical first aid in the domestic setting, which we call ‘domestic medical recipe book'. In this article we study the origin of this medical genre, establish its general characteristics, and those of the two types,highlight its importance, given the poor regard in which it has often been held through lack of understanding, and we present a catalogue of extant Catalan witnesses and documentary attestations. Our analysis concludes that this genre, although not restricted exclusively to the vernacular, is found predominantly in the vernacular, is an eminently ‘vernacular' genre, not because of the language in which it is written, but because its origins, conception and final use lie outside the university sphere, containing as it does appropriate content not restricted to recipes. From this perspective, the poorly regarded recipe book becomes an invaluable representative of a ‘vernacular medicine', written by or for lay practitioners and people alike, echoing a similar vernacularization in the fields of philosophy and theology.

The digital corpus of Sciència.cat: a work in progress

The research strand regarding the dissemination of science and technology in Catalan during the M... more The research strand regarding the dissemination of science and technology in Catalan during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, initiated by the author in 1993 and continued at the Universitat de Barcelona from 2003 onwards, has embraced the exploitation of ICTs as a tool for the systematization, spreading and transfer of research. In 2006 the Sciència.cat website <http://www.sciencia.cat> was put online so that it might act as the showcase for that strand, and simultaneously as the framework within which the above-stated aims might be put into progressive effect, aims intended to take shape in a digital library and a relational database. The database was designed, constructed and financed in collaboration with the CODITECAM project, and data is being entered thereinto with a view to offering it to the public in early 2012. The contribution made thereby lays bare the origins of the project, as well as its characteristics, current situation and prospects for the future.

Per a il·lustrar-ho, presenta dos casos diferents: per una banda, la coneguda 'Vida' d’Arnau de Hartmann Schedel en una còpia feta a Catalunya per Pere Miquel Carbonell a finals del segle XV inèdita per als arnaldistes; per l’altra, un estat de la qüestió sobre les obres mèdiques arnaldianes o atribuïdes a Arnau que van circular en català. Aquest treball proposa la identificació dels coneixements que interessaven en una explotació agrí... more Aquest treball proposa la identificació dels coneixements que interessaven en una explotació agrícola catalana durant l’Edat Mitjana i inicis del Renaixement i la seva transmissió. En consonància amb les summes d’agronomia antigues i amb les obres renaixentistes d’Herrera o Agustí, es descobreix un ventall ampli de coneixements, més enllà de les tècniques agràries, que tenia en compte la menescalia, la medicina pràctica, la conservació dels aliments, l’astrologia, la meteorologia, etc. El treball se centra en els quatre primers àmbits, en les seves manifestacions en català i en el públic que s’hi interessava, format per propietaris rurals que eren membres de la burgesia, de la noblesa i de l’estament eclesiàstic. Al costat d’una recopilació ordenada de materials coneguts, se n’aporten d’inèdits i es planteja la penetració social dels sabers continguts en aquestes obres.

Ce travail se propose d’identifier les savoirs qui intéressaient une exploitation agricole catalane au Moyen Âge et au début de la Renaissance, et leurs transmissions. En accord avec les traités d’agronomie antiques et les oeuvres modernes d’Herrera ou d’Agustí, on découvre un large éventail de connaissances, au-delà des techniques agraires, qui tenait compte de la maréchalerie, de la médecine pratique, de la conservation des aliments, de l’astrologie, de la météorologie, etc. La recherche est centrée sur les quatre premiers domaines, leurs manifestations en langue catalane et le public qui s’y intéressait, formé de propriétaires ruraux qui étaient membres de la bourgeoisie, de la noblesse et du clergé. Outre une compilation ordonnée des matériaux connus, l’auteur en fournit d’inédits, et soulève la question de la pénétration sociale des savoirs contenus dans ces ouvrages.

They are significant both because of the extent to which they spread throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and because of the way they represented their audience. The aim of this paper will be to identify the audience of such medical translations and to uncover the reasons for why they were produced.

This article is the first part of a two-part essay on the sources and reception of the Liber de h... more This article is the first part of a two-part essay on the sources and reception of the Liber de homine (Il Perché) by Girolamo Manfredi, a famous doctor, astrologer and professor of the University of Bologna who died in 1493. Consisting of a regimen sanitatis together with a treatise on physiognomy, the Liber de homine (Il Perché) was composed in 1474 in Italian and intended for a specific audience: the elites of urban society and medical practitioners not trained in universities. Notably, Manfredi was the first author within the problemata genre to use a vernacular language. In both parts of this essay, Manfredi’s treatise will be analysed in the context of the vernacularisation of knowledge and the medicalisation of European society in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This first article will examine its relationship with the ancient genre of Natural Questions, particularly the pseudo-Aristotelian Problemata.

El receptari mèdic és un antic gènere extrauniversitari de gran interès per estudiar les necessit... more El receptari mèdic és un antic gènere extrauniversitari de gran interès per estudiar les necessitats sanitàries més bàsiques de la població i de quina manera eren cobertes en el període que va des de la creació del sistema mèdic vigent, a finals del segle XIII, fins a la força recent generalització de l'assistència sanitària. S'hi han distingit dues variants, una de “professional” i una altra de “domèstica”. Els de la primera variant eren vademècums pràctics dels metges extrauniversitaris, els més nombrosos i accessibles per a la majoria de la població. Són una finestra excel·lent per conèixer quines eren les seves necessitats terapèutiques immediates i com les gestionaven. D'altra banda, els de la variant “domèstica” eren guies per a l'autoajuda individual i familiar que permeten saber quines eren les necessitats sanitàries de l'espai domèstic i com s'hi feia front. El receptari del sabadellenc Joan Martina, de 1439, és un bon exemple d'aquests últims, aparentment modest però important, perquè demostra que la creació i la consolidació del nou sistema mèdic no van ser cosa només de les grans ciutats i de les seves elits socials, intel·lectuals i de govern. En aquest volum es reimprimeix l'edició d'aquest receptari que va fer Josep Perarnau el 1992 i un estudi del gènere publicat per Lluís Cifuentes en l'any 2016. L'obra és important per ser tan primerenca (l'original d'aquesta còpia potser és de finals del segle XIII) i per a entendre l'elaboració autòctona de manuals de menescalia en català, adaptats a les necessitats dels usuaris de les cavalleries del país. L'edició s'acompanya d'un estudi codicològic, historicocultural i lingüístic, i d'un índex del vocabulari tècnic.

Els inicis de l’ús del català com a llengua de comunicació científica i tècnica en el món del llibre manuscrit i el de la primera impremta, amb una demanda social important entre finals del segle XIII i principis del segle XVI, són analitzats en el context de diferents processos esdevinguts a l’occident europeu del moment: per una banda, l’empenta dels laics per accedir al saber, interessats especialment per la filosofia i les ciències, però molt en particular per tot el que es relacionava amb la salut i la natura, i amb una decidida opció per les llengües vernaculars; i per l’altra, l’èxit d’un nou sistema de creació i difusió del coneixement, fonamentat en la institució universitària, el qual es continuava expressant en llatí, però que havia d’incorporar una gran massa de pràctics desconeixedors de la llengua acadèmica. Aquest llibre ofereix, per primera vegada, un recorregut complet per les realitzacions en català pertanyents a totes les àrees del que avui anomenem ciència (medicina humana i veterinària, ciències naturals, astronomia, geografia, agronomia, aritmètica, etc.), i n’incorpora d’altres de relacionades que a l’època tenien una consideració ben diferent de l’actual (astrologia, alquímia, màgia, endevinació). Aquesta segona edició revisada i ampliada n’actualitza els continguts amb noves dades i nous textos, i amb la bibliografia més recent.

Este libro presenta la edición del texto original en catalán y la traducción castellana del manua... more Este libro presenta la edición del texto original en catalán y la traducción castellana del manual de tintorería de Joanot Valero, un artesano del tinte oriundo de Sarrión (localidad del sur de Aragón cercana a la frontera del antiguo reino de Valencia). El manual es un recetario para la tintura de paños de lana, con más de un centenar de fórmulas para la aplicación del tinte y los quitamanchas, y para el tratamiento de posibles incidencias en la salud de los artesanos. Presenta puntos en común con los manuales de tintorería de la Italia bajomedieval, pero tiene una naturaleza más práctica, ya que el autor recopiló las recetas para su propio uso. Se trata de un ejemplo excepcional de la denominada Fachliteratur (literatura técnica de los oficios) en el marco ibérico medieval y renacentista, y más concretamente en el ámbito catalán, en el que constituye un testimonio único en su género y época.

This book presents the edited original Catalan text of Joanot Valero's manual of dyeing together with its Spanish translation. Valero was a craftsman native to Sarrión (a town in Aragon near the southern border with the ancient kingdom of Valencia). The manual is a recipe book for the dyeing of woollen cloth, with over a hundred formulas for the application of dyes and cleaning fluids, and treatment of the effects on the health of the artisans. It shares points in common with the manuals of late medieval Italy dyers, but takes a more practical approach, since the author compiled the recipes for his own use. This is an outstanding example of the so-called Fachliteratur (technical literature on craft trades) from medieval and Renaissance Iberia, and particularly Catalonia, which is a unique testimony of its type and age.

Estudi i edició crítica de l'únic fragment conservat de la traducció catalana del "Lilium medicin... more Estudi i edició crítica de l'únic fragment conservat de la traducció catalana del "Lilium medicine" (1303-1305) de Bernat de Gordon, una de les obres fonamentals en la instrucció dels metges de la Baixa Edat Mitjana, que ens ha arribat en una cinquantena de manuscrits llatins (i onze edicions impreses dels segles XV al XVII) i traduïda a diverses llengües vernacles. El fragment de la traducció catalana, que parteix de l'original llatí, conté la part final del llibre VII i, per tant, de l'obra: l'antidotari sencer (capítols 21-25) i un capítol anterior (el 20). El testimoni català forma part d'una miscel·lània mèdica d'un barber-cirurgià de Barcelona datada l'any 1435 i més tard adquirida als encants per Hernando Colón (Sevilla, Biblioteca Colombina, ms. 7-4-27). La presència de les vacil·lacions d'estil i de grafia pròpies de la 'scripta' librària catalana primitiva permet datar la traducció a començaments del segle XIV, de manera que s'inscriuria en la primera etapa el procés de traducció al català d'escrits mèdics i filosoficonaturals que va tenir lloc a la Corona d'Aragó en el tombant del segle XIII al XIV, coincidint amb el regnat de Jaume II (1291-1327). S'hauria produït, per tant, en el mateix període que es van traduir obres tan destacades com la "Chirurgia" de Teodoric de Borgognoni (1302-1304 i 1311), el "Regimen sanitatis" d'Arnau de Vilanova (1305-1310), la "Chirurgia parva" de Lanfranc de Milà (1329), els "Aforismes" d'Hipòcrates, el "Dragmaticon philosophie" de Guillem de Conches, el "Canon" d'Avicenna, el "Secretum secretorum" pseudoaristotèlic o el "Thesaurus pauperum". L'anàlisi de la traducció castellana del "Lilium", impresa a Sevilla el 1495, permet demostrar que la traducció catalana i la castellana són independents. En l'estudi també es compara la traducció catalana amb la francesa.

ATCA, per la seva banda, fou sempre sensible a la successiva aparició dels volums de la seva obra principal, les «Arnaldi de Villanova Opera Medica Omnia», les noces d'argent de les quals havíem celebrat cinc mesos abans, el maig del 2000; fou la seva darrera intervenció pública entre nosaltres; deixem, en primer lloc, constància d'aquell acte, que té tota la significació d'un testament, i després recordarem la seva vida. MedCat posa a l’abast de la recerca un corpus documental per a l’estudi de la història social i c... more MedCat posa a l’abast de la recerca un corpus documental per a l’estudi de la història social i cultural de la medicina i de la salut (humana i animal) d’un abast i una importància extraordinaris. L’estructura social i administrativa de l’antiga Corona d’Aragó (Aragó, Catalunya, València, Balears i altres territoris mediterranis), vigent entre els segles XII i XVIII, va originar un volum documental d’una magnitud que, malgrat les pèrdues i destruccions, admet poques comparacions a l’Occident europeu. Des de la florida dels estudis històrics i filològics al segle XIX, aquest patrimoni ha estat objecte de tot de recerques individuals més o menys sistemàtiques, que han aconseguit exhumar una quantitat ingent de documents, encara majoritàriament inèdits. MedCat promou les sinergies necessàries per a assegurar que aquest gran corpus documental no es perdi o quedi fora de l’abast de la recerca, gràcies a les possibilitats de classificació i difusió que ofereixen les Humanitats digitals. Amb MedCat, l’investigador té al seu abast un instrument incomparable que posa en relleu la recerca efectuada durant molts anys a l'àmbit catalanoaragonès; un material de gran qualitat, que promourà nous projectes de recerca, nacionals i internacionals. És una iniciativa de finançament públic que es presenta en accés obert. ---------- MedCat makes a documentary corpus, extraordinary in its scope and importance, available to research, for the study of the social and cultural history of (human and animal) medicine and health care. From the twelfth to the eighteenth centuries, the social and administrative structure of the old Crown of Aragon (Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and other Mediterranean territories) generated an enormous volume of documents that, despite loss and destruction, has few equals in Western Europe. Ever since the study of history and philology flourished in the nineteenth century, this heritage has been the object of all manner of individual research work, more or less systematic, which has succeeded in bringing to light a huge volume of documents, most of them still unpublished. MedCat, a publicly funded open access initiative, enables the synergies necessary to ensure that this great corpus of documents is neither lost nor remains unavailable to research, thanks to the possibilities for classification and dissemination offered by the digital Humanities. With MedCat, researchers have to hand an incomparable tool that highlights the research done for many years in Catalan-Aragonese territory, material of superb quality that will stimulate new national and international research projects.
