Giancarlo Franzese
Giancarlo Franzese leads since 2003 a research group on Statistical Physics of Complex Matter at the University of Barcelona (UB) investigating complex liquids and the role of water in nanoscopic and biological systems with theoretical calculations and numerical simulations, in collaboration with experimental groups.
After a PhD in Physics with honors (Univ. of Naples 1998), he was Associate Researcher in leading institutions (e.g., Boston Univ. Center for Polymer Studies and Center for Statistical Mechanics and Complexity of La Sapienza Univ. Rome), Visiting Scientist at many international centers (e.g., Univ. of Cambridge, Univ. College Dublin Centre for BioNano Interactions, Univ. of Beijing International Center for Quantum Materials), since 2008 Tenured Professor at UB and since 2014 accredited as Full Professor by the Catalan University Quality Agency (AQU).
He was PI in European, Spanish and Catalan projects, with cumulative funds for more than 2 millions €. He organized 16 international conferences and chaired 8 in the last 9 years (6 since 2011).
Honored with the Young CNR Research Fellow Abroad prize 2000, he received the UB Incentive Program for the Enhancement of Research Activity prize 2012 and The Royal Society of Chemistry-UK selection as Emerging investigator in Soft Matter 2012.
He ranks within the Top 1% of UB faculty members for research, the Top 10 Scientists in Spain in Physics, Fluid & Plasmas [1], the Top Scientists in Spain in Mathematical Physics [1] and in Multidisciplinary Physics [1], the Top Italian Scientists in the World in any scientific field [2].
Since 2014 he is member of the International Advisory Board of the European Molecular Liquids Group.
He made 82 peer-reviewed publications (6 book chapters and 76 scientific papers publishing on high-impact journals, e.g., Nature, PNAS, PRL y Sci. Rep. of Nature Publishing Group), with more than 3000 citations, H=32 [2], with 3 of his papers listed among the Highly Cited Papers in Physics, and 2 in the Core Papers in Liquid-Liquid Phase Transition ... Supercooled Water of the last years [3]. He edited “Aspects of Physical Biology”, Springer 2008.
He gave 147 talks, 97 of which Invited, at international conferences and research institutions.
He received interviews on radio and international press and wrote scientific dissemination papers (e.g., for the Spanish edition of Scientific American-Nature Publishing Group, find more at http://www.ffn.ub.es/gfranzese/Impact.html).
He is editor of three international journals and referee for 33 of them (e.g., PNAS, PlosOne, PRL, Sci. Rep.) and 12 international research agencies (e.g., NSF-USA, EPSRC-UK, SNSF-CH and NRF-SG).
Coordinator of the Condensed Matter line of the PhD in Physics, Professor of the Master of Advanced Physics and in the Master of Computational Science, Professor of Physics and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, he supervised 7 Master theses and 13 PhD theses.
