Social and Cultural Anthropology

The main purpose of this research is to depict the difficulties that young women may encounter in their attempt to get access to top positions in the labor hierarchy considering not just the organizational aspects but also the informal dynamics associated with cultural representations of gender roles in management positions. A series of deep-interviews with young career women reveal the complexity of the paths that these women have chosen and the concessions they were forced to make, in order to continue with the organizational norms or bypass them. Finally this paper will challenge the contemporary assumptions of the celebratory discourse about " successful women " by illustrating the context of how (mis)conceptions of educational achievement are easily assimilated into individualizing neoliberal discourses of meritocracy and gender equality.

Las mujeres en distintas circunstancias y diferentes sociedades muestran una inmensa divergencia en sus experiencias y en su relación con los hombres. El cómo se produce la subordinación, en qué grado, en qué áreas de la vida y con qué efectos; pueden diferir sustancialmente dependiendo del contexto del que se trate. Sin embargo, es innegable que la mayor parte de las experiencias de vida tanto del hombre y de la mujer vienen determinadas por la “naturaleza” de sus relaciones desiguales. En este espacio la autora aborda una desigualdad en particular, que en muchos casos pasa desapercibida: el acoso sexual callejero.

Faber va organitzar una primera residència dedicada a feminismes durant els mesos d’octubre i novembre de 2017. Hi van venir professionals, investigadores, docents, artistes i científiques d’arreu del món per a desenvolupar i compartir els seus projectes de treball. Contents de l’èxit que va tenir la convocatòria han decidit repetir aquest període ara amb el subtítol “Dona i ciència”.

Esta entrada tiene como finalidad ilustrar un problema general que persiste aún en muchas sociedades: creer que unx puede estar exento de la dominación masculina. Muchxs de nosotrxs juraría a mano alzada que no es machista y que nunca ha ejercido violencia de género contra otrxs, pero el asunto no es tan sencillo, y va más allá del simple hecho de “querer” participar o no él.

Últimamente somos testigos de que una parte de la sociedad cada día está menos dispuesta a tolerar actos misóginos por muy dicharacheros que estos sean. Ante las desventuradas declaraciones por parte de un cantante mexicano del género regional, usuarixs de redes sociales mostraron su desagrado ante expresiones que consideraban sexistas. Sin embargo en el inter(sic) las respuestas reproducían una idea clara: el machismo es cosa de pobres.

Si bien es cierto que hoy en día en muchos países occidentales, se han ido estableciendo condiciones estructurales favorables para que un mayor número de mujeres tengan acceso todos los niveles educativos, ingresen al mercado de trabajo y asciendan en la jerarquía laboral, las relaciones tradicionales de género dentro de las estructuras sociales, especialmente dentro de las relaciones familiares, aún constituyen un serio impedimento para el desarrollo (laboral y personal) de las mujeres.

RESUMEN: El artículo indaga las diversas formas en que se (re)configuran la percepción y prácticas de roles de género a partir del análisis cualitativo de las relaciones doméstico-familiares de mujeres jóvenes de clase trabaja-dora en la periferia de la ciudad de Puebla (México). A partir del trabajo etnográfico y entrevistas en profundidad observamos cómo la particular estructuración de un grupo doméstico-familiar y la interacción con la comunidad se encuentran construidas alrededor de relaciones sociales marcadas por expectativas de género. Así las adolescentes, construyen un paradójico sentido de agencia individual sobre lo que ellas consideran sus talentos personales al mismo tiempo que desarrollan un fuerte sentimiento de anhelo en formar una pareja y consolidarse en el mercado matrimonial. Nos proponemos ofrecer una perspectiva etnográfica acerca de la constitución de las lógicas socioculturales contemporáneas de las relaciones de género en México y las maneras en que grupos determinados acatan o repelen estas lógicas dentro de su vida cotidiana.
ABSTRACT: This article aims to analyse the different ways in which the perception and practices of gender roles are (re) configured based on the qualitative analysis of the domestic-family relationships of a group of young working-class women in the periphery of the city of Puebla (Mexico). From ethnographic work and in-depth interviews we observed how the particular structuring of a family group as well as the interaction within their community is built around social relationships marked by gender expectations. Thus, adolescents build a paradoxical sense of individual agency on what they consider their best personal assets. At the same time they develop a strong desire of conforming a couple and to consolidate themselves in the marriage market. Our observations offer an ethnographic perspective on the constitution of the contemporary sociocultural logics of gender relations in Mexico and the ways in which determined groups abide or reject these logics within their daily lives.

As a part of the Faber Residence dedicated to Feminisms (II) I have the pleasure to give a one-hour talk about my research for nursing students. I described the research of menstruation in the context of the current Mexican society. I introduced them in the way on how design the collection of quantitative data by means of an online survey with the aim to explore menstruation in everyday life based on socio-demographic variables and socioeconomic status. Subsequently I explain the qualitative part of my analysis which is based on the use of Solicited Diaries for Qualitative Research and In-depth Interviews. Finally, I argued about the advantages of the use of a mix methodology to achieve a comprehensive descriptive study of the contemporary perceptions and attitudes about menstruation in Mexican women and, with this, an understanding of the differences and similarities in menstrual-related beliefs among women of diverse backgrounds.

The focus of this residency is the result of a previous Faber residency program in October 2018. The theme of this initial residency was broadly related to feminism and brought together 12 women from across the world (Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Catalonia, Columbia, Finland, Iran, Mexico, Spain, and the United States) recognized as academics and/or activists in their respective fields/areas.

Presentation of my PhD Thesis "Emergence and construction of professional young women and their areas of (re)production: A comparative study Puebla-Barcelona”. The thesis contributes to the fundamental debates around the division of labor, the reproduction of class relations, and the construction and recreation of gender roles in labor and professional relations. This analysis offers a complex reflection on cultural and social construction of what we refer to as" the work trajectory” analyzing in depth the weight of it as a fundamental feature in the multiple and dynamic identity construction of professional women in our contemporary society. The thesis provides a unique yet thorough approach to the understanding of paid work as a source of "autonomy", placing particular emphasis on the weight of time and space in the construction of such autonomy and the inference of the contributions of women in their immediate circles and on the society in which they live.

(ENG) Bring down the Fraternal Love!
At this point, I do not know who is surprised by the response of President Andrés Manuel López about the increase of the calls related to violence against women during the confinement due COVID-19. The President throughout his term (and even prior to this) has shown a clear reluctance to address public health issues related to gender violence and what is worse, he keeps insisting on playing down the problem while he continues with his ill-defined policy of "moral renewal". The conference on May 6, where he made a call to keep “cultivating fraternal love within families as the key to reducing violence against women”, showed us -again- his failure to tackle the femicide emergency in Mexico and that his responses to the crisis are more of the same.
(SPN) ¡Abajo el Amor Fraternal!
A estas alturas no sé quién sorprende la respuesta del presidente Andrés Manuel López sobre el aumento de las llamadas relacionadas con la violencia contra las mujeres durante el encierro. El presidente a lo largo de su mandato (e incluso antes de este) ha mostrado una clara reticencia a abordar los problemas de salud pública relacionados con la violencia de género y, lo que es peor, sigue insistiendo en minimizar el problema mientras continúa con su política  "renovación moral ". La conferencia del 6 de mayo, donde llamó a "cultivar el amor fraterno dentro de las familias como la clave para reducir la violencia contra las mujeres", nos muestra, nuevamente, su fracaso para abordar la emergencia de feminicidios en México y que sus respuestas a la crisis son más lo mismo.

In recent years, the discussion about the questioning and theorizing of gender relations has arisen in Mexico. This turn has meant the scrutiny of the implications of a sexual division of labor that assigns the primary responsibility for raising children to women. This questioning has also brought to light the unequal participation of mothers and fathers in family life, particularly with regards to their participation in domestic work, fathers contribution to child care, the managing of work-family balance, and gender equality.
The emergence of the so-called new forms of fatherhood is still quite modest in Mexico, and although we can trace a greater participation of men in care and upbringing tasks, this participation is limited in time, form, and content. Care is more than a verb. Caring is an essential part for the world to keep going, and we have to be realistic and acknowledge that men -as collective- lack the understanding of what does it mean to care and, they have less idea of how to organize it.

Puede parecer intrascendente pero las transformaciones de estas mujeres “invisibles”, “parias” o “indeseables” responden al imaginario popular de las expectativas de belleza en las mujeres, que con más o menos variación, este régimen de regulación femenina se centra en un ideal de belleza universal y homogeneizado que encapsula el dominio de una estética de belleza occidental representada en las innumerables variaciones de la belleza femenina blanca idealizada. Esta idealización de la belleza, no es tan inofensiva como se piensa. Las narrativas nos dejan ver que las mujeres sólo pueden estar empoderadas por medio de la sexualización y la objetivación pero además, que sus cuerpos deben de cambiar en orden de poder atraer y complacer a los hombres.
