Tshepho Mosweu is a Senior lecturer at the Department of library and Information studies at the University of Botswana where she teaches courses related to archives and records management and knowledge management. Her professional activities include working with the InterPARES Trust 4 Africa Team, most recently InterPARES Trust AI and the ICA Digital Curation programme. She also serves as the deputy editor of the Journal of the South African Society of Archivists. She has published academic papers in peer reviewed journals and book chapters on electronic records, liquid communication, Cloud- Computing , research methods and oral history. Dr Mosweu is the co-editor of the book Cases on Electronic Record Management in the ESARBICA Region published in 2020 by IGI Global.

Archival institutions worldwide face the challenge of collection deterioration through the handli... more Archival institutions worldwide face the challenge of collection deterioration through the handling and use of archives, inadequate or lack of records management standards and noncompliance with archival legislations. This study aimed at assessing the handling practices and use of archival collections in Botswana. The study adopted the pragmatist paradigm and consequently used questionnaires, interviews, and observations to collect data. The study sample consisted of sixteen (16) Botswana National Archives and Records Services (BNARS) staff purposively selected for interview and 297 BNARS users randomly selected to complete the questionnaire. The findings revealed that, although the staff of the surveyed institution demonstrated reasonable commitment to collection care or preservation of archives, BNARS does not consistently respond to proper collection care and compliance programme.Furthermore, the study revealed inappropriate handling and use of archives practices, lack of training in preservation, inadequate supervision of the study area, and failure to enforce compliance to archives legislations contribute to archives collection deterioration. The study recommended the development of guidelines on good handling practices, preservation policy, handling manual, compliance programme, among others.

This chapter discusses the use of social media platforms for increased access and visibility by t... more This chapter discusses the use of social media platforms for increased access and visibility by the Botswana National Archives and Records Services (BNARS). A qualitative research approach is used to illuminate efforts to use social media for marketing archival services by BNARS, and to closely analyze the benefits and challenges embedded in the use of social media for marketing and outreach by archival institutions. This chapter also draws inferences from the study and proffers recommendations. Primary data was collected through interviews of archivists who manage BNARS social media pages while secondary data was derived from documentary and content analysis. The study reveals that while BNARS was visible to users and potential users online, the legal and policy framework was found to be lacking. Challenges associated with the use of social media pertained to issues of privacy, security, data management as well as policy and the legal framework. The chapter adds literature on advocacy, promotion, and public programming by archival institutions in the digital era.
