BACKGROUND Lasers are a commonly employed method of tattoo removal; however, numerous treatments are often needed and laser treatment may fail to eliminate the tattoo completely. It has been shown in animal studies that topical application of imiquimod cream, alone, fades tattoos. It is suspected that the combination of both imiquimod and laser treatment will result in enhanced tattoo pigment clearance. OBJECTIVE The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of topical imiquimod cream as an adjuvant to laser removal of mature tattoos. METHODS Fourteen albino guinea pigs were tattooed with black ink, then randomly assigned into two groups: one underwent sequential laser treatments with a Q-switched alexandrite laser in conjunction with triweekly applications of 5% imiquimod cream, while the other group underwent laser therapy alone. Subjects were evaluated with clinical photographs and skin biopsies after six laser treatment sessions. RESULTS The combination laser and imiquimod treated group was clinically and histologically rated as having less pigment than the tattoos that were treated with laser alone (p = .012 and p = .047, respectively). Adjuvant imiquimod treatment had greater inflammation (p = .002) and fibrosis (p = .002) on posttreatment skin biopsies. CONCLUSION Imiquimod appears to be a useful adjuvant to experimental laser tattoo removal in guinea pigs. The imiquimod 5% cream used in this study was provided by 3 M Pharmaceuticals (St. Paul, MN).

Biological control of nematodes is a valuable alternative to the use of chemical nematicides in agriculture, because of the high negative impact generated by such chemicals in agroecosystems. From the Gram positive bacterium Tsukamurella paurometabola C-924, the bionematicide HeberNem-L™ has been developed, which is presented as a liquid formulation; nevertheless its stability is still low at 4 °C, with a shelf-life time of 6 months. One way to improve the stability of this bioproduct could be the desiccation of the cells, keeping the viability upon rehydration. Considering this aspect, the aim of our work was to obtain anhydrobiotic cells of the strain C-924 using freeze-drying and spraydrying technologies. One of the main results was the obtaining of anhydrobiotic cells of T. paurometabola C-924, with survival rates higher than 60%. In addition, it was shown that anhydrobiotic cells are more stable vacuum-stored at 4 °C, the rehydrated cells having nematicidal activity in field trials; therefore the powder formulation constitutes a good bionematocide candidate for agricultural use. Furthermore, a new methodology and also a mathematical model were developed to evaluate and predict the stability of desiccated bacterial cells.

Preparation, spectroscopic characterization and electrochemical behavior are reported for the six-coordinate monooxo Mo(VI) complexes, MoOL(cat), where L 2 − =2,2%-thiobis(4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenolate) or 2,2%-thiobis(4,6-di-tert-butylphenolate) and cat 2 − =catecholate (Cat 2 −), 4-methylcatecholate (Mecat 2 −), 4-nitrocatecholate (NO 2 cat 2 −), or 3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate (DTBcat 2 −). The compounds are prepared by reaction of catechol with Mo 2 O 3 L 2 , the m-oxo Mo(V) dimer produced by reaction of MoO 2 (acac) 2 with H 2 L. MoOL(cat) complexes exhibit a Mo O stretching vibration (w Mo O) at 949-961 cm − 1 and a reversible Mo(VI/V) reduction at − 0.3 to −0.6 V versus Fc +/0. These features are characteristic of a mononuclear MoO 4 + center. The kinetics of the metal-centered electrode reaction is sensitive to the catechol substituent. Under identical experimental conditions, the apparent electron-transfer rate indicated by the voltammetric peak potential separation (DE p) increases in the following sequence: DTBcat 2 − BMecat 2 − BCat 2 − BNO 2 cat 2 −. The complexes also exhibit ligand-centered oxidations that range from reversible one-electron behavior in the case of MoOL(DTBcat) to an irreversible multielectron event in the case of MoOL(Cat).

Aim: The major objective of this study was the development of a methodology to quantify the anhydrobiotic ability of bacteria and its application to evaluate the stability of desiccated bacterial cells using the biocontrol agent Tsukamurella paurometabola C-924 as a model of anhydrobiote. Methods and Results: Tsukamurella paurometabola C-924 was desiccated by spray-drying. Samples of desiccated cells were stored at several temperatures and viability and residual moisture were measured at different intervals of time. The term anhydrobiosis quotient (e) was defined, and a scale of anhydrobiotic ability for classifying microorganisms in terms of tolerance to desiccation was established (1 £ e £ 15). The anhydrobiosis quotient was used to evaluate the stability of the anhydrobiotic cells. As a main result, changes in the anhydrobiosis quotient at several temperatures were fitted using a reparameterized Weibull model, which was found to be robust for the prediction of the stability at 4°C. Conclusions: A novel methodology was developed to evaluate the desiccated state in bacteria. The anhydrobiosis quotient allows the quantitative estimation of the anhydrobiotic ability, and the mathematical model developed allows the prediction of the desiccated state of bacterial populations. Significance and Impact of the Study: The new methodology could be applied in studying the anhydrobiosis state of bacterial populations as a predictive tool for industrial and environmental microbiology.

Tsukamurella paurometabola C-924 is a microorganism with proven nematicidal activity which has been used for the successful development of liquid and powdered formulations to be employed under greenhouse conditions. However, the current powdered formulation, although stable at 4 °C, needs to be improved in order to extend its shelf life at room temperature. This can be attained by methodologies such as the encapsulation of the microorganism into agents with high glass transition temperatures (e.g. starch, with a Tg of 50-60 °C at residual humidity values up to 15%). In this work we report for the first time the encapsulation of T. paurometabola C-924 into starch by spray-drying, as well as the results of accelerated stability studies on the resulting formulation. The procedure described here yielded desiccated C-924 cells with a high survival rate (over 60%). Although increasing the concentration of starch up to 10% (w/w) did not significantly influence the survival rate during the procedure, the evaluation of the stability of the resulting formulations at 26 °C revealed a 1.56-fold enhancement as compared to unencapsulated controls.

El objetivo del presente artículo es recorrer los principales autores, textos, interpretaciones y lecturas que conformaron el mito de Pandora desde la Antigüedad hasta su recepción en los siglos XVI y XVII, en especial entre los literatos del siglo de Oro español (Gracián y Calderón). Mostramos cómo el hipotexto hesiódico del relato ha sido transformado desde la propia Antigüedad por lecturas alegóricas, moralizantes, contaminationes, etc., haciéndolo campo fértil para la variación e innovación en sus elementos narrativos e iconográfi cos.
