Dr. Isabel Alonso Belmonte holds a M.A. in Spanish as a Foreign Language Teacher Education and a Ph.D. in English Philology from University Complutense of Madrid (Spain). She currently works as an ELT associate professor at the University Autónoma de Madrid, where she has been training Primary and Secondary EFL pre service and in service teachers for more than 10 years now. During this time, she has participated in several international projects on foreign language teacher training in primary and secondary education in a European context. As for her research, her areas of specialization are discourse analysis and applied linguistics to language teaching (both Spanish and English as a foreign language), areas in which she has extensively published. She has also led national and international research projects on foreign language learning and linguistic analysis.

This paper presents a multimodal, cross-cultural analysis of the most salient framing devices in ... more This paper presents a multimodal, cross-cultural analysis of the most salient framing devices in on-line news about the US Embassy relocation to Jerusalem and subsequent revolts in Gaza Strip in May 2018. Drawing from a socio-cognitive and critical approach to discourse analysis, a sample of newsbites published in different online mainstream European newspapers were analysed. Findings unveil a distinctive set of multimodal devices grouped around four categories-subject choice, composition, distance and point of view, that appear indistinctively in both visual and textual modes. These are used by newsmakers to create and manage communities of shared values about the issues reported. Also, interesting differences among newspapers were found in the context of European media discourse when dealing with these events.

This chapter’s main goal is to shed light onto the most characteristic meaning making processes i... more This chapter’s main goal is to shed light onto the most characteristic meaning making processes in digital storytelling by thoroughly analyzing a single digital narrative from a functional-cognitive perspective. This mixed approach for a case study allows the analysts to unveil the macro and micro discourse strategies and the cognitive processes developed by both the narrator and the audience to produce and interpret the multiple meanings conveyed by the different modes in a digital story. We believe findings presented here can be of interest for discourse analysts, cognitivists and researchers working in multimodality.

From local to global: Visual strategies of glocalisation in digital storytelling

This paper's main goal is to explore the function of images in the structuring of digital stories... more This paper's main goal is to explore the function of images in the structuring of digital stories and their role in the construction of global meanings from personal experiences. Findings presented here come from the analysis of thirty digital stories taken from several specialised websites on the Internet. The methodology we used is a mixture of the traditional Labovian narrative schema (Labov, 1972) and a multimodalmainly visualanalysis (Kress and Van Leeuwen, 1996). Among the most interesting results, images play a significant role as evaluative mechanisms by which local, culturally specific elements in digital narratives interact with a global perspective for a universal audience.

Foreign Language Teachers’ Feedback Practices: a Comparative Study

The purpose of this study is to describe the current foreign language (FL) assessment and feedbac... more The purpose of this study is to describe the current foreign language (FL) assessment and feedback practices as reported by 213 experienced primary teachers in Slovenia and Spain. An ad hoc questionnaire was designed, validated and administered to 113 Slovenian and 100 Spanish teachers. The data were collected and analysed with the use of descriptive and inferential statistics. Among the most relevant findings, it is noteworthy that Spanish teachers focus on providing feedback on receptive skills while their Slovenian colleagues pay more attention to productive skills. Also, results from both groups reveal a lack of FL pronunciation feedback and scarce attention to interactive aspects of communication.

PRÓLOGO i los prolegómenos de los Congresos Expolingua se remontan a 1984, tal y como relata la i... more PRÓLOGO i los prolegómenos de los Congresos Expolingua se remontan a 1984, tal y como relata la introducción al cuarto volumen de Didáctica del Español como lengua extranjera dentro de los Cuadernos del Tiempo Libre, bajo el epígrafe Colección Expolingua, el primer certamen no tuvo lugar hasta 1988. Un año antes, en 1987, se iniciaron los primeros contactos para poner en marcha un programa para profesores de E/LE. Todo ello con la dirección científica del prof. Miguel Siguán y con la coordinación de las prof. Lourdes Miquel y Neus Sans. El mismo equipo está en Expolingua al frente de sus Jornadas de E/LE cuando en 2002 celebramos nuestro décimo quinto aniversario. En algunas ocasiones hemos tenido la oportunidad de decir públicamente que los congresos Expolingua son un autentico milagro en base a su intrínseca contradicción. En efecto, sí en latín gradus significa un paso y gradi, el andar, congredi es caminar conjuntamente y congressus, un encuentro. De ahí que un congreso tiene siempre una connotación itinerante. Por norma, existe un consenso general para que los congresos, haciendo honor a su etimología, celebren cada convocatoria en distintas sedes. Sin embargo, los Congresos Expolingua y sus Jornadas y Seminarios de E/LE contradicen totalmente esta regla: desde hace quince años su sede es permanente y su celebración anual. Y no sólo esto. Mas de cuatro mil profesores han pasado por sus aulas: se trata de la única cita para profesores de E/LE periódica no convocada por instituciones públicas y que mantiene su prestigio inalterado año tras año. Se ha confirmado como el foro anual de E/LE, un foro tan animado y concurrido que ha tenido que imponerse el "numerus clausus". Un foro en el que participan docentes de todos los niveles y sistemas educativos: enseñanza privada de adultos, aprendizaje precoz, centros oficiales españoles en el exterior, Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas, Universidades europeas y americanas y profesores de español de otros ámbitos. monográficos marcoELE.

As products of dynamic societies, they are influenced by social structures, by changing social systems and not least by the rapidly growing technological development in modern society. As dynamic constructs, genres change with changes in society, and new genres emerge as a product of new technology. This creates a continual need for research in the changing nature of old genres and the emergence of new ones &quot;. (Trosborg, 2000: ix) Abstract: This paper explores genre regularities in newsbites (Knox 2007), an online newspaper genre, from a socio-cognitive point of view (Berkenkotter and Huckin 1993). Real examples from newsbites as instantiated in on-line mainstream Spanish newspapers were considered and explored to ground the maturity of this digital news genre as the product of the social interaction with the virtual community of users. Our analysis evidences that newsbites have evolved into a conventional structure on its own and that this development is the result of the needs and expectations of the readers as well as the constraints and requirements of the digital medium.

Nuestra intencion en este articulo es estudiar el orden de los constituyentes en la oracion decla... more Nuestra intencion en este articulo es estudiar el orden de los constituyentes en la oracion declarativa en espanol y en ingles e investigar el papel que desempena dicho orden en la ensenanza/aprendizaje de E/LE por parte de alumnos angloparlantes. El ingles y el espanol pertenecen a la misma familia de las lenguas SVO (Tomlin, 1986). No obstante, en lo que se refiere al orden de los constituyentes en la clausula, pertenecen a dos grupos diferentes. El ingles utiliza el orden de los constituyentes con fines gramaticales, es decir, para senalar cual es el sujeto, el verbo, etcetera. El espanol, por el contrario, es una lengua flexiva que dispone del orden de los componentes de la frase con fines pragmaticos, fundamentalmente para indicar al oyente cual es la informacion conocida y cual la nueva (Bolinger, 1954-55; Hatcher, 1956; Contreras, 1976; Hickey, 1993, entre otros). Por lo tanto, mientras el ingles tiene un orden de palabras bastante rigido, gobernado por la sintaxis, el espanol es una lengua mucho mas flexible, que permite un mayor numero de combinaciones entre los constituyentes de la clausula. En nuestra opinion, el espanol ofrece tal numero de posibilidades combinatorias solo en la oracion declarativa que el hablante no nativo y, en especial, el angloparlante, por las caracteristicas de su lengua materna, no siempre ve de forma clara cual es el equivalente de estas combinaciones en su idioma. Ademas, en la mayoria de los casos, el alumno angloparlante desconoce el valor pragmatico de algunas de estas combinaciones en espanol y su funcion en el discurso.
