O conceito de pré-esforço em estruturas de engenharia civil, hoje amplamente divulgado, consiste ... more O conceito de pré-esforço em estruturas de engenharia civil, hoje amplamente divulgado, consiste na introdução de um conjunto de "acções auto-equilibradas" sobre a estrutura, criteriosamente escolhidas por forma a contrariar tanto quanto possível as acções de serviço a que a estrutura estará submetida. Estas "acções auto-equilibradas" apenas são função do traçado dos cabos e das forças de pré-esforço instaladas, portanto não variando com o tipo e intensidade das solicitações a que a estrutura vai estando submetida. A acelerada evolução tecnológica do último quarto do século XX sustenta o desenvolvimento de soluções estruturais com comportamento adaptativo -"estruturas inteligentes". The present paper describes a new modular bridge solution with higher range of spans, load capaci... more The present paper describes a new modular bridge solution with higher range of spans, load capacity, fast assembly and smart packing. As an upgrade of the conventional Bailey bridges type, BERD developed a new structural solution designed to be launched by increment launching with a superfast telescopic system. In remote locations where building a conventional concrete bridge can represent a logistic challenge regarding materials and equipment transport, the modular steel bridges aim to minimize the logistic operations impact of the infrastructure. In fact, modular bridges are aligned with the three main principles of sustainability in construction—reuse, reduce and recycle. Being reused several times with minimum maintenance needed, high capacity to be adapted to several span lengths and totally recycled in the end of life cycle, modular bridges highly fits in the sustainability concept. Modular Steel Bridges are commonly used for the rapid reestablishment of interrupted roads and to a range of spans up to 60 m, and rarely for spans up to 90 m. In this last case there are few solutions available on the market and no longer than 90 m.

The present paper describes a methodology to achieve operational and integrity validation of the ... more The present paper describes a methodology to achieve operational and integrity validation of the structureautomation system on scaffolding systems with organic prestressing. Said methodology was developed for the first full-scale application of this new type of structure and it comprises software safety tools, experimental validation tests and checklist implementation. The main characteristics of the movable scaffolding system are highlighted and a description of the automation project and inherent control system is given, comprising operational modes, hardware and software issues. Finally, after providing recorded data for the structure-automation system in service, the feasibility and efficiency of the presented automation solution are confirmed.
