Interculturalists who work without critical reflection on the dominant worldview, America, add to... more Interculturalists who work without critical reflection on the dominant worldview, America, add to cultural problems rather than providing solutions. This horizon of America is more practical and technological than other civilizations. Education researchers tend to focus on puzzle-solving technical questions. Education practitioners tend to promote the prophetic and hermetic habits of mind, emphasizing emotion and feeling instead of applying different formal logics or analyzing different social logics. Interculturalists, generally speaking, do not question too deeply the philosophical presuppositions of their cultural work and fail to think about how their work functions in a segmented capitalist market appealing to different yet fashionable popular tastes. If we interculturalists do not consider this horizon of our own habits of mind or cultures of inquiry, then we will be contributing more to cultural misunderstanding and conflict than we should be. When we become so embroiled in the day-to-day issues of our work that we fail to see this big picture, we will need ways to engage with other cultures and civilizations so that our habits of mind are enlarged and our interactions improved. Not to do so is a real and large problem.

America's Education Empire: The End of Neoliberal Globalization and the Rise of Regional Constellations of Enlightened Progress

America and the world are facing an economic and political crisis which has important implication... more America and the world are facing an economic and political crisis which has important implications for domestic and global politics of education. The paper identifies the root of the crisis in the financialization of global capitalism and the declining hegemony of the United States in geopolitics. It establishes the relationship between the history of America's Education Empire and the imperial role of the US as a superpower in the dominance, hegemony and governance of other great and regional powers. The article concludes with a focus on the role of the global intelligentsia, professors, teachers and community workers and the important opportunities that may arise for a more progressive politics to replace current neoliberal rule and Anglo-American myopia and hubris.
