–The paper is an empirical study examining the tangible and intangible culture of rural tourism w... more –The paper is an empirical study examining the tangible and intangible culture of rural tourism with a focus on rural transformation from daily local into commercial behaviour due to presence of tourism activities. It explores the process of commercialization of tangible and intangible culture. The case studies of Brayut and Pentingsari rural tourism village are studied through observation and interviews of physical and non physical transformation with community members and the rural tourism manager. Both villages are the unique growing tourist village in Yogyakarta, but Brayut has a potential asset of maintained condition traditional Javanese house in whereas Pentingsari has an attractive natural of green village with the local cultural heritage. The qualitative empirical research study was applied to explore the transformation of cultural meaning by the locals before and after commercialization process. Firstly, the study reviewed the original tangible and intangible culture before transformation. Secondly, changes in cultural functions and meaning are analyzed in the current situation caused by its transforming into commercial activities. By examining the comparison of tangible and intangible culture in the commercializing process is built to understand the relationships between the two and the quality of its transformation.

The transformation process was driven by the desire to grow, while in the case of Manding the process was initially hindered by the prevailing tradition in the community. This study aimed to explore the role of culture in transformation process. The case study research was applied to illustrate the unique case of transformation from the traditional rural area into rural with industrial activity and to explore why and how cultures took place in such process including the rural-urban linkage.

It offers rural tourism as alternative tourist attractions in a natural and cultural heritage scheme which has been the mainstay of the local government . Rural tourism offer the tourist experience into a new way with direct involvement in the daily life of the rural community. The rural tourism is managed by the rural community itself (called as CBT-Community Based Tourism). This study aimed to measure the success of community empowerment through the rural tourism based on local resources to improve the community welfare. In addition, it introduces a combination of variables that define the economic, social and environment aspect. The study takes place in Pentingsari Village, which has a unique nature and society as a main source of their rural tourism . The quantitative and qualitative empirical research measured based on local resources from the economic, social and physical environment point of view.
