Internal friction and elastic modulus measurements were carried out on AISI 304 stainless steel c... more Internal friction and elastic modulus measurements were carried out on AISI 304 stainless steel coated by physical vapor-deposited TiN, using a torsion pendulum and a vibrant-reed instrument. Some experiments showed several internal friction peaks, which are attributed to dislocation relaxation and to martensitic transformation from ␥ to ␣ . The materials were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Two new methods are proposed to determine the adhesion energy by internal friction in thin films layered materials: for the first it is necessary to determine the enthalpy by means of isochronal internal friction measurements, while for the second it is necessary to perform isothermal measurements.

Objective: To describe a patient with infertility and phenotypic combination of Turner and triple... more Objective: To describe a patient with infertility and phenotypic combination of Turner and triple-X syndrome related to mos 47,XXX/45X/46,XX karyotype. Design: Case report. Setting: Patient(s): The 24-year-old patient presented a phenotypic combination of Turner syndrome and X polysomy. She showed wide and short neck, low posterior hairline, cubitus valgus, bilateral shortening of the fourth and fifth metacarpals, multiple nevi, and m€ ullerian anomalies but had spontaneous pubarche, thelarche, and menarche. Intervention(s): Laboratory evaluations, imaging studies, ovarian biopsy, G-banding karyotype, and in situ fluorescence hybridization. Main Outcome Measure(s): Clinical and laboratory findings. Result(s): A karyotype: mos 47,XXX/45X/46,XX was found in the cytogenetic studies, a bicornuate uterus in the ultrasonographic scan, and a normal ovarian profile in the laboratory tests. Conclusion(s): The infertility in the present case can be related to either bicornuate uterus or subclinical abortions due to aneuploid ova. Cytogenetic assessment provides important information regarding infertile patients with uterine factors and short stature. (Fertil Steril Ò 2009;92:1747.e5-e7.

Saliva of haematophagous arthropods contain biomolecules involved directly or indirectly with the... more Saliva of haematophagous arthropods contain biomolecules involved directly or indirectly with the haematophagy process, and among them are encountered some complement system inhibitors. The most obvious function for these inhibitors would be the protection of the midgut against injury by the complement. To investigate this hypothesis, Triatoma brasiliensis nymphs were forced to ingest human serum in conditions in which the protection of midgut by the inhibitors is bypassed. In these conditions, the anterior midgut epithelium was injured by the complement, causing cell death. Once some insects such as Aedes aegypti have no salivary inhibitors, we hypothesized the existence of intestinal inhibitors. The inhibitory activity was investigated in the intestine of A. aegypti as well as in the saliva and intestine of other three triatomine species (T. brasiliensis, T. infestans and Rhodnius prolixus) using an immunological method able to determine the level of deposition of some complement factors (C1q, C3b, or C4b) on the surface of complement activator molecules linked to microplates. São vários os objetivos do estudo da gestão de custos, dentre eles: fornecer informações sobre a rentabilidade e desempenho das atividades exercidas; planejamento e controle das operações; obter informações para tomada de decisão. Os resultados finais do estudo mostram que nenhuma empresa pode sobreviver e manter suas atividades sem o controle de custos eficiente, uma vez que as empresas vivem de seus lucros, e se não souber os custos de suas operações ficará vulnerável à concorrência.
