Preliminary results obtained 8 months after the initiation of the study show that the E. viminalis, from Canela, Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil), and from Batlow -N .S. w. (Austrália) , presented the best perfomance as far as the growth rate is concerned. and was not injured by frost. These results. however. Should be complemented with studies related with the silviculture of the species. Also the introduction of other species and provenances should be tested.

Animals were classified in two groups, according to reproductive history of each mare; the first group was performed by normal mares (control group) and the second one by animals with reproductive disorders (barren mares). From each animal, around 15 ml of vessel blood were collected. Hemoglobins were typed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, 7% of concentration in the resolving gel, in a discontinuous alkaline (pH 8.6) buffer system. The following hemoglobins phenotypes were found in the control group, with the respective frequencies: Ar~(2.0%), A1A2m+m+(21.0%) and A1A2m+m (27.0%). To the group performed by reproductive disorders carrier animals the following results were obtained A-,-(10.0%), A1A2m+m+(12.0%) and A1A2m+m (28.0%). The difference observed in the Ar --phenotype between the groups may be due to a probable liaison with hemo globin locus and another one related with reproductive traits. Besides this fact, tropical environment effects may be act ing on this locus, thus leading to obtained results.

Hemoglobins variants were identified through agarstarch gel electrophoresis, in discontinuous buffer system, pH 8.6. Animals showing one fast band (A,) were considered AA (4.4%); buffaloes with two bands (A, and A2) were considered AB (31.87%) when A2 was weak and BB (31.87%), when A2 was strong. A third band was detected, named N. Phenotypes with three bands with the respective frequencies: ABN (3.3% and BBN (30.77%). Densitometric analyses and the lack of AAN phenotype drove us to conclude that, in some way, the mutant (3 chains synthesis that originated N band was related probably to a" allele. Probably, the high frequency of N band was due to the intensive use of few breeders.

Natural products are substances generally obtained in mixtures from natural sources. For identification and structure determination it is necessary to isolate each compound present in the mixture through chromatographic methods. This procedure is frequently used due to the great diversity and the structural complexity of the compounds found within the mixtures, and usually demands time. So, trying to reduce the time spent during this process, we developed an expert system able to analyze complex mixtures of compounds. Method. SISCONST program was developed to aid the process of structural determination of organic compounds by means of analysis of chemical shifts and multiplicities obtained from the 13 C NMR DEPT spectra. The program may predict the most probable skeleton type for a compound under analysis and suggests several substructures from the signals assigned in 13 C NMR. In this study, we have used the program to identify the individual components present in a mixture from the 13 C NMR data. Results. The program was evaluated with a mixture of triterpenes isolated from Cybistax antisyphilitica. The results show that the program was able to propose all components present in the mixture, including a triterpene not reported yet in the literature. Conclusions. The method described in this study allowed us to achieve the correct identification of the substances present in the mixture. The procedure can therefore be applied as a tool for analysis of compounds whose separation through chromatographic methods is very difficult. One of the advantages of this method is to detect the presence of new compounds in mixtures. Availability. About the software used in this study, its availability or more details can be supplied by getting a touch with the corresponding author.

Cross-sectional study involving 17 women with FPHL and five controls. Scalp skin samples were processed for HE and TUNEL assays. The variables were compared according to the categories of follicles (terminal versus miniaturized) and groups of patients (FPHL versus controls). There was a higher apoptosis index among miniaturized follicles and among the test cases (p < 0.01). Microinflammation was prominent among miniaturized follicles, especially from FPHL (p = 0.02). In addition, a positive correlation between inflammatory infiltrate and apoptosis in miniaturized follicles (rS = 0.68; p < 0.01) was found. Apoptosis was prominent in hair follicles from the FPHL group, as well as in miniaturized ones. Moreover, it was also correlated to the inflammatory infiltrate, which suggests that inflammation can lead to apoptosis and play a role in t...

Twenty-five adult Boa constrictor amarali snakes maintained in captivity were used to determine the influence of seasons on their hematologic values and electrophoretic profile of hemoglobin. A complete blood cell count (CBC) and examination for hemoparasites were performed in the summer and winter of 2004. Hemoglobin was stored for later electrophoresis. Two snakes were detected with blood parasites (Hepatozoon sp.) in the winter and four in the summer, although it appears that their presence did not cause any significant alterations in the CBC. The electrophoretic analysis of the samples demonstrated two-four hemoglobin bands in this species.
