pelling coverage of the religious life of San Antonio's Hispanic Catholics, their devotion to the... more pelling coverage of the religious life of San Antonio's Hispanic Catholics, their devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe, and their festivities, music, dance (the serenata performed in the San Fernando sanctuary, for example), art, literature, and more, but it also presents significant coverage about how Hispanics there have dealt with racial, political, economic, and social biases directed against them because of their race and Catholic faith. Chapter 3, "Defender of Dignidad, 1836-1900," is especially strong regarding these issues. On the other hand, chapter 4, "Companion in el Exilio, 1900-1940," focuses on the exiles from Mexico to the United States, especially at San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, and their dedication to Our Lady of Guadalupe as the secularist government of Mexico, from 1917 through the next several decades, suppressed Catholicism in their homeland. Guadalupe and Her Faithful is a book that everyone-scholars, students, or persons just wanting to come to a more clear understanding of Hispanic Catholics and their devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe-especially in the San Antonio area-must read. It should be available in libraries across the nation, because any research on the Guadalupan legacy among Catholics, Hispanic or otherwise, would be incomplete without reference being made to Matovina's work.
