Duo sauntered up to the guy he'd been talking to more than an hour ago. "Hey. She finally let you go?"
Heero raised an eyebrow, unsure of whether it was for the implication of criticism of her, or the implication that he'd been observing for quite some time. "There was a lecture that had to run its course. Sorry to keep you waiting."
"A lecture? On New Year's Eve?"
"I don't run into her that often. I guess she had to take the opportunity."
"You don't run into her that often... and you still managed to earn yourself a lecture?"
"I'm a bad influence on her brother," he said wryly.
"That was... That wasn't one of Quatre's sisters, was it?"
"Trowa's sister."
"Ah, I don't think we've met."
"And... Quatre's done with you?" To be honest, maybe he'd been observing Duo for a bit over Catherine's shoulder, too, and maybe he was already fairly sure what the answer would be.
"Yes! It took me a while to extract myself, and then I came back to look for you, only to see you'd gotten waylaid, too. I was afraid I wouldn't get another chance to talk with you all night."
"Thank you for your patience, I suppose."
"Do you know what Quatre called me over for? He wanted to introduce me to someone, one of his sister's friends. Can you believe that? There I was, in the middle of flirting with you, and Quatre interrupts me to try to hook me up. Awkward."
"Flirting? Is that what that was?" He had thought it was just good chemistry, but maybe that was a potato / potahto sort of thing.
"I was working my way up to it. I was just building some good momentum when we got interrupted. Now I gotta start all over."
"Not so sure about that. That you have to start all over," Heero clarified when he saw Duo's puzzled frown. "We had just met. I don't think we have to meet again, this time."
"True! Meeting's the hard part, sometimes, in this big world of ours."
"So. Maybe we can just pick up where we left off."
Duo smiled charmingly at him. "Already started."
The fizz of their chemistry made a small smile bubble up in response. "So you have."
