Two Degrees : 9

Quatre saw a photo booth and pulled Trowa off with him with a bright, eager charm that set off Heero's internal warnings.  It confirmed what he had already suspected.  He sighed softly and turned to his companion.  "I don't know how Quatre hasn't realized yet... that I can always tell when he's trying to set me up with someone.  I apologize."

Duo looked at him curiously.  "What's to apologize for?"

"I don't know how Quatre hasn't realized that there's never anything but awkward silence when he returns.  To say nothing of my growing exasperation with him."

"Well.  This is a little awkward."

"I'm glad you agree."

"But only because I actually asked Trowa to find an opportunity to re-introduce us."

"You..."  Heero blinked at him for a few seconds.  "What in the world for?"

Duo shrugged.  "I don't remember there being any awkward silence between us the last time we talked."

"But we were talking about our work," he responded, puzzled.

Duo grinned.  "I'm pleased you remember."  He let that sit there for a good long moment before moving on.  "I remember some other guy trying to talk to you about your work, and I remember you shutting him down pretty quickly.  It was actually pretty awesome, just how neatly you denied him anything to latch on to.  You don't look like you remember that part."

Heero shook his head slowly.  "I do that often enough."

Duo chortled.  "But, I managed to get you going, and you do remember that part, and so do I, and I have to say, I rather enjoyed it, above and beyond the work-related content of the conversation.  And so here we are."

"That's... unexpected."

"It's unexpected that you said anything, to be honest.  Apologizing and all.  Why did you feel compelled to?"

"Well, I..."  Heero considered that for a moment, somewhat surprised by himself, now that Duo mentioned it.  "Did I... start a conversation with you?"

"I think you did."  Duo chuckled at his faintly mortified expression.  "Do you really hate talking to people that much?"

"I... just don't warm up to people very quickly."  There was a note of wonder in his tone.  "Not... usually."

"This seems like a promising start to me.  Let's keep it going."
