Abdellah Chalh holds an Associate Professor position at the University of Tunis El Manar (Faculty of Sciences of Tunis, Department of Biological Sciences) where he is of charge of developing and teaching courses of Biostatistics, Applied Statistics and Probability, Linear Geostatistics, Biomathematics, and Quantitative Genetics. In addition to the teaching tasks, Abdellah Chalh supervises PhD theses and masters. He received his B.S. in Animal Biology from the University Cadi Ayyad of Marrakech (Faculty of Sciences Semlalia) of Morocco, and a M.S. (in Animal Ecology), a Doctorate Degree (in Theoretical and Applied Genetics) a Ph.D. degree (Theoretical Biology) and an Habilitation To Supervise Research from the University of Tunis El Manar (Faculty of Sciences of Tunis) in Tunisia.

This study explores the ecological diversity of otoliths in Mugil cephalus by analysing data from... more This study explores the ecological diversity of otoliths in Mugil cephalus by analysing data from 190 individuals collected at different sites, including the Porto Novo lagoon, the Cotonou lagoon and Lake Nokoué. The results revealed signi cant differences in otolith morphology, showing signi cant associations with the biological characteristics of the sh at each site. Analysis of the asymmetry between the right and left sides reveals distinctions between these two aspects. There is a signi cant structuring of stock units according to otolith shape, with marked differences between the different geographical sampling areas. The asymmetry percentages illustrate marked differences between the study sites, suggesting variations in the impact of environmental factors on otolith morphology. The higher asymmetry percentages observed in the Porto-Novo lagoon and the Cotonou lagoon indicate a different morphological response compared to Lake Nokoué, which could be attributable to distinct environmental conditions and speci c selective pressures.

Morphological and biometrical characterization of otoliths for three populations of the genus Pagellus in the western and eastern in Mediterranean Sea (Tunisia)

The shape of otoliths of three species of fishes of the genus Pagellus (Pagellus erythrinus, Page... more The shape of otoliths of three species of fishes of the genus Pagellus (Pagellus erythrinus, Pagellus acarne and Pagellus bogaraveo) sampled in the marine environment of the western Mediterranean (Kelibia Sea) and the eastern Mediterranean (Bizerte Sea) in Tunisia was studied in order to determine a differentiation by a discriminant factorial analysis and an analysis of biometric measurements. The different results showed an asymmetry within and between the otoliths of the different populations. Despite the difference between Pagellus erythrinus of the Western basin and Pagellus erythrinus of the Eastern basin, the observed intraspecific variation fades in front of the interspecific variation. The Pagellus erythrinus sampled in the basin (Western and Eastern) allowed us to highlight the polymorphism of the otoliths thanks to the highly significant differences obtained (p-value < 0.0001).

Stomata development variability of ten wheat genotypes under early water stress

In contrast, few studies were conducted on the stomatal development control to limit water loss. The objective of this study was to investigate stomatal density control in response to water deprivation for ten wheat genotypes: six varieties of Durum wheat and four varieties of Bread wheat. Three water regimes were applied. Separate statistical analysis of leaf area (LA) and stomatical density (SD) at three leaf stages showed significant differences between Durum wheat and Bread wheat and all varieties at each stage. Results reveled that SD increased with leaf stages. Drought reduced LA and induced various responses in terms of SD. In another hand, tolerance indices of SD was in concordance with results based on LA and reveled that only genotype "Mahmoudi" limited the stomatal development in response to water loss. In this study, we investigated the effect of Zincum Metallicum (ZM) on zinc (Zn) toxicity in the ... more In this study, we investigated the effect of Zincum Metallicum (ZM) on zinc (Zn) toxicity in the plant species Lepidium sativum. We focused on growth, Zn uptake and numerous biochemical parameters. Seedlings were hydroponically subjected during 7 days to 0.05, 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 µM Zn2+, in the absence or presence of 15ch or 9ch ZM. In the absence of ZM, Zn induced negative effect on growth especially at the dose of 2mM. Zn induced also chlorosis, reduced total chlorophyll and/or carotenoid content and increased the level of malondialdehyde (MDA). Under Zn-toxicity (500, 1000 and 1500 µM), the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), gaiacol peroxidase (GPX) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities were increased and/or unaltered, while at 2000 µM Zn affected the activity of these enzymes. The result show a significant results that are clearly demonstrated by an asymmetry when comparing otoliths (P < 0.05) for S.scriba and for S.salpa showed a symmetry (P = 0.056).However for biometric comparison, between the rigth and left otoliths for each population, we detected a highly difference between otolith in all the parameter of S.salpa . All these difference existing between the two species can be related to the environmental specificity and stress. In addition, asymmetry in width character is could be explained by the vulnerability of this trait to immediate changes in environmental factors.

Here, we analysed 102 specimens originating from two locations along the Tunisian coasts (Kerkennah and Zembra Islands). Otolith shape was examined using shape indices and Fourier descriptors and combined with relationship between otolith weight and fish length. In a first step, their comparison through discriminant factor analyses (DFA) was run for all fish with right otoliths, left otoliths and both otoliths pooled. The aim of this study was to investigate, for the first time, the stock discrimination of this species for two Tunisian populations based on sagittae shape, using different statistical analyses. The specimens were collected during three months from two lagoons' stations in southern of Tunisia: El Biban and Boughrara. In total, 120 fish were sampled from the two sites, 60 fish from each lagoon (30 males and 30 females), and included for different statistical analyses. The Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA) for otolith shape showed statistically significant difference between specimens of the two lagoons. The contour shape and morphometric variables of the otolith were considered as a good tool to differentiate Greater weever genders, also there were inconsistencies in the symmetry of the otolith pairs of this species. This asymmetry is used as measures of developmental instability resulting from anthropogenic or natural disturbances.
