Diese Masterarbeit diskutiert die philosophischen Grundlagen der Laws of Form von George Spencer-... more Diese Masterarbeit diskutiert die philosophischen Grundlagen der Laws of Form von George Spencer-Brown, ihre Relevanz für die Systemtheorie sowie ihre Rezeption durch Niklas Luhmann. Dabei werden verschiedene Schlüsselfragen zu den Laws of Form beantwortet, einschließlich ihres Zwecks, ihrer Relevanz und ihrer Anwendbarkeit. Der Grundgedanke ist, dass die Laws of Form eine Sprachphilosophie sind, die in Struktur und Inhalt an Wittgensteins Werk angelehnt sind. Sie entwickeln ein Regelwerk für die Verwendung der Befehlssprache und behandeln die Entstehung der Objektivität als eine Konsequenz der Befolgung von Befehlen. Sie enthalten auch eine semiotische Komponente, indem sie die Trennung von Signifikat und Signifikant von einem Befehl abhängig machen. Aus dieser Semiotik leitet sich der mathematische Formalismus ab, welcher als das Indikationskalkül bezeichnet wird. Die Masterarbeit erklärt auch das Konzept des Re-entry sowie der Interpretation des Indikationskalkül. Darüber hinaus wird die Rezeption der Laws of Form in der Systemtheorie von Heinz von Foerster, Varela und Maturana kritisch diskutiert. Die These ist, dass Spencer-Brown mit dem Feld sowohl inhaltlich als auch historisch wenig zu tun hatte. Genauso wird kritisch auf die Missverständnisse in der Rezeption von Niklas Luhmann und Dirk Baecker eingegangen. Viel wichtiger klärt diese Masterarbeit darüber auf, welche Rolle Spencer-Brown in der soziologischen Systemtheorie spielte und spielen sollte. Darüber hinaus wird eine Grundlage für eine neue soziologische Leseart der Laws of Form gelegt und ein neuer Entwurf für eine soziologische Interpretation des Indikationskalküls vorgestellt.
This thesis discusses the philosophical foundations of the Laws of Form, a work by George Spencer... more This thesis discusses the philosophical foundations of the Laws of Form, a work by George Spencer-Brown, and its relevance in systems theory, as well as its understanding by the re-nowned sociologist Niklas Luhmann and explores its relevance in his work. The paper answers several key questions about the Laws of Form, including their purpose, relevance, and applica-bility. The Laws of Form is a philosophy of language that is similar to Wittgenstein's work in structure and content. The Laws of Form propose that objects come into existence only through the form, and that distinctions are consequences of commands. The distinction be-tween the signifier and the signified is the semiotic component of the Laws of Form, and mathematical formalism is derived from this semiotics. The article also explains the concept of re-entry and the interpretation of the calculus of indications. Although the Laws of Form were mentioned in systems theory, this thesis found that Spencer-Brown had little to do with the field, neither in content nor in history. Moreover, this thesis argues that Luhmann misunder-stood Spencer-Brown, mainly due to his confusion between the concepts of distinction and observation. It critically discusses Luhmann's misunderstandings of the Laws of Form and his attempt to link the work with his theory of social systems. From this different understanding an attempt is made to create a different sociological reading of the Laws of Form and create a sociological interpretation of the calculus of indications.
