We have had a couple of really cold days in these parts but now it snows so it is not quite as bad for the daily walks etc. I used some heating candles in a couple of spots in the house to help generate some additional warmth and it works pretty good. I also had a guy coming over to check the facade of the house since I have discovered some cracks and it is fine. I can deal with it in the summer. I guess the house has settled a bit. It happens when you have hot and cold weather over time.

Survival Mom

Posted: August 3, 2025 in Books, Hobby, Prepping

In times like these it is a pretty good idea to take a look at how well prepared one is in case of SHTF scenarios (google it), should they manifest in real life. As they will (maybe next week, surely at some point down the road in one way or another). A few years ago I was pretty alone in thinking about such matters, now I can see people all over the place (at work, among friends and even within the extended family) getting involved. It is never too late to get cracking (or, one day it will be, so…). I will showcase books and here is one, “Survival Mom” (Harper One, 2012) by Lisa Bedford. I pick this today because it might be more attractive for women at first sight. And it is a good book. This title is still available, so here is a door just waiting to be opened and explored.

Corned Beef And Mashed Potatoes

Posted: July 29, 2025 in Prepping

The world is pretty much bonkers and so today I checked the supplies that might be needed in case of emergencies. And lo and behold, I need to update it all badly. I had a hunch that I had neglected it for a bit too long so I will be concentrating on this in August. I need to chuck away 80% of the existing supplies. I just did not follow the old routine, and so here we are. Money and resources down the drain. Still, this is important so I will have to get cracking. Today, I tried out some surviving corned beef mixed with mashed potatoes and it was absolutely delicious. Now that I know that it is, and that it is easy enough to store (and prepare), it will be part of the essential stuff for sure. It was just a wild guess on my part but I decided to give it a shot. I have not blogged much about these things for a while but I will get back to it now. There is a tag for this on the blog after all, and with the world being what it is… Well…

Alpha Farm

It is not hard to see why survivalist novels are doing well, one quick look at world affairs will take care of that. I enjoy the genre and here we have “Alpha Farm – The Beginning” (self published, 2012) by author Annie Berdel.

Homestead

This is for the preppers out there. Check out the trailer for the movie “Homestead” that premieres in Stateside theaters today. Neal McDonough stars in this post apocalypse drama, which may well turn into grim reality before you know it… Neal has been interviewed by Glenn Beck about the film and Hollywood, so you can check that out. As for the times we live in, I certainly hope that 2025 will be way more stable and peaceful. Having said that, Swedish authorities have told whomever is in charge of such things to prepare for 500,000 potential graves. Just in case.

One Step Ahead

Recoil Off Grid Magazine 58 popped up for sale in my neck of the woods. Stateside publication, published bimonthly. Has been a while since I last bought one of these publications. Today I tested a can of Mountain House Spaghetti Bolognese (freeze dried) that I had had tucked away for a rainy day since the mid 1990s. The shelf life is 40 years so I wanted to know how it had fared over the years. All I had to do was to cook some water and mix it well with the contents. Luckily it was OK, which is good to know. I have noticed in recent times that people, or at least way more than before, is gearing up for bad times. Not hard to see why.

Storm Matches

Bought some storm matches of which you see one of the packages here. The prepper in me just loves this stuff. Good to have on trips or for unforseen situations.

Sacred Heart

The old ticker is not quite what it used to be and when I spotted this bottle as I was shopping groceries I figured “Why not?”. Good for the immune system, the brain and the heart. And it has been around since 1854. Pretty good taste too, not bad at all. Just a spoonful a day and you get a bit of extra into the old system. This is obviously the prepper in me talking. Kind of like the look of the green glass bottle too.

Took a day off work today and managed to keep myself crazy busy all day long. Bought a bucket of lingonberries from a friend and cooked some jam (for the breakfast porridge routine) for the first time. Good fun to learn such things. Also got word today that Babymetal has the cover of both the Japanese and the UK editions of upcoming Metal Hammer issues. Seen here is UK Metal Hammer 379, out now (over there, it will take a week or two for the magazine to pop up here on import). Second UK Metal Hammer cover this year, not too shabby. And it took them just three weeks to notch up 2,000,000 views for the latest video, “Metali”. Loads of good vibes from the current US Tour as well with co-headliners Dethklok. One festival had to be cancelled due to bad weather, but apart from that it has been quite a success story. When you hit the 10,000 mark (bums on seats), which has happened on this trip, you are doing something right.

Here We Go

Harvested the first potatoes of the year from the boxes I built in the backyard last year, and prepared a few meals. They were bigger this year, as I planted earlier. Last year I harvested all of them in one go but this year I will chose the moments with more care (basically when I need some, I will have to see how the weather is changing – there will be a breaking point of course). For next year, I will build much larger boxes, I know exactly how and where to put them. Love this, I really do.
