Foundations of Data Science introduces core data science concepts including computational and inferential thinking, along with core data science skills including computer programming and statistical methods. The course presents these topics in the context of hands-on analysis of real-world data sets, including economic data, document collections, geographical data, and social networks. The course also explores social issues surrounding data analysis such as privacy and design. Prerequisite: Completion of the R1 General Education Requirement

Mubina: [From the audience, raised her hand and received a microphone to pose her question to the entire university faculty, staff, and administration present.] I have successfully taught my EDUC 203 course on diversity for the past 15 years, but for the rst time, I feel threatened, as a Muslim and woman of color, to discuss matters of race and privilege with my [predominantly white] students in the upcoming semester, given the dangerous prevalence of White nationalism and xenophobia of late. What support can professors like me expect from the university in this regard? [The question met with nods of empathetic concern from many in the room; however, no one facilitating the session directly responded. Instead, following 30 seconds of uncomfortable silence, another audience member, positioned with a microphone, asked his own, unrelated question.] Cole: [Making his way up the aisle to a seat nearer Mubina now, where he might whisper to her directly (as the audience's attention followed the microphones).] Hey, Mubina-maybe I can help. Mubina: Oh hi, Cole! Are you sure? But how? Cole: Maybe it would help things to be better received if I guest present with you. Mubina: That would be great! But this will require us to plan. Cole: Let us meet to discuss. Mubina: Yes, let us do so this week, since classes begin soon.
Since 2009, I have been responsible for leading an upper-level methods course geared toward helpi... more Since 2009, I have been responsible for leading an upper-level methods course geared toward helping senior elementary education majors develop a foundation for how they will bring social studies to life with their own students. By comparison with math, science, and language arts – as those subjects are each deliberately woven into the ELED program with two or more required courses (at least one relating to developing content mastery and understanding, another pedagogical with an explicit internship placement to assure each preservice intern will be afforded opportunities to practice planning, facilitating, and assessing subject-specific lessons) – ELED 365 offers the ONLY social studies education course elementary education majors take at all… and though it’s paired with an internship that semester, there’s no assurance that these placements will afford our interns any opportunity to observe, much less practice explicit social studies instruction. As one might imagine, it can feel like one has to swim mightily against the current to make the course as meaningful as it ought to be… to cram in as much as possible in spite of the less-than-ideal- conditions. Now imagine how much more complicated (or perhaps simplified) things need to become when the course-lead has to modify everything around two major surgeries he has to have during the school year: literally breaking each of his legs to reset/realign them. This presentation will explore the nature of redesigning curriculum to meet necessity’ needs and where/when such change may have led to improvement versus compromise. A blessing or a curse

Teaching elementary social studies methods is a passion of mine, but I find it is not always of i... more Teaching elementary social studies methods is a passion of mine, but I find it is not always of immediate interest to some of my elementary education majors, who may feel disconnected from one or more of the social sciences. Toward that end, two contemporary texts from pop culture - the film Pay it Forward and the tv series Kid Nation - have helped me bridge some potential gaps and the students have really responded well to each. I am curious how effectively each type of text and corresponding assignments do (and perhaps do not always) offer useful entry points for helping preservice teacher, novices in the field of social studies, come to embrace identities as inquiry-oriented social scientists ready to interact with and appreciate the world
