All I want is to be with you." What a way to begin, hmm? I suppose the question to be asked here is just who exactly is speaking. My first impulse is to say Leo. But that wall looks incredibly familiar. Chapter 38, yes? With that in mind the quote could easily be a Vincent quote, right? I'll remember that. But who really says it? Jack. HM. HMMM. What are these similarites, why you draw them. Sensei?

So in the fourth panel on page 4, there are black feathers surrounding Rufus. And since Dodo's ability is illusion, something in this situation is not really happening. Or someone is not really there. I wonder what. Or who. And what reason would he have for using his chain? I've kind of got Rufus on the same level as Break when I can't understand his actions. I just go ahead and assume he knows what the heck he's doing. It's always worked so far. I have no idea what the point was in injuring Sheryl and purposely leaving her alive. And obviously his relationship with the Baskervilles is one of those things where Sensei drops one or two hints to make you think you know, but she'll drop the real A-bomb on you later. And I really wish I had a clue what was going on in your head, Barma, but hey. You're not exactly the most talkative, though you are very strategic. So go on with your bad self, Ruf!

The reason why Break didn't care that Rufus had aligned himself with the Baskervilles is because Break knows that everyone has reasons for the things they do. And they don't always want to talk about it. I think Break understands, more than anyone, Oz's philosophy about good and evil, and it giudes his judgement. All this time Break has certainly not been proclaiming his true intentions, and even he tried to ally with the Baskervilles at one point. Two points, actually. He doesn't care that Rufus is trying to reach his objective, whatever that may be, he only cares that in order to get waht he wanted, Sheryl had to get hurt. And of course Break doesn't approve of that. And I feel the need to point out, once again, that even though Rufus had to attack Sheryl, he did leave her alive. If he had any real malicious intent toward her, or if he hadn't cared for her at all, he would have just killed her with that same apathetic expression on his face. Instead, he didn't do the full job, only what was necessary to achieve what he wanted. And he still hesitated to do even that.

I don't know why but I really like this scene between Gil and Alice. It was short, and all about Oz, but I dunno. It was nice to see, I guess.
Also, I can't stand the idea of Alice fighting Echo. Don't really get that one either... Just. *twitches*
Come now, Gilbert. Why so shocked? It's no surprise that Vince loves you so hard that he's willing to kill for you. What I am wondering at, though, is Gil's shocked expression when Vincent says it's all for him, and then the switch to the deadpan when Vincent drops the L-word. >_>

Because I'm preeety sure Gil already knew about the whole, "I'm doing it for you," thing, and he obviously already knew of Vince's *ahem* affections. That would explain the facial of, "Oh, you just had to pull that one out, didn't you?"
But I still don't get why Vincent's not-so-new reveal was such a big thing that Gil made that face. Because look here, Gil already knows that Vincent is up to something, he just didn't have anything to go on at the time. Now he does.

<strike>If it isn't obvious, my favorite character is Gilbert and I spend excessive amounts of time looking at his face.</strike>

Ahem. Sensei. What exactly was your motive for having Gil tackle his brother and straddle him on the ground while yelling a lecture 100 years overdue? I mean, I understand the lecture part but um. Yes. Mhmm. *clears throat* Well then. Comment on that if you will. Moving on.
o///o

EQUES. LOOKS. SO. COOL. I need that icon. Like now.

Sheryl's chain produces a thread that will lead her to Rufus always and forever? And it seemed to have been wrapped around the pinkie (as well as the hand). RED STRING OF FATE. So there. I really don't care if it's actually red or not. This ends it. RUFUS AND SHERYL ARE LEGIT AND MY HEART WILL GO ON.

Rufus knows you're following him. He knows. I'd put money on it. He's taking you somewhere. He wants you to follow. That happens to you a lot, doesn't it, Break? I don't really feel like drawing parallels, but if anyone would like to do my work for me, please do. *bows*
Also, Rufus took back the earring he had given Sheryl. Does this mean that the promise they made is now broken? Seems like it to me. Meaning that maybe Rufus is going along with the whole Tragedy deal. Once again, Barma. You have your reasons. I respect them, and I trust that you know what you're doing.
Ah, and the earring was also the key. Iiiinteresing, considering that Rufus was the one to have given it to her...

THE HELL SINCE WHEN DOES THE JABBERWOCK HAVE ARMS AND LEGS. O_O Y-you're really evolvin with that artwork, Sensei...

Random note: I had thought before that the change of clothes signaled a new stage in the series. And although I still definitely think that, you think maybe the more practical reason would be that Oz is a man now, and wears adult clothes?

We see more Oz putting on a brave face for Gil, which I love. To pieces. He does that quite often. I wonder why Gil doesn't say anything. ;w;
Before Oz goes off to fight Leo, he apologizes to Alice. What are you sorry for, Oz? For using her powers like you know she doesn't want you to? Something else? What?

OZ YOU LOOK SO BADASS HOLDING THAT SCYTHE LIKE THAT.

And his silhouette at the bottom of the page (24) looks... not quite like himself. I would like to attribute it to the fluttering of his clothes, but something just seems off about him there. Anybody else think so? He's always a bit different when he's using B-Rabbit's powers.

"We're just two people who met through someone called "Elliot." Oh... so this is all just grief. See how Leo distanced himself from Elliot's memory? And then later (I'm going to skip ahead), it wasn't until Oz mentioned Elliot and gave Leo a much-needed Elly!punch in the face, that Leo softened a bit. This is definitely one of the most touching scenes we've had so far. The fact that Leo and Oz were both crying made me want to cry too. As a matter of fact, it looked as if he was going to turn things around, and all he needed was Elliot.

BUT HE DIDN'T GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO TURN THINGS AROUND BECAUSE... DUN DUN DUNNNN
Friends, Fans, (Countrymen?), I regret to inform you that we have been mindfucked and trolled, once again, by the great and powerful Mochizuki Jun-Sensei.
JACK! JACK REALLY? WHAT FUCKERY IS THIS.

Moving backward a bit, it seems that Oz's seal has advanced again. Alice screams out not to let it move anymore, and Echo notes that Alice's
body has grown transparent. You know what this means? This means that the series is ending. It's almost over. Sensei is grabbing the rope to close the curtain as we speak. It means that Oz's seal has reached its finality. This is the last tick on the clock. If it moves any more, Oz and Alice will go hurtling into the Abyss.
I seriously doubt that they will be saved in time to avoid the Abyss. But I also doubt that the series will end with them going into the Abyss. They're gonna go there and shit's gonna go down, then there will be some kind of resolution and then the end.

Leo says, "I want to destroy it, to smash it, I can't stand it!" And what exactly is 'it'? What is he referring to? I suppose it doesn't make too much of a difference, considering how Oz responded, but you can never be too careful with Sensei.

Is it just me or does Lily in particular have something against Gil? Here, she'd rather stay and stop Gil than go to the seal like Lottie told her. Lottie is obviously the leader here, I might add. Also in chapter 55 Lily seeemed more angry about Raven than any of the others. I wonder if that means anything? Maybe it has something to do with whatever happened back before the Tragedy...

Am I the only one who misses Fang?
And let's not even talk about Elliot. ;A;

The other day, the brilliant gommyommy pointed out the most ingenious thing to me, and it explains everything. Gilbert is a Baskerville.
Vince says that if Gil were to remember everything, he would have to return to his responsibilities... [as a Baskerville].
The reason why he survived a fatal stab in the back? Baskerville.
The reason why he survived practically everything he's been through? Baskerville.
The voices in his head? Baskerville.
And it makes much more sense as to why he would be brainwashed by the old hag, who I still think is Miranda making use of her magic.
Becuase if Glen was Gil's master, then that would explain the need for absolute loyalty in the first place.

<strike>And look at Gil, taking bullets for his brother, getting stabbed for his master, protecting Oz "until the end" Well isn't he my little knight in shining armor :D</strike>
But oh my goodness, please don't tell me that Jack is powerful enough to actually tamper with people's memories. That's a very dangerous path, and I really don't swing that way. :/

Oh. Hello, Oz Vessalius. He even says "ore" and looks considerably more childlike and Oz-like in his expressions than any "Jack" has ever made.

So there, to all of you (including myself) who stuck with their theories that Oz was around before the Tragedy, you payoff is coming. Whether the appeal of the moon and stars was the cause or the mere fact that the night fit well with the mood of their goings on, who was to say. But whatever the reason, it was not until long after the sun had passed that the Head of the Baskerville house bid his own followers goodnight (or good morning, if you will).

Leo Baskerville walked with heavy feet down the long corridor leading to his chamber. Upon arriving, he wasted no time in discarding his heavy, bloodred cloak and changing into his nightclothes. He could just hear his bed calling him. Oh, he was exhausted. The time of preparation must be one of the busiest of all. Soon, the Baskervilles would make a very decisive move, so everything had to be perfect. Every detail precise; every obstacle prepared for.

And on top of that, Leo was a bit anxious for the next move. He knew what the end result would be, and what it would cost. He didn’t like it in the least; he had always been one to avoid the unpleasant. But what must be done must be done, he supposed. And it was for everyone’s benefit in the end. So it was okay, right?

But all that could wait until morning. Right then, what he needed was sleep. He slid wearily and rather unceremoniously into bed and closed his eyes. Finally, finally he could get some sleep. He could rest his body and mind and feel better in the morning.

Only a few moments later he opened his eyes again, but when he did, he was no longer lying down. There was no bed at all, in fact. He was no longer in his chamber. He was somewhere completely unfamiliar.

The room -- was it a room? -- he had found himself in was distictly divided, one side was only black, and the other was only the purest of whites. But in the middle, there was no line separating the two. It was impossible to determine where the light ended and the dark began, but somewhere in the middle, Leo was standing right in it. There was an exceptionally large black birdcage in the darkness -- or was the darkness inside the bircage? -- and in the light there was a white grand piano. Or perhaps the light was exuding from the piano. It was impossible to tell.

“Hey,” a voice said.

Where was it coming from, this voice? It sounded so familiar. It was deep, it was warm, it...

“Leo.”

...It called his name.

Oh, Leo knew that voice. He was certain, it couldn’t belong to anyone else.

He looked toward the piano, and there he was. Sitting on the bench in his school uniform was light itself. “Elliot?”

Elliot smiled at him. Leo hadn’t seen that smile in... he didn’t know how long it had been.

“What’s up?” he asked, and Leo was taken aback by the casualness of his tone. But then again, it was exactly like Elliot to say “What’s up?” as if they had seen each other just yesterday. As if they had bid each other goodnight just last evening and just this morning Leo had roused him from bed, promising that they would be late to class if he didn’t get up that instant. As if, just this morning, he had let Elliot sleep a few minutes longer, because he knew his friend had nightmares that frequently disturbed his sleep.

“Nothing, really,” he said shakily. Memories of those times brought a lump to his throat. He was thankful for his thick glasses, hiding the tears that welled in his eyes.

But hadn’t he stopped wearing glasses?

He was certain there was a pair in his bedside drawer, but he hadn’t worn glasses since Oz’s coming of age ceremony, so how were they currently on his face?

But Elliot just motioned him over to the piano bench, so he put the question of glasses aside and went over to him. It wasn’t the strangest of things in this place anyway (he was also wondering just how he had ended up back in his Lutwidge school uniform, which should be in his closet at the Nightray house).

“So how’s it going?” Elliot asked as he approached.

“Ah, it’s been alright.” Leo answered, taking a seat on the bench.

“No really. How’s it going.” He spoke with the air of one who already knew the answer to his question.

“What do you mean?”

Elliot rolled his eyes. “I mean, how’s it over there?” He jabbed a thumb in the direction of the blackness to his right.

Leo blinked. Over there? In all that darkness? “I still don’t understand.”

“Yeah? Me neither!”

At this point, Leo was beyond confused. He rubbed a hand over his eyes. “Elliot, please.”

“What!”

“You tell me!”

“That!” Elliot’s voice rose in pitch as he pointed once again to his right.

Leo took a deep breath. “Okay, what about it?”

“Well, what are you doing over there?”

Two black eyebrows rose above the rims of his glasses. “I’m over there?”

“Not right now you’re not.” Elliot raised his hands in frustration. “Ugh, you know what? Nevermind.”

Thank goodness. He hadn’t the slightest idea what Elliot was getting at, or what the dark mass on the other end of the room even was. A change of subject would be a great idea.

Elliot crossed his arms and leant back against the piano. “So how’s my brother doing?”

Gilbert? How was Gilbert doing? Leo didn’t know how to respond. “Well...” he began. He really had no clue how Gilbert was doing. “I haven’t really spoken to him.” That was true, right? He’d been rather... busy as of late. He hadn’t really spoken to anyone at all, other than the Baskervilles, Vincent, Echo and...

“What about the shrimp then?” Leo thought he detected the hint of an edge to Elliot’s voice. It was almost as if he knew. As if he knew that the “shrimp” in question was about to enter a very dangerous situation. And that Leo would be the one to put him there. And kill so many innocent people just as he caused the death of his own best friend. Did Elliot know?

Oh but that was nonsense. There was no way Elliot could know what he’d been up to. How could he possibly know? He couldn’t. But... did he? Did he know? What did he know? What would he think of it?

“You haven’t spoken to my brother and you haven’t seen the shrimp.” Was Elliot eyeing him suspiciously? “So what have you been up to then?” It was a casually phrased question, but Leo felt as if he were being interrogated.

I hold Elliot in very high esteem.

And it was true. There was no one he thought higher of than Elliot. So he didn’t want to tell him. What would he say in return? He didn’t want him to know. What if he knew already?

“Do you like it?” Elliot, apparently, was perfectly fine with recieving no answers. Perhaps his questions were rhetorical? “Your life? You like whatever it is you’ve been doing?”

Leo feared the questions that would follow if he were to remain silent. He feared the answers to those questions, whether Elliot demanded them or not. So he tried to stay vague. But how long would that last with Elliot? “It’s complicated.”

“How is it complicated?” Oh no. These were just the things Leo had been dreading. He really didn’t want to tell him. But why couldn’t he? He told everyone else his position and his plans (within reason; he obviously didn’t give out classified information) without hesitation. But Elliot... Elliot wouldn’t understand. That was it, right? Elliot wouldn’t understand... because he wasn’t the sort to... do... what Leo was doing...

“That’s... difficult to explain.”

“You mean you don’t want to explain.” Elliot fixed him with a look that pierced him straight through. “Okay then, I won’t force you.”

Leo let out a breath he didn’t know he had been holding. But he didn’t feel any more relieved. He still felt... heavy. He felt heavy, like his entire soul was being weighed down by a thousand bricks.

“That’s like you, though,” Elliot continued, “Complicating things. I swear you must have something against simplicity.” He shook his head. “But that’s the only part that’s like you. I still don’t know what you’re doing over there, but you don’t understand it yet so whatever. Just... All that,” he said, nudging his head in that direction, “the Leo I know isn’t all of that. He wouldn’t do any of those things.” He stood from the bench. “Not my Leo. My Leo would... Well. You should already know, so I won’t tell you.” And with that, Elliot turned and began walking off into the brightness.

The heavy, sickening feeling Leo had felt before was nothing compared to the fear and emptiness that descended on him as his friend walked away. “Elliot!” he screamed. “Elliot, come back!”

And then there was Elliot, sitting beside him on the bench once again. “What?” he asked pointedly.

“I... I’m sorry.”

Elliot gave him a look. One of those incredulous, signature “Elliot” looks. “Well don’t apologize to me! Are you kidding?” He stood up abruptly from the bench, towering over Leo in his frustration. “Apologies are for when there’s nothing left you can do! If you’re so sorry, make things right.” He closed his eyes and took an audibly deep breath, calming himself.

“I always thought you looked better without your glasses,” he continued after a time. “Your eyes are so beautiful.”

Leo hoped Elliot couldn’t see the way those same eyes widened behind his glasses, which had proven useful for the second time since the encounter began. But I'm sure that it's happened several times already. Now, don't tell me Oz actually believes this stuff he tells other people. I wonder if he even remembers that much about his past. I know he got some memories, but all? And how much about Elliot's death did The All-Knowing Rufus tell? Again, I'd assume all but... Oh that smells like a fic. *shot*

People close to Leo were mysteriously dying, the folks around the little village he lived in started to speculate... I assumed it has something to do with liking the elevation. Being both symbolically and literally above others... Now then, Sensei. What are you trying to tell us about Alice and Leo, hmm? How are they similar?
And look how he points his toes on the wall. How elegant.~ *shot* No one but me cares about pointed toes, lol.

Elliot.. ;w; Oh, this is heartbreaking. I-I can't take this anymore. *quits PH forever*

...

*comes running back*

He said everyone else told him that it was just a dream. As in, not just Elliot. Everyone. Leo must have told quite a few people about his adventures in the chasm. I wonder all of who knew about this, and how that's affected their actions. *cough*Duke Nightray*cough cough*

Okay, on page 21, hearing that everything that happened in the chasm was a dream, Leo reaches out and grabs Elliot's sleeve. Despite the crazed look in his eyes, I think he's reaching out to Elliot for support. Because he certainly needs support in this. He's confused and probably scared and again recognizing that he is so different from everyone else (even though those were Leo's words in narration, I believe he was telling Oz his thoughts at this time) and he needs Elliot to keep him sane.

All this time, he was able to keep Glen at bay, until Elliot was hurt, then he fell to Glen's influence. But after that time, until Elliot died, Leo again ignored Glen. But after Elliot's death Leo gave up the fight, accepting "Glen's" soul and his role as the leader of the Baskervilles. So how likely is it that it wasn't Leo thinking all the while that he was "strange", but Glen telling him so?

I really love how Elliot carries his sword with him all the time. Like being prepared to protect the Nightray household was the most important thing to him. I wonder if he valued his family's honor more or less than Leo... I guess I'd still say less, since his last words were an apology to Leo even though he was the one who, indadvertedly, destroyed the Nightrays.

"Sometimes our conversations don't mesh together." Now I have to wonder just how much HD was influencing Elliot. Apparently, it was doing more than just covering it's tracks in regards to HH incidents... What else did it mess with? And why?
We know that it changed Elliot's memory of the song. Perhaps that was because it was protecting Leo? Hiding his identity as the next "Glen" maybe?

Why are you broken, Leo honey?

You guys know what I always have to say about feathers.... and lookie there. *points*

Oh you heard about Fianna from Barma? Did you, Oz. Figures. RUFUS KNOWS ALL. I'M TELLING YOU GUYS.

Leo didn't want Yura to know about his friendship with Elliot, so he hid their connection and that was why he couldn't go. Go where? To live with Elly (Elly *sniff*)? That's what it seems like, but it doesn't make any sense.

Okay, THIS. Hello, Alice.

Tell me you see the similarities here.

Dude, when Leo makes his little announcement about Alyss, Echo looks so sad. I really, really feel for her right now. She seems like she wants to be on the other side so badly, but she has no choice because of Zwei and Vincent. Poor darling. *pets*
Btw, that should be some indication of what a good idea it would be to kill Alyss. I know Echo is in on all the Baskerville plans because of Zwei, but even still, understanding everything, she thinks it's a bad idea. We should be paying close attention to her from now on.

It seems like everyone has new clothes now! Does this symbolize a new stage in the series, Sensei? I think it does. Yup.

And Break you're up! Yay! <strike>Where's Reim?
</strike>

"Save Alice," she says. Save her. What sort of danger is Alice in, I wonder? What does Alyss know about what is to come that we don't? Now that's a question. And the answering of it, I believe, will mark the end of this series.

Whoa, right here (from page 31) what's that behind Break? It slightly resembles Mad Hatter, but Break didn't have Mad Hatter at the time. He only got Mad Hatter after joining Pandora, because that was his legal contract. So what is that shadowy thing?

And on the bottom right-hand corner of page 32.. are those rocks? What are they? And why are they there? And, once again, what is Sensei trying to say?

Oh I do not like seeing Leo in that robe.

At the bottom center of page 34, Leo very deliberately steps on a white feather. And what in the world does this one mean? It just screams "symbol" to me.

Are you telling me that the people who we always thought were the bad guys just might be the good guys after all? Damn. You go Sensei.
I've never really considered Glen or the Baskervilles as villains, just victims of circumstance and someone else's choices, like everyone else in this series. But now, NOW. Mochizuki Jun-sensei, I bow to you.

"I don't like brandishing the word justice... THere's no justice nor evil, only the wills of people." Um, excuse me, but I believe this may be the theme of the whole damn series. OZ. YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU. <strike>Sometimes I think, just for a fleeting moment, that I might love him even more than Gil.</strike> But then I banish that thought and huggle my imaginary Gilbert. But I do admire Oz to the ends of the earth, I'll tell you that. And this has only magnified it.

And then, on page 38, there is no longer a white feather beneath Leo's foot, but a black feather on the ground in front of his foot. ...Seeeennnnseeeeeeiiiii~ What do you meeeeaaaaannnnn???? I don't understaaaaaaaaaaand! D:

So Oz is part of what's making Alyss unstable? I wonder how, and all places this could go.

"By the Jabberwock's chain of conviction, I will judge you!" Everyone's got that? Okay, now check this out. OH. DANG. LEO. WHAT. ARE. YOU. I'm wondering if all of Glen's dark-winged birds possess the chain of conviction, if he was able to "bear" it too... But if that's the case, then Rufus and Gil also... (as well as either Sheryl or Shelly) have way more power than they realize at this point.

But what am I talking about? It's Rufus, of course he knows, what doesn't he know?!

Alright, this was too long. And messy. WET YOUR FACE MORE OFTEN.

"You should leave more work for your servant." Gil says. "Waking you up, helping you get dressed and stuff." ...Wait, what?! I know its typical servant stuff, but not when you're Gilbert Nightray. hduashfilf. Oh Gilbert.

<strike>I'm not going to quote everything. Probably just innuendo.</strike> And then Gil says, "Last night you couldn't seem to fall asleep. And then you woke up early this morning." Did he now? Let me ask you this: HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT, GIL? How do you know, not that Oz stayed up late, but that he had trouble falling asleep? That requires some pretty close watching, Gil. And from what vantage point was this? I need to know. I mean, I had assumed that they were sleeping in separate rooms... but apparently you never know with these two!!

Oz wants to be treated as an adult, but Gil just thinks it's cute. Okay, my heart just exploded into a million little tiny hearts that fly around my head. Can I have that fic now, please? If I wasn't buried under such a mountain, I'd write it myself. Maybe I'll take this to the kink meme...

"Hurry up, Papa!" "That name brings back [bad] memories!" You guys all remember that scene back in chapter 5, don't you?
Whether you do or not, I feel compelled to direct you to this video. It's short, don't worry.

Nice dress, Sharon. Very cute. Everyone's got new clothes now! Maybe it signifies a new stage in the storyline...?

That scene with Break and Sharon was adorable. Points for Sharon being a strong woman! I've really grown to love her. I didn't care for her at all at first, because she didn't seem important to me. Sensei wasn't giving us any significant information about her, so I figured she was just.... meh. And, I think it was in the Crown of Clown chapter, when she resolved to be strong for Break and for herself, that I started to like her. And it's grown ever since! :D And now she's giving the Red Eyed Ghost a talking to and a shoulder to lean on like a strong, sophisticated woman! :D

So uselessness is contagious? And Gil's spreading it around? Lol *snort* I-I mean, aw, everyone picks on my darling... *pats Gil* ):

Oz, why do you all of a sudden need to loosen your tie on page 18? When you talk about the seal... you know, the one on your chest... What does that have to do with your tie, hmm? Well, he has taken his clothes off to show Gil the seal before... And one of the times Gil took them off himself <strike>(he was too impatient to wait for Oz to do it. If Oz hadn't made that hurtful comment, maybe he would have gotten some)</strike>...
And then when Gil tells him to take it off (he's been trying to get Oz naked all day) Oz calls him a freak and refuses, like he hadn't been dropping some not-so-subtle hints with the loosening of his tie... As a matter of fact, in one of the translations I read, Oz went so far as to call Gil a pervert... <_<

And the way he's kneeling... it's very interesting because Gil's always the one who does the kneeling. ALWAYS. And now Oz is kneeling, and talking about something so important as the seal. I really don't know what could be happening here, but I keep getting the feeling that this image will mean something later.

And this whole scene with Alice sitting on the wall, does that remind anyone else of that one chapter where Gil tells about Oz's father-issues?

Speaking of which, let's talk about Alice. Up until veery recently, I did not like Alice. I loved her at the beginning because she was just so cool, and I love badass females. But then Sensei starts focusing on other characters and not Alice. And then she focuses on and gives characterization and depth to nearly everyone but Alice. I found this weird, since she was supposed to be the main heroine. Eventually I grew to believe that maybe Sensei had trolled us once again and that maybe Alice was only meant to be a plot-device, because that was all she was doing. So there was no reason for me to feel anything special for her; she just wasn't interesting. And then recently (I honestly can't remember what chapter started it), I started thinking that there just might be more to Alice than what Sensei had given us thus far... But I still didn't care for her. And then this chapter came out. And, tada! Thank you, Sensei! Thank you for giving us strong female characters who can hold their own and have lovely and deep (although belated) personalities! :D
So yes, Alice now interests me. Officially. And to celebrate, I went out and got myself an icon of her! Woohoo! Look! *points*

And, oh look! I know it wasn't Vincent's so it must be yours, Leo~. So.... What's your chain, and what else can it do?

Because of the way Sensei portrays it on page 29, I think that Leo was definitely not visible to anyone other than Oz. Actually, I think that Oz and Leo may have been in their own little... dimension? totally separate from the restaurant. But Oz's body was still in the restaurant. If that makes sense. Kind of like the way that Oz was literally in Alice's room in chapter 1, but at the same time he was still standing at Lacie's grave with Gil. This theory is still very shaky, I'm not sure if I support it 100% yet... I'll need more info from the next chapter. But I do know that Leo was using his chain to make that cool little magic trick.

And on page 30, Gil senses that something's up. Interesting.

"I've come for you" And then Sensei asks, "What hides within those words?" Sensei, are you explicitly telling me that that statement means something...? Let's discuss!

This chapter broke my heart, but what else is new?

Gah, every time we get a chapter that focuses on Vincent I end up loving him even more. Even when he's doing bad things! I can't help it. *hangs head in shame*

Oh dear, now Gil just has that much more to worry about...

We might as well start off on a light note, since this isn't a light-hearted chapter: lol at Vincent's face on pg6, when the Pandora agent poked him with his gun. Since ch60 ended with Vince in nearly that same pose, hand extended to Leo, this is a direct continuation. Not quite sure why it made me laugh, but I'm pretty sure it's the only laugh I'll get out of this chapter.

I have to wonder why Vince left that one guy alive when he killed the rest. I know he didn't just overlook him. He specifically wanted everyone back at HQ to find out about his chain. Has anyone? Because I would like to know where Sensei pulled this from. Of course it may just be her own genius, but she's tied chains and characters to AiW throughout the entire series, why break the pattern now?

"You still don't get it do you? How I managed to avoid being swallowed by the Abyss." Woah. Vince? What exactly do Demios, HD and Elliot have to do with your involvement in the Tragedy of Sabrie? And when exactly did you contract with this chain?

Return of Zwei! And she looks so cute!... Wait... what? I don't like Zwei. Never mind. Probably because she looks like Echo right now. :/ But I wonder why Vince swapped her out. And I'm not sure if it was ever confirmed that Echo can use Doldum, since no one ever said so, and we've never seen her use it. Maybe Vince just needed people controlled, so he pulled out Zwei. ),: And, going back to last month's discussion, I still don't know if Echo is in on Vincent's actions. She wasn't in any of his flashbacks this chapter; she wasn't in this chapter at all. She's never around when he does anything vicious... She may not have a clue. But I'm also not sure if maybe she watches life from the inside similar to Oz/Jack? If that was the case, then she definitely knows. And so I guess Vincent's reasons for using good!girl for good deeds and bad!girl for bad deeds would just be the fact that Echo might rebel? ...I think I just had a conversation with myself that led around in a circle. *facepalm* Sometimes I need to write things out in order to understand them. XD That's why I love doing these discussions. :)

Poor Leo can't even fathom why he would be the one to house Glen's soul. That being said, I do believe that both Glen and the other Baskervilles are chosen at or even before birth. <strike>I believe I've had this conversation before</strike>. But the thing about that is, Lily said that the Baskervilles were chosen by the Abyss, and, by extension, Alyss. Even though she said that they become Baskervilles when they receive the light, Lottie said that those chosen tend to warp the lives of those around them, and that had been happening since birth. So. But Alyss was born into this world at the same time that Alice was. And Alice was only a young girl at the time of the Tragedy. Certainly much younger than, say, Fang and Doug. And definitely much younger than Glen. So... unless Alice herself is a Baskerville, as someone (I can't remember who -- own up, smarticle one!) previously suggested.... No. That's the only way I can think of for everything to work together without any chinks in the reasoning. Unless someone else has an alternative idea?

"Those eyes see a grain/whatever you wanna call it of golden light that the others cannot see." And the way you hold your hands, Vince, makes it seem like you want to cover it up... Or possibly take it from him. Not forming any theories yet simply based on one image, but let's not forget that Vincent Nightray ALWAYS has his own agenda. He does things HIS way. Just putting that out there.

Woah, man. All up on him. Let's not talk about the super-squicky VinceLeo that just exploded on the kink meme... XD

*gaspeth* ...C-Could it be...? That, so many chapters ago (lol, I think it was only 3) when I predicted that those bubbles signaled something Abyss-related... I was right...? WOAH. I've been saying that a lot about this chapter. Anyhow, so all this time, when Sensei showed us the Abyss-bubbles, we were simply seeing in Leo-vision. And that's what Lily meant in chapter 51 when she mentioned seeing golden particles of light.

Also, that panel at the bottom of pg15 wins for being the most beautiful in this chapter. Okay. Funny how twice in a row, HD's contractor died before his seal had finished a rotation. Am I seeing a pattern? Maybe there's something special <strike>especially horrid</strike> about this chain?

Of course he was killing for Gil. And targeting him makes so much sense. And I never thought I'd get to this point but, I starting to seriously admire him after this chapter.

But on the top panel of pg31, Gil is staring at a dead body. With blood on his face. Could it be that Gil really is in on Vince's actions? <strike>Well, he's in on it now</strike>... but I meant all along. Normally when Sensei uses that sort of background it is for a flashback... What does Gilby know...?

pg34: Vincent... are you trying to clear Elly's good name?? <3 CDFEGRFDSERTGFDTYHJGYUKJHUKIJ NO! So that's that.

"You did it for your own self interests!" 'It's like looking in a mirror, so disgusting.' Oh really? I think that Vincent's trying to keep Miranda's secret about who caused the Tragedy was quite selfish, and nothing to do with Gil whatsoever. But now I think he is seeking redemption. After all, he got veeery emotional in this chapter. He seems quite invested in these concepts of loyalty, love, family and selfishness...

And he killed Duke Nightray because he was furious. Because of what he did. What he did reminded Vincent of himself. Which made him angry enough to kill the culprit. Who is just like himself. Vincent wants to die. How tortured. Poor thing. And then Elliot, the opposite of his father and brothers (including Vincent) was the one he admired. This scene with Elliot's last moments is the sweetest thing, I can't even tell you. Lol, I'm sure someone was absolutely disgusted. I just can't hate Vincent okay? How can anyone hate this child?

And I suppose that changing the past to erase his existence was why he contracted with that chain. Because simply committing suicide would hurt Gil.

Okay. Compare: middle panel on page 44, and this third panel from chapter 35. That panel on pg.44 reminded me of the one from chapter 35. This chapter was short but it was action-packed!

Sorry I haven't looked this over since I wrote it, I'll probably do it later, please excuse any typos. ^^'

Let's start with that gorgeous cover! Oz, Gil and Alice in mourning clothes surrounded by yellow flowers. Oz. Looks. Beautiful. Alice's face is covered, and Gilbert is completely turned away in addition to the majority of out view of him being blocked by the flowers. Those are the same flowers Sensei painted Oz with after the earthquake and tsunami, right? The ones that symbolize overcoming adversity (see this post)? They sure look like the exact same.

Gilbert's face is completely turned away. For some reason this makes me think that he will turn out to be the one most affected by this whole ordeal.

Oz is boldly looking directly in front of him. I think this symbolizes more growing up on his part: facing his problems head on (and overcoming adversity) rather than pretending that they aren't there like he used to do at the beginning of the series.

And Alice, I don't know.

"He and his beaming smile disappear into the light." Really. He's an illegal contractor, isn't he? Technically, he should be going to darkness. I think this quote has a double meaning. One being something regarding the Abyss, the other, more obvious one, being that he died in such an admirable way that it was almost a positive thing.

And the chapter is titled "Eggshell". I hope everyone's been paying attention to the titles, "Humpty Dumpty Sat On a Wall", "Humpty Dumpty Had a Great Fall", and now "Eggshell". In other words, he can't be put back together again. Meaning that Elliot isn't coming back. Sorry, guys.

Even Rufus looks stressed. This must be big. Even bigger than we already know right now.

Sharon implying that maybe the Baskervilles didn't want to kill Reim? I wonder why? I know that Lottie gave orders not to kill anyone, but are there other motives here?

Gil's creepy face on page 11: I think this was brought about by Sharon's identification of Oz as a negative force. Looks like a bit of the brainwashing if you ask me. She said, "Being with Oz will only add to your worries." This is true, but I think the reaction in the face was, "How dare you say something like that about my master." in his defense. Brainwashing. Definitely.

I think that, with Vincent, Elliot, worrying about Break (and Reim) and trying to be there for Oz, Gilbert is definitely too burdened right now (explaining his position on the cover). Poor thing needs to take a break with a blanket, a hug and some hot chocolate.

"My master still hasn't shed a single tear. How could I, as his servant, shed them?" Why this quote struck me, I don't know. But it's totally the line of the month.

Sharon got everyone else out using Eques while she (and mystery speaker, I couldn't tell who) found a way out of the burning building on their own? She didn't even think about herself there, not for one moment. I'm so proud of Sharon right now, all grown up <3 *sigh*

Oz has a new vest. And it's far too similar to the one Jack wore in chapter 57. The whole outfit isn't the same, only the vest. Sensei doesn't do stuff like that on accident (she doesn't do anything on accident). She's got to be trying to tell us something by having Oz and Jack wear the same clothes. And in this situation. What do you think it is?

"The sky is so beautiful. In spite of what happened, the sky is so clear. As if nothing was the matter, a new day arrives. This, and many other things, are strangely irritating." CAN WE GIVE OZ A ROUND OF APPLAUSE RIGHT NOW? RIGHT NOW? Here we have Oz, facing hardship and taking it as is. Not ignoring or "adapting" to it, but acknowledging that it's there and that he isn't quite ready to accept it. And that maybe the world should stop funcitoning for a little while becuase God dammit, Elliot is dead. And Oz is in mourning. He has very slowly been progressing since the start of the series but this is a huge turning point for him. I wouldn't hesitate to say that PH is a coming-of-age story of sorts, and Oz has just come of age. And it was at his coming-of-age ceremony too, interesting. Maybe that's why the first one was interrupted: because he wasn't ready. Yes I know there were specific plot reasons why the ceremony was interrupted, but I'm thinking more lit-analysis.

And I still don't know why the heck Alice bit his ear? I know she relates biting cheeks to making a person feel better, but if Sharon has been showing Alice books with ear-biting (which I doubt) I would have to raise an eyebrow at Sharon. Besides, Alice didn't just bite him. She bit him, ground her teeth in and kept them there until she drew blood. I'm not sure what the point was, but I think Alice's goal was to make Oz bleed. Especially since Sensei emphasized the single drop of blood ("will carve the way into his land" is how the rest of the prophesy goes, though I'm not sure if that is relevant). And oh look! I'm being a dork and analyzing PH again! :D
Well, for the most part I'm analyzing the relationships between Elliot & Leo and Oz & Gilbert. As far as I can see, they're so similar it's uncanny, for more reasons than just the master&servant relationship. Also, I had to scale the images a bit to conserve space and make them easier to compare, so they may look a little icky. ^^'

Okay! Let's start at the beginning, shall we?
When it all began~

I'm not the only one seeing the similarity in these images, right? Here we see the "moment we became friends" scenes. Oz / Elliot openly invites Gil / Leo into the friendship, and the other accepts. But eventually, it will be Gil / Leo who throws himself wholeheartedly into the friendship, doing anything and everything possible to keep the other by his side. Both of these involve killing, might I add.

-Gil attempted to kill Alice, and Leo caused Elliot to kill his entire family. Now, I know that the whole incident with Alice was the result of Gil being brainwashed, and he didn't go through with it because of his growing attachment to her and aversion to murder. But that doesn't take away from the fact that he very much wanted her dead, if it would save Oz. He just couldn't go through with it.

-Leo put Elliot in a position that would compromise his ideals; made him live in a way that he would hate to live. We haven't been told whether or not Leo was aware of the effects of Humpty Dumpty from the beginning, but if not, he certainly found out somewhere along the way, or he would have had no reason to apologize so profusely. He basically disregarded Elliot himself, because he had already grown so attached. He needed Elliot, so he did what he had to do to keep him. <strike>What he's going to do now, I'm not even sure if I want to know... what am I talking about? Of course I want to know!
</strike>
-Not to mention that both Gilbert and Leo were tormented by voices in their heads. Gilbert's "voice" was that of the hag who brainwashed him, this voice caused him to lash out at Break, attack Zai (twice!) and attempt to kill Alice. A voice from the past made him do bad things. Although the brainwashing is potent anywhere, it seems to be most effective in Sabrie, as we never saw a even a hint of it anywhere else, but suddenly it was far too much for him to handle once they visited the capital.

-Also in Sabrie (more specifically, in the chasm), Leo was suddenly bombarded with countless past Glens, trying to influence his actions. And the most recent Glen speaks to him and causes him to save (if you would call it that) Elliot, in turn killing many people. A voice from the past made him to bad things. And Glen said to him that Leo had been repeatedly rejecting his consciousness, but in the depths of Sabrie, he was no longer able to resist.

Hold on, Oz. You're going to do what? No matter what happens? No matter what it takes? Because this is who's job? A master's? And what was it that Elliot did again? Someone remind me.

-And he even did so at the expense of his family. Yes, he was under Humpty Dumpty's influence, but let's face it: he could have come out of it at any time. He just didn't. What it took was willpower. And my opinion is that deep down inside, Elliot did not want to admit to himself that what he did was wrong. It couldn't be wrong, because he did it to protect Leo, right? But it was still murder. And we all know the high value Elliot places on his morals. What he did was seriously wrong, even if he did it for the sake of someone important to him. However, in the end he did what he knew was right, even though it meant that he would lose his life and no longer be able to protect Leo.

-So far, Oz had performed no such actions, but that doesn't mean that he won't do so in the future. Oz wouldn't hesitate to protect Gilbert, and his life is in danger... This worries me, I'm more than anxious that Oz will share in Elliot's fate. Now, I'm not saying that Oz will definitely die at the end of the series just because Elliot did, but this makes it 10x more likely. Besides, Oz's death has been a definite possibility since the beginning of the series.
Note: if Oz does die, this doesn't mean that he will die the same way that Elliot did.

Let's complicate things further, shall we?

You're seeing this, right? Right?!!? Both of these images came from chapter 38, from Gil's memories in Sabrie. He was remembering his first meeting with Oz, then he turns a corner and sees a younger version of himself, which leads him to Jack, who reaches out to him in the same pose. Perhaps that's why GIl was making that face, eh? Now, folks, what does this mean?

This new development is painful for my brain, so I'm going to ask you guys to figure it out. I know you'll all have great ideas and you noticed things that I didn't. So together we'll figure this freaking complicated manga out.

We've always known that Oz = Jack. But now we know that Leo = Glen and Elliot is probably Lacie. Let's review the Pre-Sabrie story then. First Glen was in love with Lacie. Lacie died. Then Glen became extremely close with Jack. Glen attempted transfer his consciousness to Gilbert (meaning that Gil would have and should have been the next Glen, aka. in Leo's shoes), and then the Tragedy happened. I know I skipped many points, but this is what I want to look at right now. So here we have:

Oz = Jack ... Gil = Glen ... extremely close? Yes.
Leo = Glen ... Elliot = Lacie ... star-crossed? Ding ding ding!

But then you have to throw in the similarities between Oz and Gil's relationship and Elliot and Leo's relationship. And that is the part where my brain shuts down. Is anyone following this? Is somebody getting it? Because I'm not. Help! It's very possible that this is where the similarities end and there is no need to look further. That would make everything so much better and easier. But what about this series is good and easy? So... did anybody catch anything that I didn't notice?

<strike>It's also very possible that I'm reading too much into it with all of this. But look at all the evidence! I tend to read manga slowly because I don't want to get stuck in an arc that I don't have time to read all the way through. So I decided I'd only read the beginning. Four hours later I'd finished the thing. <strike>It wasn't very long, to be honest.
</strike>

I have to say, any manga that could keep me hooked for four hours straight is worth mentioning. But if he can't fall in love with them by the end of the week, he'll break up with them. And just like that, it's on to the next girl on Monday. He's the perfect boyfriend to whoever it is that he's currently dating, but it always ends with the week because he's just never able to fall in love. Of course, there's more to that point that I'm not telling you ;)
And then there's Shino Yuzuru (left). He looks like every girl's dream. <strike>He sure is my dream!</strike> Stoic, handsome, quiet. Cool. But that's only how he looks. In reality Yuzuru is outspoken, impulsive, highly opinionated, and not always agreeable. Lots of girls confess to him too, because he's so gorgeous and he looks so cool. So he gets a lot of girlfriends too. But they quickly find out that he's not so cool and that will be the end of that relationship.

Although Yuzuru and Seryou don't know each other well, Seryou's reputation proceeds him. On a certain Monday, the two just happen to find themselves in each other's company. So they get to talking, "So do you really date a new girl every week?" Upon finding that Seryou is still single, Yuzuru asks him out on a whim (since the conversation was there anyway). Just to see how the guy would react. And of course, Seryou took it seriously.
So they become a couple and the manga spans their week together. It was very interesting to watch the days go by and the tension grow as they began developing feeling for each other, because they both knew it was going to end soon. A relationship takes on a whole new meaning when you put a time limit on it. Sunday was just looming over their heads the entire time. It was awesome.

Overall, I have one complaint about this story: it wasn't long enough. The two volumes were adorable and I loved them to no end. But honestly, had Takari-sensei and Tachibana-sensei intended to make the manga longer rather than go on their day-by-day setup, they would have been able to better detail each day. TWO GUYS FELL IN LOVE IN SEVEN DAYS (less than, actually). What was there was great, but I feel like there could have been more. Also, I'm not satisfied with the way it ended. The story should have extended into the next week. The boys still had a lot of growing to do (not that they didn't grow throughout the story as well) and they still had obstacles to get over... We know over all how they ended up, (can you tell I'm trying not to spoil? <strike>Though it's pretty obvious how it ends</strike>) but I would have liked to see the rest of the journey there.

Even though I would have liked more, I still loved it. When I finished, I instantly wanted to go back and read it again. That hasn't happened to me since Pandora Hearts, so you know it's good. No, it isn't anything like PH. She doesn't want Gil, she's using him as bait to get to Oz, and figures she might as well have some fun while she's at it. Oz, with his hero-complex and undying love for Gilbert, storms in there without thinking the situation through because he knows that both Gilbert and his virtue are in danger. He unleashes B-Rabbit's powers and goes batshit crazy on Lottie, Lily, Zwei and Doug (no more Fang D8 ). He kicks their asses -- mainly focusing on Lottie -- but they manage to get away because Oz is not so keen on killing people. As they head off with their tails between their legs, Oz unties Gilbert, kisses him, and apologizes for taking so long. Gil makes a comment on his uselessness for getting himself captured to which Oz happily agrees, inducing much angry sputtering. He then orders Gilbert never to worry him again -- and then suddenly the scene will stop and take a time-out for an exhausted Oz to suddenly fall into Gil's arms. He'd been chanting Yura's demise for several chapters before actually killing him, but when it happened, it wasn't him to do it, it was Jack. And now Oz looks quite traumatized (guilty?) so I have to wonder just how much of all that talk was Oz and how much was Jack. And that would raise more questions about the extent of Jack's influence over Oz...

The sword protruding from Yura's body on page 3 resembles a grave, doesn't it? How fitting. And his silhouette makes him look almost like he's wearing a crown. Like a king... or maybe a Queen. Of Hearts. You know, from the Disney movie (not the book, in this case). Anyone else see the resemblance?

The memory on page 6 was from Oz's coming of age ceremony. And Oz says that he "did the same". I assume he is referring to Alice when she fought the Baskervilles. Perhaps he is beginning to realize that he is truly becoming B-Rabbit. The bond between him and Alice is only getting stronger as time passes, after all. And he's never been too comfortable with killing. Remember in Sabrie, he even went out of his way not to kill anyone...

Or maybe he is remembering something we haven't been made aware of yet. He does know what it looks like either way, because he saw Alice's memory of it, but what would that have to do with his guilt over killing...? I wonder~... What is exceptionally touching about this scene is that, through all of this, being manipulated, deceived and everything else, Elliot never lost who he was. <3

Though I'm not sure what the direct result of stabbing himself was. Or why he did it. I know there was a specific purpose, one that gave him (morally) an advantage over Humpty Dumpty, but I can't figure out what it is. I know it sounds weird to say, but it's so CLAMP. The artwork, for one, looks like a mesh between xxxHolic and Tokyo Babylon, which is interesting. One of the characters even slightly resembles Subaru, and another, Watanuki. The fighting (spellcasting) is also very much like Tokyo Babylon. But none of these similarities are enough to distract from the story. Although the story is still somewhat vague. Basically we are presented with <strike>Watanuki</strike> Takamoto, a high school boy who visits Kyoto for the first time from Tokyo. There he somehow runs into three people with fantastic -- magical? -- abilities (that apparently have no effect on him) and it's all downhill from there. Also there was Sakura the Cardcaptor who prevented the world's end, Sakura from TRC, one of the most powerful beings in CLAMPverse, and Seishirou Sakurazukamori, the <strike>awesome</strike> dangerous assassin (also from Tokyo Babylon). Elliot's entire motivation for killing his family was protecting Leo.

And kudos to everyone who predicted that Leo was the new Glen. ^^

I have a feeling that this will spell out some kind of confrontation between Oz and Leo somewhere along the line (you know, because of the Glen&Jack-ness)...

The children in the chasm at Sabrie had been impaled by something. I wonder why they were run through rather than slashed, beheaded, or anything else. And Elliot said that they were lying in a "puddle of blood"... Hold on now, isn't "Puddle of Blood" the title of this chapter? That has got to mean something.

Now, when Humpty Dumpty was approaching Leo on page 9, there was a little girl sitting above them on the ledge/whatever right by its mouth. That wasn't Helen though. Leo was still holding her. But some other random -- and very much alive -- little girl was just sitting there right next to it. Who was she? What is her purpose in being there? She obviously isn't the original contractor, that is soon to be Elliot, and you can't just trade chains. What's she doing up there?

It looks as if Humpty only impaled Elliot with his tongue, rather than cut off his head. Oh wait... *looks up* Perhaps that was what happened to the children as well? But I still have to wonder why he didn't use his signature move...

Who's hand grabbed Leo's shoulder on page 14? You could assume it to be Glen's, but that wrist looks decidedly feminine. Celia maybe? She was the previous Glen!Contractor...

Ah, and Leo didn't want to see because he didn't want to see Glen. MochiJun-sensei, I applaud you again. ^^ I'm suddenly noticing that Leo looks decidedly similar to Glen (note that all the other Glens had the same shaped silhouettes). So Leo grew out his hair so that he could avoid seeing who he was...

And if Leo is Glen, then that explains why his mind was unaffected by Doldum's strings the second time they went down there (chapter 38/39?)

Leo repeatedly told Glen to shut up. In Sabrie. Gilbert did the same when he was tormented by the voice/voices in his head as well, did he not? And this was In Sabrie... I'm not sure if it has any significance, I'm just making connections.

Something I especially love about this chapter were the images that were slowly revealed to us. We hand no idea what they meant at the time, but now we realize that they were bits and pieces of a flashback that Elliot was trying to bring to the surface. Oh MochiJun-sensei, I didn't think I could love you more, but I was wrong... <333

Wow, I wasn't expecting Elly's beloved Ernest to be so vicious. Gonna kill murder Gil and Vincent and blame it on the Head Hunter. But I have to wonder what in the world happened to Fred? He was the first to go. It seems like Elliot took no part in Fred's death like everyone else. So how did he die? That was blamed on the Head Hunter as well. I would hate to find that his death was Ernest and Claude's doings as well, but...

Time to draw a parallel! In the last chapter it was hinted to us that Glen had little social interaction outside of the Baskervilles and Jack. No one else really approved of him. Jack felt the need to show others Glen's more positive side, to show them that he is just like everyone else. And Leo has been more than shunned by the Nightrays. He has the other contractors (orphans and Elliot) and then he has Oz. Okay! Random tidbit! You guys can think about that one if you want.

For whatever reason, Ernest's facial expression on page 27 and 28 looks very similar to Vincent... I don't think that means anything. Just saying... <strike>Or is that just the standard evil face?</strike>

I am more than shocked at Vanessa's violence towards Leo. I can't imagine why it so surprised me, but it doesn't diminish my opinion of her in the slightest.

That panel in the top 1/2 of page 37 (Vanessa with Elliot standing behind / above her) is the most epically and beautifully horrible image ever.

Please tell me he isn't dying from the wounds he received in Sabrie. The nausea always took a few minutes to set in.

The boy couldn't have been any older than Oz, and Gilbert had ended his life, simply because he had been told. It was his assignment. The child was dangerous. He had to be eliminated. But there was a bright side: death on Earth would save him from life in the Abyss. Or that's what he had been told.

Normally, the worst part of carrying out an assassination was getting rid of the body. Collecting the remains of the life he destroyed almost always resulted in the loss of his lunch. But this time, there had been no need to dispose of any bodies: the Abyss had taken care of that.

Gilbert heaved again as the bright purple light of the Abyss flashed before his mind's eye. At the very least, there had been no screams of terror. There was only silence as the ground lit up and the corpse was dragged into the Abyss, pulled in by his chain. Not even Oz or the stupid rabbit had made a sound. Gilbert had felt small hands grip his sleeve, but was unable to tear his gaze away to meet the surely terrified eyes.

It is a known fact that one always feels better after throwing up, but Gilbert didn't believe it. He clutched at his sides and shuddered as the pain continued to engulf him.

* * * * *

Certainly Oz was able to tell when something was bothering Gilbert. As a best friend and master, it was among the least of his duties. A greater of these was comfort. He had watched him nervously in the carriage, but knew that Gilbert wouldn't want to talk in front of Alice. So he followed him outside upon their arrival, but quickly fell behind and lost sight of his quick-paced servant.

It was obvious that Gilbert was shaken by this particular mission, but only once had Oz seen him this upset.

"My movements are so unstable, I can barely stand anymore." (2)

He had run away that time too. Oz wondered just how much of Gilbert's reaction was brought about by his memories and how much was the mere concept of murder. He couldn't picture Gilbert being comfortable with death in any case, - especially when it came to killing people himself - although he so often feigned apathy. Oz often marveled at his strength. But was it really?

"There was nothing to be done. Not by me, and not by you." (3)

How many times had Gil put on a brave face for him? Oz had no doubt that the mask was off as he finally found Gilbert, doubled over at the edge of a clearing.

"Gil," he whispered, kneeling beside the man. Gilbert didn't acknowledge his presence, but his shaking lessened at the feel of Oz's hand on his shoulder.

Oz rubbed small circles on Gilbert's back as his companion continued to heave, despite the fact that there was nothing left to disgorge. Eventually Gilbert calmed and shifted backward to sit cross-legged, still not meeting Oz's eyes. Oz sat in the same way facing him. He scooted forward so that their knees were almost touching and leaned his chin on one hand. He figured that he would still be safe at this proximity: since Gilbert had just been dry-heaving, there was nothing left in his stomach to discard.

"You should get some water," Oz said. Gilbert nodded, but made no move of getting up. Oz lifted his other hand and weaved it into Gilbert's hair, as he so often did when the man was distraught over something. Gilbert looked up at him and was met with a small smile. He didn't return it, though he did slightly lean into the touch.

"I'm not a murderer, Oz... But I... I am." Oz was more than confused by this statement, so he waited for his friend to elaborate.

"I've already killed so many people. Heartlessly. I should be used to it by now. But, every time..."

Oz slid his hand out of Gilbert's hair to smack him on the forehead with the back of his hand. "Well obviously you're not heartless, if it makes you so upset. And of course you won't get used to it, you're not some killer, you're Gil. You're the same Gil I've always known."

"Oz, I've already told you I changed -"

"For goodness' sake, Gil! Didn't we have this conversation a long time ago? Yes, things change. Time passes and situations change. People change. But that doesn't mean they become new people altogether."

Oz reached up once again and pinched Gilbert's cheek. "You'll always be Gil." Gilbert responded with only mild irritation: not a good sign. It meant that he was still bothered by this.

They sat for a few moments, but Oz still felt as if he hadn't addressed the full issue. He had to choose his words carefully. "Listen, Gil, killing people is not a good thing. But what you're doing... You're doing what you have to. And... I'm proud of you for that." This time when Oz ruffled his hair, Gilbert scrambled to grab his hands and held them down between them.

"Oz!" he yelped, an exasperated blush coloring his features. Much better.

Oz laughed at his friend's antics and scooted over to sit beside him, leaning on his shoulder. The two lapsed into a comfortable silence as they sat, each lost in their own thoughts.

Emerging from his reverie after a few minutes, Oz turned to look at his friend. Gilbert was hunched over slightly, staring at the ground. Oz reached up and mussed up his hair once more for good measure.

"Oz, stop it!"

"Quit whining," Oz said, still not removing his hands from Gilbert's hair. "It's not like seaweed needs to be orderly anyway."

Gilbert responded with several muted noises that could possibly be interpreted as whining.

Oz noticed this disobedience (cute as it was), but decided to overlook it in favor of another detail. He laughed. "You sound just like you did when you were fourteen!"

... ... ...

(1) Picture the place where Oz and Gil sat during the omake when he tried to quit smoking.

(2) This is a quote from chapter 35 of the manga. It takes place right after Gil tried to kill Alice.

(3) This one's from chapter 6, when Oz was upset about the death of the flower girl.

* * * * *

-TotalAlias-
urn:lj:livejournal.com:atom1:total_alias:8571
@attributes":
{"@attributes":
[{"@attributes":
szs"}},{"@attributes":
maid sama!"}},{"@attributes":
pandora hearts"}},{"@attributes":
tmohs"}},{"@attributes":
durarara!!"}},{"@attributes":
meme"}},{"@attributes":
07ghost"}},{"@attributes":
kimi ni todoke"}},{"@attributes":
xxxholic"}},{"@attributes":
tsubasa"}},{"@attributes":
ccs
Got this from gommyommy and phoenix089 (they both posted it at almost the same time). List fifteen of your favorite characters from different fandoms, and ask people to spot patterns in your choices, and if they're so inclined, to draw conclusions about you based on the patterns they've spotted.

I’m using anime and manga, because if I used books, you’d get people like Holden Caulfield, and Tom Sawyer, and Mr. Jaggers, and.... ;D Let's just say... Only things that struck me as odd or confusing or that might have some kind of significance later on in the series (with the exception of one or two things like Gil's seaweed-makeover).

So here we go!

Let's start with Gil's makeover~~~ I don't know if that got scanlated but oh my god. LMAO. Yakuza? BALD?? Tehe, and Oz and Break's faces were hilarious. Personally though, I love the seaweed <3

It's a good thing that "time is vague", Gil, because I'm pretty sure it's been more than 10 minutes. MochiJun-sensei slowed down the clock for him, for sure.

And Break says, "Eat the soul" What the hell does that mean? Somebody care to enlighten me? Whenever somebody says soul I normally think of Jack and Glen... Yeah... and I still have no clue.

"Could you possibly be related to the girl called “Alice” who was killed by someone in the midst of the Tragedy of Sablier" How on Earth does Creeper know about Alice??? We all know he's a Jack fanboy, but wasn't she locked in a tower? That's a bad thing. No way would Glen broadcast that -- or anything he was doing -- to the public So no one should know about her, right?

Alice just said she doesn't remember her death, but she remembers Jack... interesting... Anybody wanna interpret this?? I'm assuming it's just because she hasn't gotten that memory back.

Oz is acting the same way that he was in Cheshire's dimension. Except that time he said he would destroy everything that scared her. This time it's "everything that hurts you" which to me sounds so, so much like Gilbert. Let's take a looksie at chapter 35 shall we? Gil's words were, "Anyone that harms my master". Sounds pretty similar to me. And both of those attempts (in Cheshire's and in Sabrie) ended in an attempt to kill Alice. I'm really starting to wonder about this, Oz. We know that Gil was brainwashed, but you...? What happened to you?

"Snakeface"... Very fitting... I like it! I think I'll start calling him that now...

"All time is vague" Pfft, whatever. That idiot Snakeface just rand out of time or forgot about the time and was trying to cover it up. :|

When Mama Nightray said that Elliot had been punished, I originally thought she was referring to the slap (twice in one night, I must add, Elly) but now that I look again I'm thinking that she might be referring to the pain that Elliot felt in his chest after the "Boom". Obviously this was his seal moving. But that would mean that Mama Nightray knows that Elly is an illegal contractor. Maybe because of the lies Snakeface told her about the Abyss being a paradise? But then why would that be a punishment for his seal to move? This needs to be a discussion topic, guys.

I really like how it switches off between showing Jack and showing Oz, even though we know it is Jack in Oz's body. It makes it feel more real.

"The miracle of the black light swallowing up the city!" I thought Yura didn't believe the lies he told his followers?? Either way he seems to be morbidly obsessed with death and destruction... and Jack... so he's still insane in my book.

Glen said that the Abyss used to be a beautiful world? Oh did he now? Is that where Creeper got the idea? But the key words are "used to be" we all know that the Abyss isn't like that now. But what I want to know is whether or not there may be some kind of connection between Yura and Glen...

"This must be hard for you (Alice)" Um... why? For some reason he means something other than Oz stealing her powers...

And that was the end of Isla Yura: Snakeface. GOODBYE CREEPER!! 8D <strike>you had better not be messing with us this time, MochiJun-sensei. Yura had better be dead. And he had better not ever come back!!</strike>

Aw, Glen napping with a birdie on his head! <3 I never thought he'd be so tame! Maybe that's why he and Jack are friends <33

So Humpty Dumpty is searching for the soul then... Which makes sense as to why it was around at Riatsu's place where the first seal was. And here where the second seal is.

Now, if you read closely, you'll notice that Elliot said he hated the source of the existence that has destroyed the Nightrays (not exact phrasing). And that it is the root of all evil... that is Glen Baskerville, yes? I wonder how much he knows. As far as his consciousness extends, shouldn't HH be the problem? But Elly wants whatever caused the problem that was HH. I think there are many things he knows but is not aware of, probably from the influence of Humpty Dumpty.

Funny how the scenes of Elliot stabbing his mother and Elliot stabbing Claude and Ernest are so similar? What is MochiJun-sensei trying to tell us, hm? Obviously the situations were different, but maybe the motivation was the same? In chapter 50 Elliot said that his siblings didn't approve of him taking in Leo as a servant. Mama Nightray was about to stab Leo. All three of them ended up dead at Elliot's hand. And oh look, there's Leo, apologizing. The eyebrow is raised, folks.

Now, Papa Nightray also did not approve of Leo. And then suddenly after they took a trip down to the chasm (whatever) in Sabrie he suddenly lets up. They went to where the power of the Abyss is strong and then...?

Also interesting is that Fred was never shown. Elliot said that his siblings did not approve, and then we saw Claude and Ernest. I'm sure we either forgot about him or assumed that he was already dead. Or was he? What happened to Fred? And when??? I wonder if he had any connection to Leo. I wonder if Elliot killed him? Or was he just a catalyst to get this whole HH thing going? It was implied that he was the first victim, after all.

Note how Vanessa was not mentioned among those who disapproved of Leo. Also note how, then though she died, Elliot did not stab her before she lost her head like all the rest.

But why is Papa Nightray still alive then?! ...Maybe because he's working with Yura and helped to set all this up?

Oh, so Elliot was not seeing Glen's memories of the Tragedy, he was having premonitions of this moment. And Leo composed Lacie. Making it extremely likely that he is Glen instead of Elliot. "It just popped into my head pre-made!" Did it now? Didn't Glen say that the new Glen receives the memories of the old???

Ah, and Elliot's Humpty is white, meaning that he is the original contractor. And holy crap his seal is already 3/4 full! D8 Hm, let's say 1/4 empty instead so that I don't get so depressed by this. I love Elliot... *sniff*

Now who is speaking to Elliot about "make yourself forget"? That"s a question. People with voices in their heads? Sounds a lot like Gilbert, again. And there's a struggle. External that looks internal, again. Poor Elly with his moral conscious wants to know what's going on, but that voice won't let him. Whose voice is that?

And Leo says "Say the name" once again. There's a bit of confusion as to whether it is "the" or "my" but I have several (soemwhat) Japanese-speaking friends who have said that "the" was more accurate. So several beats one in my book. I've only seen it as "my" in TBA's scanlation. And if it is in fact, "the", it means that this could have something to do with a chain. Oz had to call out Alice's name to form a contract with her. He also called out her name when he nullified her powers. Break had to call out Alyss' name in order for her to listen to his request to change the past. So the name is very important here. And we have yet to hear Elliot call out anyone's name (that doesn't mean that he hasn't and we just weren't shown that part). So look out for Elly calling someone/something's name. It'll mean something.

Now let's talk about the final page~ Alright guys, I've heard a lot of people freaking out over this cliffhanger-y ending. But calm yourselves. Elliot isn't dead. Or injured. That was a flashback. For one thing, the image is grayed, like the other flashbacks. And two, look at his clothes. That's exactly what he was wearing in Sabrie in chapters 36 and 39-41. Remember that Elliot and Leo were attacked by Lottie and Zwei while they were in the big hole-thingy. Leo's body was controlled by Doldum, but not his mind. After a small bit of struggle, Lottie told them that Oz & Co. was already ahead of them. And then the scene was cut. The next time we saw Elliot he was already meeting Oz who had finished with Jack's (his?) memories. So we don't know what happened in between. This is definitely when the flashback must have occurred.

Also in that image, Leo looked like he very much owed a certain someone an "apology"... Look at him. He might as well be saying, "What have I done?!" However, I'm not saying for sure that Leo was the one to hurt Elliot. But it might be something along the lines of not being able to stop this from happening...

Another thought: to break a contract all you have to do is kill the chain right? Years later, Gilbert uses this memory to influence an important decision.

***

-What Brothers Are For-

Elliot Nightray ran in random circles around the Nightray courtyard, waving his arms in the afternoon sun. Without warning he stopped and stood perfectly still. He clenched his fists as he gathered his wits and summoned his secret weapon: “Raven!”

And then he was in motion again. “Caw! Caw!” he cried, flapping his wings this time. But soon after he became Raven, he transformed back into Elliot, running back to his original spot. “Get ‘em, Raven!” Elliot shouted, pointing at the bad guy a few feet away.

‘Raven’ did just that. Surging forward, he tackled the villain to the ground. The captured enemy was enveloped in black wings as Elliot once again appeared. His pose could be described as nothing short of epic as Raven vanished, leaving Elliot to loom over the evil one. “You’re under arrest,” he said. “What do you have to say for yourself?”

“...”

“Ha. That’s no excuse for breaking the law.”

“...”

“Maybe you should have thought of that first.”

“...”

“Whatever. Backup from Pandora will be here soon. You just stay where you are,” Elliot commanded as he tied the man up.

Soon enough, Pandora arrived to take the criminal into custody. Once all of that had been taken care of, Elliot congratulated himself and his chain for a job well done. “Success!” he exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air. “As expected of the amazing team: Elliot and Raven! Fighting the bad guys and kicking their butts!” He fell backward into the grass with a satisfied sigh.

Catching his breath, the boy felt a pair of eyes upon him. He didn’t quite like being watched. So he got up and walked over to the other boy sitting in a chair by the door.

Gilbert looked up from his book as he heard Elliot’s approach. Originally he had been reading Holy Knight, but with Elliot was making so much noise, Gilbert gave up reading and just watched him play. The kid looked like he was having a lot of fun, running around and yelling stuff. He slightly reminded Gilbert of a younger Oz, with his bright eyes and even brighter smile. Gilbert missed him, but it wasn’t too bad. He had been missing Oz all day, but happy memories made it hurt less.

“Your name’s Gilbert, right?” Elliot asked, interrupting his thoughts. Gilbert nodded.

“And you know my name’s Elliot, right?”

He nodded again. He’d only been with the Nightrays for a few days, but he certainly knew the name of the youngest son of the house.

“Okay, so um...” Elliot looked down at his shoes. “You wanna... um... you wanna play with me?”

Play with him? This noble kid wanted Gilbert to play with him? “Me?”

Elliot’s face fell flat, “Well there’s no one else here.”

Gilbert blushed, embarrassed with his obvious question. Why on Earth would Elliot want to play with him? “H-how come you’re not playing with your brothers?” That’s what he normally did.

“They’re busy working or something.” Elliot’s voice dropped and he began to mumble, “It’s cool that they’re protecting the family and all, but why can’t they do that at home more*?” His voice brightened up again, “Vanessa can’t play anything. And you’re already out here.”

Gilbert didn’t exactly feel like playing, but it wouldn’t hurt anyone. He might as well humor the boy. “O-okay. What are you playing?”

“Well, I was playing ‘Contractor’. But I’m tired of that game. I’m not gonna contract Raven anyway.”

“Why not?” Gilbert asked timidly.

“Cause I’m youngest. Ernest is gonna get Raven before I’m big enough.” Elliot paused, pondering his next statement, “It’s okay... As long as it’s a Nightray protecting everyone. Well, everybody else can help too, but Nightrays do it best!” he said with a beaming smile. “I know Ernest, he’ll do good.” And that was the end of that. “So what should we play now...?” Gilbert watched him tap his jaw with his forefinger in thought, the way Ernest often did.

“Hmm... What to play... I know! Let’s play ‘runaway train’!” Elliot grabbed Gilbert’s arm and dragged him out to the middle of the grass. But once they got there, Elliot ran away from him to the other end of the courtyard. Gilbert hadn’t the slightest idea what he was supposed to do, so he just stood and watched as Elliot pushed the invisible buttons and flipped the invisible switches that surrounded him. The younger boy tugged twice on a rope that was supposedly above his head, and the game began.

“Woo woooooo! Here we go, boys! We won’t stop ‘till we reach Reveille!” He ran around the yard in his train for a few moments, but upon noticing Gilbert -- again -- he stopped. “Gilbert, what are you doing?”

“What am I supposed to do?”

“Whatever you want for now... Haven’t you played this game before?”

“No.”

“Oh. That’s okay, the disaster’s about to start anyway.”

“D-disaster?”

“Oh no! There’s a damsel tied to the tracks!”

Gilbert looked toward where Elliot was pointing. He, of course, saw no damsel. And he still didn’t know what sort of role he was supposed to be playing. Elliot cleared his throat, “Ahem, Gilbert! There’s a damsel tied to the tracks!”

Elliot seemed to be growing impatient, and Gilbert, in a moment of panic and confusion (the train was hurtling toward him, after all), scrambled to the ground and lay down on the ‘tracks’.

At this, the smaller boy had no choice but to pause the game. “Gilbert?”

“Y-yes?”

“You’re a boy! Don’t be the damsel! Save the damsel!” Gilbert felt sheepish. He should have known better, but whenever he played with Oz, he had always been the one in distress.

“Okay!” Gil shouted back from the train tracks. He knelt beside the poor girl and set to work untying her with expert fingers.

“Hurry, Gilbert, hurry!” Elliot called, “The train’s coming! I can’t stop it!"

“I’ve almost got it!” Gil shouted, working on the last knot.

“Here it comes!” Elliot said, quickly approaching them. But Gil managed to free the young woman and the two of them avoided the coming train in the nick of time. He felt the wind rush past his face as Elliot hurtled by them.

But the game wasn’t over yet. “It’s gonna crash!” Elliot turned around and screamed at them from his spot in the conductor’s seat. “I have to jump!”

“Jump!” Gil encouraged. The damsel cheered him on as well.

“Here I gooooooooo!” Elliot jumped from his runaway train and tumbled into the grass, his crew landing safely behind him. There wasn’t a scratch on any of them, of course. He took a few seconds to recover and then stood and walked over to Gil and the girl. “That was close,” he laughed, wiping the sweat from his brow.

“Yeah.”

“Nice job, Gilbert. I don’t know what I would have done if somebody had been hurt because of me.”

***

Gilbert rolled over in his massive bed. Perhaps lying on his back would work, he wasn’t getting any sleep on his side. He threw his arm over his eyes and groaned quietly. He didn’t know what to do. He knew it was pathetic, but he rarely had this problem before: indecisiveness. His whole life had revolved around Oz up till now. His priorities had been all sorted out long ago: wait for Oz, save Oz, bring Oz back.

But this had nothing to do with Oz. This was something he had to decide for himself. It was overwhelming, and Gilbert felt somewhat helpless.

If he went through with this, wouldn’t it make him just like Ernest, Claude, and Fred? Abandoning the family in hopes of saving it, leaving them to fend for themselves? The only difference was that, unlike them, Gilbert would live. He had to, he had a purpose and a goal to reach. So he wouldn’t die, but someone might get hurt if they were near him when trouble struck. On the other hand, how would everyone fare without him? Without the older brothers dead and him gone, how would Vincent and Elliot defend themselves? What he needed to know was who was in more danger: him or them?

Gilbert liked to think of positive things when he was upset. Fond memories helped the best. They reminded him that no matter what shape his life was in currently, there was some happiness in it. And if he had been happy once, he would be happy again in time. Tonight he had remembered Oz, naturally. He remembered Oz, Ada, Oscar, and Oz again. He hadn’t expected to recall anything else. So he was surprised to catch his mind drifting back to another occurrence.

I know! Let’s play ‘runaway train’!

Without a doubt a happy memory, but shocking nonetheless. This had come out of the darkest period of his life. It was in the beginning, when loss and loneliness hurt the most. He had almost forgotten it. How fitting that it would return to him now, so relevant to his dilemma.

They’re protecting the family, but why can’t they do that at home?

Someone softly rapped on the door. At this time of night? He sat up. “Come in.”

The door opened slowly and Elliot entered the room, dressed in his nightgown. He closed the door gently behind him. “Hey, uh, Gilbert... So I had, um... I had this dream...”

Gilbert needed no further persuasion to scoot over to the other side of the bed. Elliot’s screams from down the hall had woken him more than once, and his nightmares had been growing more frequent as of late. There had been no screams tonight, but he was certainly spooked. Gilbert wanted to ask about it, but it wasn’t his place to pry. He wouldn’t know how to ask anyway. So he kept his mouth shut and just patted the space beside him on the bed.

As Elliot approached him, Gilbert noticed that his face was much paler than usual. The poor boy looked exhausted and wide awake at the same time.

“I’m not getting under the sheet,” Elliot said, pushing back some of the covers.

Gilbert scoffed and lay back down as Elliot climbed in beside him and rolled over to face the opposite wall.

But just before he turned his back, Gilbert finally got a good look into his eyes. The icy blue just wasn’t the same as before. Where had the light gone? The light that coaxed Gil into having fun all those years ago?

Did it leave with his brothers? Had they still been here, Elliot would have surely taken refuge with one of them, rather than Gilbert. He watched the boy’s back through the darkness. This tragedy took its toll on everyone, but it hit Elliot the hardest. His brothers were dead, his mother was mad, and Elliot was still here -- on Earth, in reality, and in this room -- and he needed help. Gilbert had to help him, to protect him. He couldn’t be the damsel.

Poison. That’s what Vince told him. Gilbert wondered how Vincent was the only one who hadn’t been targeted, but then again, that didn’t mean that it wouldn’t happen soon. Vincent was safe for now, but Elliot... Elliot was in more danger than anyone else. Fred, Claude, and Ernest had been brutally murdered, leaving Elliot as the Nightray heir. Whoever was killing his family would surely come after him as well. So Gilbert needed to be here to protect him, right?

Or maybe... maybe Elliot wasn’t the next target. Everyone else had been dispatched swiftly and silently, around the same time. The thought made Gilbert’s skin crawl, but wouldn’t Elliot be dead already if they intended for him to die?

I don’t know what I would have done if someone had been hurt because of me.

Gilbert, on the other hand, would certainly be attacked again. He knew it. The first trial had been unsuccessful, so the killer would use a different method. Gilbert didn’t want Elliot or Vincent to be there when his life was put in danger. He didn’t want anyone to be there. He didn’t want anyone to get caught in the crossfire. He knew what he had to do.

“Gilbert?”

“Yeah?"

“...Thank you.”

Gil reached over and patted Elliot’s shoulder. “What are brothers for?”

***

Gilbert made his decision and was successful. He managed to protect his brothers from afar as well as himself. And better still, his master returned. He’d accomplished everything he’d set out to do and was happy again.

But a more accurate statement would be that he was only happy in general, because currently, his head was throbbing. The remnants of a hangover hung about him as he sank down next to Oz on the sofa.

Gilbert listened as best he could through his headache as Oz retold all that he had missed during their recent visit to Ada’s school. He couldn’t believe so much had taken place in his absence, but reminded himself that there was one event in particular that he had been present for. He remembered it all very clearly. Oz had attempted to stomp on his head for spoiling his “dramatic moment” and Elliot had yelled at him and tried to slash him with a sword. Elliot. Gil was thrilled at being reunited with his brother, but Elliot had only seemed angry. Very angry.

He hadn’t expected it at all, but it made sense. Of course Elliot was upset with him for leaving. Elliot had suffered alone, without any brothers to help him. Because all his brothers had left. Most of them died, and the only one that didn’t never came back. After that, he could never be the same happy child he used to be.

Gilbert left when Elliot needed him, and that must have hurt. Maybe he really was just like Ernest, Fred and Claude. Had his decision really brought success?

Gilbert’s attention was reigned back in near the end of Oz’s story. There was something about the way Elliot reacted to Oz’s selflessness that forced the raven to rethink himself. From what Gilbert had gathered, Elliot’s actions were aggressive, but his reasoning was sound. He had seen past the guise of selflessness and stripped it down to its basic elements: fear and self-interest. It takes more than sagacity to reach such understanding. What is required is experience, and that experience will continue to shape his decisions for the rest of his life.

Hearing just how strong his brother had become, Gil hadn’t a doubt in his mind that his actions had been for the best.

"}]}
