INLAND - Supporting Canadian Fashion Design

Interested in fashion? Want to support the Canadian fashion design industry? There's an awesome show coming up in September!

(my roommate is involved with this through her company, Ansere - her stuff is gorgeous and I heartily recommend checking it out!)

SEPTEMBER 6 + 7, 2014
Saturday 11-6 Sunday 11-5
www.madeinland.ca
99 SUDBURY ST. TORONTO
Tickets:
$8 Through INDIEGOGO
$10 Advance online
$12 Cash at the door.

2 DAYS 80 CANADIAN FASHION DESIGNERS 1 VENUE

Founded by Sarah Power, graduate of George Brown’s Fashion Design program and former coordinator for
The Clothing Show, INLAND is small-business start-up designed to “elevate the profile of high-quality,
independent apparel and accessory design, made-in-Canada”.

Selected designers will set up their mini-boutique booths within the 10,000 sq.ft, brick and beam space at 99
SUDBURY, just off Queen Street West in the heart of Toronto’s design district, to form a unique, multi-brand
“pop-up” like no other in Canada. Connecting shoppers directly with designers, INLAND is a contemporary retail event providing a stylish, socially and ethically conscious, small business-supporting alternative to the mall.

INLAND fills the gap between local craft-markets and high-brow fashion events by providing a sophisitcated,
casual shopping experience focused on quality, personal style and the promotion of made-in-Canada. INLAND is
more than just shopping. Guests can enjoy a cocktail on the patio, have their custom measurements taken, get a
sewing lessons, and more, at one of the several Style +Design Stations hosted by local entrepreneurs.
INLAND is a NEW 2-day curated shopping event featuring 80 independent Canadian designers of clothing
and accessories for men and women. All collections are made-in-Canada.
igg.me/at/inland

Launched on July 22nd, INLAND is calling on the public - people who care about the arts, culture, design,
community, supporting small businesses and the Canadian garment industry - to help us raise funds for
advertising. Help us get shoppers in the door and generate business for designers.

The INLAND Indiegogo Crowdfunding Campaign has raised nearly 20% of its $15,000 goal in under a week!
* Promote made-in-Canada apparel and accessory design. We believe in well-made, not mass-made.
* Support the Canadian garment industry, which impacts our local communities and economy
* Highlight, and educate shoppers about, the extraordinary design talent existing in Canada
* Provide a space for designers to network, collaborate, share their markets and connect with new customers
* Encourage consumers to seek sustainable and ethically produced products

Fan Expo

Hello friendly people of Toronto,

I'd like to come to this year's Fan Expo.  The ONLY reason is: a friend will be among the exhibitors, and I wanted to come by and say hi, and see her stuff, and her costume.

Otherwise, I've no interest in the event (with all due respect to all the fans out there!).

I do realize that to get in, I need to purchase a ticket somewhere onsite, and I also heard the lineups are completely insane (which is my biggest "ugh").

Are there any seasoned Fan Expo goers among you?  Have you got any tips for me on how to make this as painless as possible?

Thanks!

air show for free

Hey, can I pls get ideas on where to see the airshow for free? I don't want to go to the CNE alone. I'd rather go to a patio alone! Or a park. And enjoy the show for however long I can catch it. Welcome your suggestions!!!!

First ever ASL-interpreted Fringe performance!

Hey, D/deaf and HoH Torontonians:

Tomorrow (8 July) at 3pm is the first ever performance of a Fringe show interpreted into sign language! The Virginity Lost & Found, a drag sex comedy about a very special office of the Ministry of the Interior, will offer a fully interpreted performance with additional ASL services. Buy your tickets in advance at www.fringetoronto.com or turn up and take your changes at the door! Mooney on Theatre liked it quite a bit, and we hope you will, too.

(full disclosure: I'm the writer and performer of this show.)

Tarragon Theatre Extra Space, 30 Bridgeman Ave. All tickets $10.

Please note: Toronto Fringe has an ironclad No Latecomers policy. You will not be let in if you arrive even ten seconds late, and parking can be quite difficult during the Fringe. Leave extra time, and if you're early enjoy a cool drink at the shady beer garden onsite at Tarragon.

Other showtimes:

uly 10 07:00 PM, July 11 02:15 PM,
July 12 10:30 PM, July 14 03:30 PM,
July 15 12:00 PM

Fringe Megapost (Hopefully?)

The Toronto Fringe is in town! There are something like 130 shows going up this year, in addition to at least two dozen art exhibits, special events, award receptions, performance pieces, cocktail parties and backroom orgies. There are shows for all ages and interests (including about a dozen Fringe Kids shows specifically targeted at family audiences), and tickets for all performances are $10 or less.

Now Magazine and Mooney on Theatre have deployed teams of critics to assess every single show, and will be posting reviews on a daily basis--but the best way to find a fringe show has always been word-of-mouth.

What's looking good, toronto? What have you already seen? What are you going to see? What did you think about it? Go on! Spill!

Waterfront Blues Festival

Hello all. Wow it used to be so happening here and now it's fizzled down!

Anyways I'm wondering if anyone knows if the Waterfront Blues Fesitival is still happening at Woodbine Park today. I've called the number posted on the official site a few times now to no response and have left a voicemail as well.

If anyone knows anything it would be greatly appreciated :)

Do you want to help Toronto be represented at Burning Man?

We're going to burn a giant moose in the desert!

Every year at Burning Man there's a circle of effigies around the main man that represent various regions. Your local GTA burners are hard at work to build a giant moose to burn in the desert. It's a surprisingly expensive undertaking, so we could really use your help to make Toronto look good this year! Check out our site for more info; donate to our IndieGoGo campaign; or come out to Beaver, Damn! our crazy party at Goodhandy's on June 22!

Brown Canada, lead by CASSA, is a community-led history project to encourage South Asian communities to create and document their histories in Canada creatively, through writing, video, interviews, art, theatre or other means. Our collective entry point for this project is through the Komagata Maru incident of 1914, when a ship of South Asian people was denied entry into Canada due to restrictive immigration policy known as the continuous journey regulation. Through this project, we are creating an interactive website, offering educational and creative workshops, producing a short video as well as seeking to tour a short theatre piece to raise awareness of the incident and spark community dialogue within Ontario.

The Asian Arts Freedom School is an art-based radical Asian history and activism program for Asian/Pacific Islander youth in the Greater Toronto Area. Asian = South Asian, West Asian (a.k.a. Arab or Middle-Eastern), Southeast Asian, East Asian, and Central Asian,Pacific Islander, diasporic via the Caribbean and Africa…mixed-race, adoptee, suburban, hood…just got here or been here since the 1800s. Asian stretches from the Phillippines to Palestine, North China to Sri Lanka, Trinidad to Tibet, and all of it ends up in Toronto. We cover various artforms including writing, spoken word, music, visual arts, film, breakdancing, theatre and dance. We are currently running a drop-in creative writing workshop series in Victoria Park, and a theatre/drag musical program to be showcased during Pride Toronto 2012.

Events tomorrow (March 19)

Does anyone know of any interesting exhibits/events going on tomorrow? I have the day off, and it's my birthday, and I really don't want to spend it at home.

(By the way, I just went to the exhibit going on at MOCCA [pwyc] and it's fantastic and scary as shit. The exhibit is an art installation in a series of rooms. It's pitch black and terrifying. Sort of like a fun house. I had to put out my arms and take baby steps to walk through it without walking into a wall. Lots of weird flashing light sources, so it should probably be avoided if you have epilepsy....)
