This study analyses the mediating role of organisational mindfulness and employee involvement in ... more This study analyses the mediating role of organisational mindfulness and employee involvement in the relationships between competition strategy and supportive leadership and employee innovation adoption. To investigate this, a unique sample of 116 managers or owners of Dutch logistics companies completed a survey on innovation within their companies and the adoption of innovation by their employees. Results show that a firm’s competition strategy that values quality and not only costs, and the presence of organisational mindfulness, a firm’s cultural characteristic that makes employees alert to solve issues and improve effective cooperation, is positively related to employee innovation adoption. Moreover, the presence of supportive leadership has both a direct relation with employee innovation adoption, and an indirect one, namely mediated by organisational mindfulness. Between 2009 and 2013 a project has been executed in the Utrecht region to strengthen the workpla... more Between 2009 and 2013 a project has been executed in the Utrecht region to strengthen the workplace innovation capacity of SMEs (My Company 2.0). The participating companies were asked to fill in a questionnaire on the workplace innovation capacity of the company at two moments: at the beginning (T0) and at the end of the project (T1). The workplace innovation capacity was measured with questions about the organization (responds on changing demands in the environment), labor (employee flexibility), strategy (innovation with other companies) and market (improvement or renewal of products/services). We divided the companies (n=103) into two groups, namely companies that implemented an intervention an companies that did not. We found that the companies that received an intervention during the project had a significantly higher score with regard to the workplace innovation capacity at T1 compared to T0. This paper discusses the implementation of workplace innovation (WPI) in European companies. Base... more This paper discusses the implementation of workplace innovation (WPI) in European companies. Based on a 51-case study research in 10 EU Member States this article addresses four questions: 1] Why do companies apply workplace innovation; 2] What are different motives for management, employees and employee representatives to implement WPI; 3] What are important leverage factors for the implementation of WPI; and what is known about the (expected) effects according to management, employees and employee representatives? Results show that successful WPI is an interplay of management driven business goals and employee driven quality of work goals. Companies differ in their implementing strategies but constructive cooperation between management and employees is a key success factor for successful WPI. [Excerpt] A workplace innovation (WPI) is a developed and implemented practice or combination of ... more [Excerpt] A workplace innovation (WPI) is a developed and implemented practice or combination of practices that either structurally (through division of labour) or culturally (in terms of empowerment of staff ) enable employees to participate in organisational change and renewal and hence improve the quality of working life and organisational performance. Thi s report looks at reasons for enabling WPI, along with its adoption and implementation, and the impacts of it from the viewpoints of the organisation and management, employees and employee representatives. From the database of the third European Company Survey (ECS 2013), some 51 companies were selected from 10 EU Member States in which case studies were undertaken.

Hierdoor daalt de faalkans van innovatieprojecten en daarmee kunnen desinvesteringen worden verkleind. De slaagkans van innovatieprojecten neemt toe. Voor dit promotieonderzoek bestudeerde Peter Oeij 18 projectteams en hun innovatieprojecten. De nadruk lag op teamdynamiek. Hoe gaan teams om met kritieke incidenten in hun project, die aanleiding kunnen vormen voor falende projecten? En dus mislukte innovaties. De promovendus stelde vast dat twee kenmerken de kans op succes vergroten. Dat is ten eerste de aanwezigheid van een 'mindful' werkomgeving. Dat wil zeggen een teamklimaat waarin sprake is van vier factoren. Allereerst psychologische veiligheid, om fouten te mogen maken. Daarnaast een teamleerklimaat, waarin kan worden geexperimenteerd. This paper is premised on the observation that the potential of Work and Organizational (WO) Psyc... more This paper is premised on the observation that the potential of Work and Organizational (WO) Psychologists to successfully implement workplace innovation (WPI) practices and, in turn, improve the quality of work and organizational performance is greatly underused. One reason for this is that WPI practice often adopts a more specialised approach and single discipline focus rather than an integrated perspective. An integrated approach would imply understanding WPI from the strategy, structure, and culture perspectives. We outline ways in which WPI practice can appreciate and use the potential of WO psychology as well as how WO Psychologists can broaden their focus and strengthen their contribution to WPI practice.

Theoretical Approaches Supporting Workplace Innovation

The theoretical underpinning of Workplace Innovation (WPI) is badly needed. Currently, there are ... more The theoretical underpinning of Workplace Innovation (WPI) is badly needed. Currently, there are scattered theoretical approaches that focus on human relations, systems and work organisation, change processes, and strategic business choices or a combination of these. We propose a working definition of WPI and subsequently relate approaches and supporting theories to that definition. We do not intend to formulate a definitive theory, but to demarcate what we are talking about as a community of scientific, business/HR and policy practice, in order to set out a path for aligning future research and theory development of WPI. The purpose is to show how these approaches support WPI practices and its claims for results and to discuss what we can learn from each approach for WPI. This contribution regards WPI as a means to simultaneously improve organisational performance and the quality of working life.

HRO teams can keep failure to a minimum level due to high alertness and resilience. Project teams working on innovation management could benefit from HRO principles and thus reduce their chances of failure.Design/methodology/approachA survey among in total 260 team members and team leaders of project teams in innovation management was conducted to study the relation between, on the one hand, organizational features of HROs (“mindful infrastructure”) and HRO principles (adjusted as “innovation resilience behaviour”, IRB), and on the other hand, between mindful infrastructure and IRB and project outcomes.FindingsFrom the results it could be concluded that mindful infrastructure associates with IRB, and that IRB has a mediating role in the relation between mindful infrastructure and project outcomes. This is the introduction to this special issue of World Review of Entrepreneurship, Management an... more This is the introduction to this special issue of World Review of Entrepreneurship, Management and Sustainable Development (WREMSD) dedicated to workplace innovation and social innovation related to work and organisation. As technological and business model innovations alone are not sufficient to enhance opportunities for businesses and employment, awareness is rising that better use should be made of human talents and new ways of organising and managing. In order to make working environments more receptive for innovation, and to enable people in organisations to take up an entrepreneurial role as intrapreneurs, a shift towards workplace innovation can be observed. Workplace innovation is complementary to technological and business model innovation, and a necessary ingredient for successful renewal, in that it addresses a type of management that seeks collaboration with employees through dialogue and employee engagement. Consequently, not only improvements of the quality of work for employees become beckoning perspectives, improving the business is at hand as well through successful innovations in the organisation's functioning, its culture of cooperation and leadership and the implementation of changes in the domain of HR-practices.

Sociale innovatie wordt gedefinieerd als een strategisch ingegeven vernieuwing op het terrein van... more Sociale innovatie wordt gedefinieerd als een strategisch ingegeven vernieuwing op het terrein van organiseren en / of organisatiegedrag, c.q. gedrag in organisaties en is op te vatten als een vermogen van de organisatie. Dit vermogen kan bestaan uit vier bronnen: strategische orientatie, flexibel werken, slimmer organiseren en product-marktverbetering. Profit organisaties blijken vaker sociaal innovatief dan non-profit organisaties. Organisaties zijn het vaakst actief met product-marktverbetering en het minst vaak met flexibel werken. Naarmate organisaties vaker actief zijn met sociale innovatie is de organisatieprestatie beter. Daarentegen heeft sociale innovatie geen aantoonbaar effect op het ziekteverzuimpercentage.

Using data from a large-scale survey among companies in the Netherlands, it is demonstrated that there indeed is a positive relationship between workplace innovation on the one hand, and quantitative and qualitative organisational performance and commitment of employees on the other. No relation was shown between workplace innovation and the risk of work stress as reported by the employer. A relatively large flexible buffer was positively related to performance, but not to employee commitment. The presence of IT to support the work processes did have a weak relation with performance but did not show to have any relation to employee commitment. The conclusion is that workplace innovation matters to performance and to people in organisations.
