    Sepheris Secundus

Sepheris Secundus is a feudal world located in the Golgenna Reach Sub-sector of the Calixis sector in the Segmentus Obscurus. Sepheris Secundus is a world of immense mineral wealth with city-sized mines in which billions-strong hordes of serfs toil endlessly to meet quota.

Everyone born on the planet must have a master to whom they pay nine-tenths of their income. Its not only poverty that keeps the population of the world repressed but physical violence. One of the reasons that Sepheris Secundus’ culture is so primitive by many galactic standards is that weaponry and other technology is monopolised by the Crown.

The Queen’s Royal Scourges, though few in number, have such a technological advantage that they have been enough to put down a great many uprisings in the mines of Sepheris Secundus, and the planet’s history is littered with massacres where thousands of serfs fell to volleys of Lasgun fire.

When the genestealer cult of the Four-Armed Emperor finally revealed themselves after building their numbers over generations, even the Queen’s Royal Scourges and Sepheris’ Planitary Defence Forces were put on the back foot. Calls for aid were sent to the rest of the Imperium, but if the planet couldn’t hold out, then any help would come too late.

In the dark depths of Sepheris’ mines, a dark secret lurks, patiently biding its time…

It was at this point that the populace began to take matters into their own hands. Reports started to come in of ragtag groups of serfs coming to the aid of the troops, conducting daring assaults and vicious close combat fighting with whatever impromptu weapons they could find. They took heavy losses but helped to turn the tide and hold the Cult insurgency at bay long enough for Astra Militarum and Inquisitorial reinforcements to arrive.

Vicious battles raged in the mining complexes of the planet…

Once the genestealer uprising was quashed and Inquisitorial kill teams were sent in to destroy the insidious cabal at its heart, Queen Lachryma III had a quandary, the bands of peasants known as ‘The Daring Ones‘ (or Arditi in high gothic) had become folk heroes and this set a dangerous president for the rulers of Sepheris Secundus.

The solution was as machiovelian as it was brilliant. By royal decree, Astra Militarum regiments were created from each of the major mine complexes, thereby allowing the aristocracy to kill two aquilas with one bolt, ridding themselves of any disparate elements whilst also tapping in to the collective pride of the populace.

And so the Arditi regiments were born..

  • Ultramarine!

I have long been a fan of the Games Workshop board game ‘Betrayal at Calth‘ but, due to missing out when it was originally released, I have been piecing it together over the last couple of years.

Although I decided to use my Deathguard plague marine models in the stead of the original Word Bearers, I wanted to paint and collect the Ultramarines from scratch

My first acquisition was Captain Aethon and his terminator elite…

In the Archologies under the surface of Calth Captain Aethon leads his doughty Cataphractii terminators.
I’m particularly happy with the decal design on his fancy red cloak!
  • Bone ‘ead

When the Imperial hive of Pinguisburg Profundis was destroyed at the whim of the Inquisition for the crime of harbouring a genestealer cult it took Vertraag, an ogryn slave working in the underhive waste disposal sector primus, three months to dig his way to the surface. From there he walked, bewildered and aimless through the ash wastes of Cacas Tempestus…

  • Sneaky Gitz

Last Orktober I wrote a post about the completion of my long running Blood Axe kommando clan. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across two sneaky gitz who had somehow infiltrated my painting pile from that nefarious eBay!..

In all seriousness, I find that whenever I think I’ve finished one of my collections, my eye starts wandering and I inevitably end up adding to it. Having played a couple of enjoyable games of the new Killteam with my kommandos, I couldn’t resist picking up some of these fantastic models and having perfected my painting recipe over the years they were a real joy to paint!

So, now that I have more than enough greenskins for my needs, that’s an end to it it right?.. right?.. yeah, sure it is!

  • Immortal Idols

As the interlopers sneak through the undercity, they alight upon an ancient statue. Emerald onyx shimmers in the ever dancing flames of the braziers that flank the effigy. The icon of the immortal God-king is magnificent and noble in aspect and at its base, votive candles, minor Shrines and macabre offerings lie scattered in the dust of ages…

My first completed model of the new year has been one I’ve had knocking around for a couple of years and I have avoided mainly due to the fact that I don’t really enjoy painting terrain projects as much as miniatures.

However, using my random project generator meant I had little choice but to plow through and I’m glad I did! The scheme was pretty simple and with the addition of some enamel washes for weathering I’m quite happy with the final result. Most importantly it’s finished and ready the table and I’m now wracking my brain for a great scenario to showcase this cool terrain piece.

  • Wall Brother

Continuing from my last post about my primaris marine project (Unnumbered Sons) here is my latest addition…

Captain Ghaladem Enlerius of the Imperial Fists. A more upstanding warrior of the Imperium would be hard to find.

I have a five-man killteam of primaris assault troops and a librarian undercoated and ready to paint, but that’s a project for next year.

  • The Great Awakening

A lattice of arcane symbols blaze into life, bathing the smooth blackstone surfaces in a lambent emerald glow. The hum of archaic machinery resonates through the halls before a rhythmical thumping begins. Metal feet, in their thousands, clanging on stone as the phalanxes of soulless automata march in perfect lock-step.

Watching on from the shadows ill disciplined groups of hunched figures chitter amongst themselves. These debased forms are armed with gore-encrusted blades extending from their fingers and their contorted bodies are draped with flayed skins still oozing blood and viscera down their metal carapaces.

  • ‘appy Orktober Boyz!

It’s the most wonderful time of the WAAAARGHH!!!

This Orktober marks the close of my own greenskin project as I have painted the last model for my Blood axe mob.

The sneaky gitz of Urrgok Skulldagga’s Kommandos are ardent followers of the mighty God Mork. His ‘brutal kunnin’ is legendary throughout the galaxy and his boyz have undertaken many an audacious raid from their battle cruiser da BizMork.

  • Welcome to the jungle!

I have spoken in a previous post (read here) about the system I devised to help me to get more of my wargame projects to completion and having followed it for a year now, it has more than proven its worth. One such project, which started nearly 15 years ago, is my classic metal Catachan jungle fighters.

Whilst building my first ever Warhammer 40,000 army I couldn’t resist the urge to scratch my nostalgia itch for the 90’s Imperial Guard models that I used to drool over in the White Dwarf magazines as a kid. It would have been far to expensive to collect an entirely metal army so instead I decided on a small contingent of lead to add to my hordes of plastic Cadians.

The majority of the army was sold off piecemeal years ago, but my metal models remained and are now finally seeing some paint!…

  • Unnumbered Sons

With the new Warhammer 40k – Imperium magazine out, I am using it as an excuse to expand my budding Adeptus Mechanicus collection and to start two new ones, both the Necrons and Primaris space marines.

I racked my brains to decide which chapter to paint my new ‘uber’ marines before I realised that I can do them all!

Upon waking from his 10,000 year lie-in, Roboute Guilliman went on crusade with his shiny new space marines of the founding chapters, known as the ‘Unnumbered Sons’ or ‘Greyshields’. What if the Unnumbered Sons were kept on as an inter-chapter force to help the thousands of chapters to understand and cooperate with each other? This would allow me to paint any and all of the chapters!

With this in mind I started with the first two models I had at my disposal..

Chapter Master Adulphus Heller of my homebrew chapter, the ‘Iron Eagles’ space marines. He is a stern and uncompromising tactician who braved the Rubicon to ascend to become a Primaris marine and seconded himself to the Greyshields to better learn the ways of the other chapters astartes.

Lieutenant Tolmeres Dadrist of the Black Templars space marines. He is a bellicose and hot-headed warrior who leads from the front and is always to be found in the thickest fighting.

I am particularly happy with the finish on my Black Templar marine as I feel I’m getting the hang of using oils and am really happy with the Black armour in particular. With the next couple of marines out in a few weeks I look forward to deciding which chapter liveries to try my hand at next!
