Today’s the day folks! It’s April 5th, 2025, which marks exactly 50 years since Goranger first aired in Japan, so what better way to celebrate than to release a batch for the first half of the show that started a worldwide phenomenon!

Yes, I know it’s been a while since I posted. In fact, I was hoping to have the entire series ready by this point. But 2024 was a busy year for me and by the time December rolled around I only had about 30 episodes ready, so I figured the best move was to release the series in half-batches, with the first one on Goranger’s (and Super Sentai’s) 50th anniversary.

Combing the scripts wasn’t as fast as you might’ve imagined— over the years I’ve had a number of people give me feedback on my work, giving me suggestions and correcting my mistakes. The earlier episodes, in particular, had some more fixes because captions were not available and thus were mostly translated by ear. Even going back to my earliest work from nearly 3 years ago at the time, I was astonished to find out the things I missed the first time around. That said, I’m hoping to have caught all these mistakes so you all can have the best viewing experience for this phenomenal show.

Just to note a couple of changes, Ooiwa’s Kyushu dialect was changed up a bit so no more things like “buddy” attached to the end of names. As well, I made a note earlier that his battle cry should be “We’re Mt. Aso. We’ll erupt if we’re angry” but upon further review I believe I was actually correct the first time around, and it should be “I’m Mt. Aso. I’ll erupt if I’m angry.” Odoma is technically plural but the way Ooiwa uses it implies that it could also be singular. Best example is episode 28 when he says “Odoma Kiranger!” while fighting— clearly he wouldn’t be saying “We’re Kiranger!”

And with that, we’ve reached the finish line. This won’t be my last Goranger post, because I still have to do the series batch (which may or may not be split into two parts) to fix my earlier rendition of Kiranger’s Kyushu dialect, as well as any other mistakes I might’ve missed. That being said, this post is still a colossal milestone for me.

I started translating Goranger in September 2021. Needless to say, it was a huge undertaking for a one-man army: From timing to translating to typesetting to editing, I’ve lost count of how many hours over the past two years that I’ve spent on this endeavor. This was also my first time translating an entire series from scratch, so needless to say there was also a lot of learning on my end; I’ve looked back on my scripts multiple times (even after releasing them) to reflect on how natural my translations sound and how each line connects with the next, all the while capturing the original context without any excessive “flair.” Have I managed to succeed? Maybe not 100% of the time, but that’s just part of the learning process. Even with my imperfections, however, I’d still say that I’m rather pleased with the outcome.

And before I forget, there isn’t too much to say translation-wise about this batch, except for one particular episode. In episode 75, the MOTW is called “Sutōbu Kamen” (ストーブ仮面 ) with Sutōbu being katakana for the English word “stove.” Sounds simple, right? Well, not quite. “Stove” is an example of wasei-eigo, that is, a Japanese-made English word that differs in meaning compared to its English counterpart. (A classic example would be “mansion,” which really just means a condo/apartment in Japanese.) Similarly, the term “stove” in Japanese actually refers to a space heater; that’s why you see one on the MOTW’s head. As such, I’ve translated his name to be “Heater Mask,” since that is a much more faithful description of what he actually is. If you watch the episode, you’ll also see in context just how silly it would be to refer to all instances of Sutōbu as “stove” and not “heater.”

But overall, I hope you’ve enjoyed the journey as much as I did while working on this show. If you told me 3 years ago (when I was still a grad student) that I would one day translate the entirety of the first Super Sentai series all by myself, I would’ve looked at you as if you were crazy.

Happy 4th of July! Let’s celebrate with some Goranger. Only one more batch left! If you’ve been watching Goranger with my releases, then I truly appreciate your patience. Life is still very busy for me.

A few comments regarding this batch:

• Episode 64 is when the ED theme changes. There are two variants: one that plays from episodes 64 to 68, and another one that plays from 69 onwards (when the Variballoon is introduced).
• Episode 67 is special because it not only features the return of the original Kiranger, but also because it is the first episode where the Japan Action Club is in charge of the stunts. If you’ve noticed a significant change in the fight choreography, as well as the body language for the suit actors, this is why.
• Episode 69 features the debut of the Varikikyun, which I’ve translated as the “Variballoon.” The obvious reference to kikyuu (balloon) in its name was just too good not to do so.
• Episode 71 is the last episode with 007 in the series. The reason why is because her actress injured herself on set and was unable to recover in time for the series finale.
• Episode 72 finalizes the Goranger pose that would ultimately be used and referenced by future Super Sentai shows.

Finally, one last word about translation. If you’ve watched my previous releases of Goranger, you would notice that I would translate Ooiwa’s battle cry as “I’m Mt. Aso! I’ll erupt if I’m angry!” However, it has recently come to my attention that this is actually misleading. Ooiwa speaks in Kyushu dialect, and the pronoun he uses in his battle cry is actually Odoma, which is strictly plural (as opposed to Oidon, which is singular). As such, I have updated his battle cry starting from this batch, when he returns in episode 67. I’ve also, in retrospect, come to regret my decision in translating his honorific “-don” (which is the Kyushu equivalent of -san) as “buddy.” It doesn’t quite grasp the context well enough, and there are instances in which translating it as “buddy” doesn’t really make sense, particularly when he talks to people for the first time. As such, going forward I’ve decided to remove this honorific completely. I know mid-season changes aren’t very popular, but I hope you understand. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to let me know. I’ll also be updating the previous scripts for the series batch.

If you weren’t ready to take a break from Goranger after episode 42 (a major turning point for the series), then here’s another major turning point for you: episode 54. Afterwards, we get a new general, a new Kiranger, and a new actor for the Black Cross Führer. (Seriously though, his old actor was so much better, and it was definitely a shame to see how the writers toned down the character.) This batch also brings you The Bomb Hurricane, which comes in-between episodes 56 and 57.

A few other comments regarding this batch:

• Episode 50 has a riddle that cannot be fully localized due to its importance to the onscreen events. The answer to the riddle is that “seven rings” (wa ga nanatsu) is actually a hint for “trap” (wana).
• Episode 53 is the famous Baseball Mask episode. There are lots of baseball terminologies used throughout the episode, so please do correct me if I got any incorrect, and I’ll fix them for the series batch.
• Episode 57 has a guest appearance by Tsutomu Sekine, whom you might remember as the conductor from ToQger. Yes, this is him truly at his prime.
• Episode 59 was a pain in the neck to translate due to all the historical references and names sprinkled throughout the episode. If you’re wondering what a “Kimon Tonko” is, here’s your answer. Not even Shellfield’s blog was able to make that line out, so that’s saying something.

On a more personal note, things have been quite busy for me over the past few months. I’ve started a new job last November, and I was also studying for the JLPT N1 (which I ended up passing!) so I haven’t at all found the time to translate new episodes; the episodes in this batch were all more or less translated before my busy stretch, so it’s possible that the next release will take slightly longer.

And we’ve officially passed the halfway mark! If this were any other Sentai, we’d be done at this point, but alas! Episode 42 is also a major turning point for this show, so it’s also a perfect place to take a break if one needs it. That said, Snack Gon will be deeply missed…

And we’re back with more Goranger! This batch is very episodic in nature, so there’s not too much for me to say here. That being said, episode 36 is probably one of my favorite episodes of the series, since it really shows how awesome Kiranger can be when he’s at his best. That episode was so good that it even got a theatrical release (one of only 4 episodes to do so).

Back with more Goranger! We’ve got a fun variety of episodes in this batch, such as Ooiwa breaking into a mansion to stop an earthquake, Ooiwa and Peggy going undercover by joining the Black Cross Army, and the Gorangers trying to intercept an agent of evil (one of my personal favorites). We’re also introduced to two new generals, and we see our very first multi-episode arc.

You know, one of the cool things about Goranger is that because there are no mech battles, each episode feels inherently longer. The show is also very different from what’d you expect out of Super Sentai today (or even from what you’d expect to see in the 80s), and it makes crazy good use of its surroundings. In fact, most episodes take place in some pretty wild settings.

Fun facts: In episode 13, the MOTW references something called the “seagull sailors.” This is actually a children’s song from 1937 titled Kamome no Suihei-san. As well, starting from episode 18, the format for the ending previews change: Rather than describing what’ll happen in the next episode, the previews turn into riddles for kids to think about and tune in for the following week. This goes on for a while, until the old format returns.

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Well, I’m back and happy to announce that I’ve picked up Himitsu Sentai Goranger (Secret Squadron Goranger) as my next project!

Now, like the title suggests, this is a brand-new translation from scratch. In fact, all future projects I pick up will be fresh translations. The reason I did a scrub for my first project was to get familiar with Aegisub, and now that I’ve gotten comfortable with it, I’m happy to walk that extra distance to bring you a one-man subbing operation!

Some of you might be wondering, “Why are you doing Goranger? Didn’t Rampage-subs already finish this series years ago?” Well, yes, but there are some important things I’d like to point out:

1. Goranger actually has a bit of a messy subbing history, with one group doing the first 30 episodes and Rampage picking up where they left off. As such, there is a bit of inconsistency between versions.
2. Rampage only did this show on DVD, not Blu-Ray. There are remuxes of the original Rampage scripts with the Blu-Ray RAWs, but they do not always synch nicely with the videos.
3. Perhaps most importantly, of the first 14 or so episodes I’ve watched from Rampage, I’ve noticed quite a significant number of lines mistranslated. This is not entirely their fault, as there were no captions when they did this show, so everything had to be done entirely by ear. Now that there are captions, we can rectify these mistakes and provide more accurate translations [1].

Since Goranger has 84 episodes + a movie, I anticipate on releasing episodes in batches of 12, with the movie thrown in with the 49-60 batch (since it takes place between episodes 56 and 57).

Lastly, I do want to say that I am acutely aware that this is a massive project for a one-man army. This is why I did not make the decision to pick up this project lightly. In fact, I have been working on this since last September and have made enough progress to the point that I’m confident I will finish this series within a reasonable time frame.

[1] One small caveat: No one was able to rip the captions for the first 20 episodes, but thankfully mostly everything was easy enough to understand by ear.
