STOP calling it a DECOY plane. It was a BAIT plane.

When a threat is only hypothetical, it’s a decoy plane. This happened once before—WITH press knowledge.

When a threat is KNOWN to exist, leaving the press to face it uses them as BAIT.

So here’s where I tell you—as a Trump biographer—something media isn’t. Something I’ve published reports on.

Trump long ago replaced the leadership of his Secret Service detail with POLITICAL operatives.

So putting the journalists he hates in danger was partly a POLITICAL call.

In my book about January 6, PROOF OF COUP, I detail how Trump’s politicization—in the most literal sense—of his security team led to the Secret Service indirectly aiding and abetting the attack on the Capitol.

What looked like security decisions were POLITICAL.

The rest of your natural life—and then some.

That's how long we'll be cleaning up the mess of Trump and MAGAism.

The nation as it was before is lost. It won't return. What we seek to save now isn't what used to be.

It'll be something else altogether. It'll be what we make it.

To some people, the above seems obvious.

To others, it sounds preposterous.

To still others, it may even seem irrelevant, as it's possible Trump and MAGAism end America entirely in the next two years.

But if it doesn't, what emerges can't—and won't—be America as it used to be.

A broken political system got us here. A broken legal system. A broken corporate media ecosystem. Broken markets. Broken regulations. Broken statutes. Broken incentives. A broken, corrupted business environment.

A broken dominant cultural paradigm. And frankly, a broken culture.

I wonder how many Americans truly understand that corporate media is listening to precisely *none* of the criticisms leveled against it.

In a decade of the Trump era, they haven't changed their methods a whit and still don't understand why we see the WHCA dinner as contemptible.

No criticism penetrates. They continue to irresponsibly use anonymous sources, privilege access journalism, refuse to cut off sources known to lie, practice bothsidesism, give time to demagogues, air content they know false, conduct ineffectual fact-checking. No self-improvement.

And you know what? *For what their values are*, they do things exactly right. They value money and fame only, and they change nothing about what they do because they're getting enough of each. *You*, America, gave Maggie Haberman millions for her latest work of access journalism.

(🧵) My experience with lawyers on Twitter is summarized by the thread: people reading into things I wrote ideas I never said or thought, batting down principles I never advanced because they're clearly false, and treating burning a field of straw men as intelligence. So asinine.

1/ You have to understand that many lawyers—particularly trial lawyers like I used to be—have a love-hate relationship with attention. Suffice to say very few lawyers have broken through to have a large audience online and those who haven't are pissed about it, so what they do...

2/ ...is find lawyers with larger audiences and pick stupid fights with them—like this person is here. And they do that because sometimes, as here, they get rewarded with a response because they have pissed the object of their trolling off enough to generate one. Again, asinine.

The most sober, terrifying thing I can say as a Trump presidential historian is that what happened tonight was not about you, me, or America.

He's going to do what he's going to do based on how he convinces *himself* to do it.

Nothing else matters. He's not listening to anyone.

However it came to pass—childhood trauma, genetics, dementia—this US president is now functionally a psychopath. He lives in his own reality. He converses only with himself. All America is now downstream from a madman who's not listening to anyone or anything but his own madness.

The 25th was made for this moment.

It won't be used because Trump nominated cowards.

Impeachment was made for this moment.

It won't be used because America elected cowards.

The federal courts were made to stop this.

They won't because lifetime appointments reward cowardice.

I'm watching the Trump speech because I have to for my job and it's the most batshit crazy presidential speech I've ever heard in my nearly 50 years alive

Where it's coherent—which is only intermittently—it's on its face the largest tureen of turd soup any POTUS has ever served

I'm not in the first instance saying I don't understand how anyone could believe what the man is saying but rather how anyone could *understand* what he's trying to say

In the rare moments I think I understand what he's saying, it is the biggest most insane lie I have ever heard

What the President of the United States appears to be saying tonight is that our entire government is secretly run by China and has been for years and as far as evidence of that claim is concerned there really does not seem to be any whatsoever
