But, ads are ads and nobody likes them once you notice them. Its not just Play Store, they are everywhere. For desktop browsers, ublock origin is the antidote but for Google Play Store there is nothing. You just can't disable them. Not even with DNS based adblockers such as Adguard. They works fine upto a certain level in mobile browsers depending on which adblocker you use or which method you are use.
</p><p>If you have rooted Android, you can block ads in Google Play Store without depending on any adblocker. I actually stumbled upon this thing accidentally and I have shared this method in <a href="https://t.me/GappsLeaks/5" title="">my telegram channel</a> and Twitter (post deleted though). Since not everyone uses Twitter/telegram, so wanted to share the method on blog. </p><p>I am going to share the method first, then I will try to explain a little bit about how it works because it's not your usual adblocker.</p><h3>How to block ads? </h3><p>A rooted Android device is the first requirement. The two guys who say things like <i>"who roots their phone nowadays" </i>should notice what's possible with root, it's not about custom ROMs always. Anyways, the second thing you need is <a href="https://thespandroid.blogspot.com/2023/09/what-is-GappsMod-app-and-how-to-use-it.html" title="">GappsMod app</a>, read about it in detail if you are hearing it for first time. </p><div><br></div><div><b>Steps -</b></div><div><ol><li>Download this specific GappsMod version (<a href="https://github.com/assembleDebug/GAppsMod/releases/tag/Release" title="">GitHub</a> or <a href="https://t.me/GAppsMod/1535" title="">Telegram</a>) and Install. You need a specific version for this because the one provided on official GappsMod github repo will not work. (You can try lol). The specific version is built by the GappsMod dev himself and provided in his telegram channel, you can compare signatures if you don't trust me. </li><li>Open GappsMod app, open the sidebar drawer and tap on <b>Boolean mods</b>, then search for the following package - <blockquote>com.google.android.finsky.regular</blockquote></li><li>Now search for the following flag and turn it on - <blockquote>RetailMode__is_force_enabled</blockquote></li><li>Now open Play Store and Force stop it once and open, you will see the old UI. Wait for 2 minutes and force stop it again, now you will see the new UI. If you don't see it, just wait a few minutes and force stop & open.</li><li>Now go back to GappsMod app and <b>turn off </b>the flag which we enabled in step 3.</li><li>Now repeat the same thing we did in step 4 and you will see no ads this time.</li></ol><p>In my testing it showed ads at one place, but that's better than seeing ads everywhere. Also remember that this method is not permanent and once you clear data of Play Store, you have to do everything again. </p></div><h3>How it works</h3><p>If you ever visited a phone store you may have seen the phones attached to a cable and the phone is in demo mode. This is retail thing. When phones are placed for users to interact with them and experience it, they are in retail mode or demo mode. It means that some features are limited. Google added this <a href="https://source.android.com/docs/core/display/retail-mode" title="">Retail demo mode</a> in Android with Android 7.1.1.</p><p>As stated in demo mode page - "<i>Devices are set up for retail demo using a device owner app to ensure that device usage is restricted to certain demo mode apps only. End users must not be able to add a personal account on a retail demo device". </i>It just means functionality is limited when phone is in demo mode. Google Play Store has this demo mode support and we are using this loophole to disable ads because <b>Play Store does not show ads in demo mode</b>.</p><p>With the above flag which I said to turn on, we are just forcing the demo mode in Play Store. So the actual loophole is - when we turn off the flag, Play Store should reset everything back to normal, but it doesn't. It doesn't revert the things related to ads. These flags are controlled by Google and they can enable and disable them using their servers for specific Google apps and specific features.</p><div></div><div><p>Some flags are plain text and sometimes they are just numbers. Plain text flags can be easily read and we can guess what they do, but when it comes to flags which are numbers, they are kind of encrypted flags and only Google knows which flag is doing which thing.</p></div><div></div><div><p>An average user have no control over these switches which Google likes to flip often, but if you have a rooted Android phone, you can easily do it with GappsMod app.</p></div><div></div><h3>What's is GappsMod ?</h3><div><p>GappsMod (formerly GoogleDialerMod) is an app built by <a href="https://github.com/jacopotediosi" title="">Jacopo Tediosi</a> which allows you to switch flags present in the GMS phenotype database. It is an Open source app and is available to download on <a href="https://github.com/jacopotediosi/GAppsMod" title="">GitHub</a>. Its a well built app with Material You design and an annoying minor bug (will explain later in article) In addition to flipping flag switches in GMS, you can also flip switches of Google Play Store which has its own separate phenotype database.</p></div><div></div><div><p>GappsMod also have some prebuilt options to enable certain in Google Messages and Google Dialer. Depending on which version of these apps you use, they can work completely fine or they just don't because Google often changes, adds and remove flags.</p></div><h3>Features of GappsMod</h3><div><ul><li>Enable and Disable flags.</li><li>Search and filter flags. Enabled/Disabled/Changed/Unchanged</li><li>Suggested mods (enabling some features in Google Message and Phone)</li><li>Enabled/Changed flags are highlighted </li><li>Revert Flags by package name or revert everything.</li></ul></div><div></div><h3>Things to know before using GappsMod</h3><div><p>The first and most important thing is that you need a rooted phone. It's not possible without it (not with shizuku or adb as well). There are some other things you should know if it's your first time using GappsMod</p></div><div><ul><li>Package Name - Each Google app have a particular package name and there can be multiple package names in each app. Sometimes it is same as the app package name itself like com.google.android.dialer and sometimes it's like com.google.android.dialer#com.google.android.dialer. GappsMod displays app icons before package name, so it's easy to recognise which package name belongs to which Google app.</li><li>Flags - Each package name have their own set of flags. Some flags are enabled by Google already and some are disabled. Sometimes a feature can work by enabling a certain flag but also can require enabling multiple flags for a feature depending on how Google is doing it.</li></ul></div><h3>How to use GappsMod </h3><div><p>Using GappsMod is simple as it can be. You have to choose package name first and it will list all flags associated with that package name. The difficult thing is - if you are looking flag for a particular feature in a particular app, then you have to go through all the flag or search a term similar to the feature. You may find what you need or you won't because Google does not keep every feature behind flags. There are more things involved and it simply can not be explained easily. </p></div><div></div><div><p>If you are looking for particular flags, I have a channel on telegram where I share flags which you can use to enable new features.   Firefox on Android recently released the newly designed browser which brought
  newly designed tab switcher, search bar location customization, tab
  collections, and access to limited add-ons. These changes, as compared to old
  version of Firefox left some users in anger because the new Firefox took away
  the ability to use thousands of other Firefox add-ons. Meanwhile Firefox said
  that full add-on support will come again in future. For now they are focusing
  on improving other things.

  The first thing I want to highlight is the improved search experience. In
  earlier version, when bottom toolbar was enabled the search bar went to top
  when we wanted to search for anything. This behavior is changed a little and
  the bottom bar stays on bottom while we type anything for search.

  When Firefox rolled out new version with overhauled design, one thing was
  surely missing - Download Manager. Firefox finally added a Download Manager
  section which can be easily accessed by three dot menu. As a bonus, they have
  also added support for external download managers. Apps like ADM and IDM on
  Android will surely benefit from this which are more advanced download
  managers as compared to default download managers of Android.

  accounts on a website. Suggested logins is a nice addition to Firefox, it adds
  an "Suggested Logins" strip on top of your keyboard whenever you are about to
  sign in on a website. If you have multiple accounts on a website, you can
  choose which account information you want to be auto-filled for signing in.

  Google finally decided to roll out automatic dark/light theming to all beta
  users. It was only available earlier only to some users, just Google's server
  side things. You need Gboard's beta version 9.7 for enjoying this new feature.

  running Android 10. There is no idea if it will make its way to Android 9 or

  Another thing is worth mentioning that on Android 10, if you change your theme
  to "System Auto", the gboard will only use default light and dark theme. You
  can not set which theme to use when system switches to dark mode or light
  mode, which is an awkward thing. Google still have chance to improve it and
  let users decide which theme user want in dark and light mode but I doubt
  Google will be listening to users this time.

Now lets talk about the things that you can not do with this. The first one is that you can not login with you YouTube/Google account in this app. This means that all your favorites and playlist won't appear in this client magically. The one motto of this app is to keep it as google-less as possible. Some folks out there really don't want to be tracked about what you watch and then target you with specific ads and collect all kind of personal identifiable information about you.<br />

Second things is that it can not provide you MP3 files of a video because YouTube does not provide MP3 files which could be downloaded directly. Other sound format that it provide for downloading can be easily played in almost all music player which you can find on play store.<br />

There might be some things that you may miss from while using this client but they are not something you can not live without. Considering all the good features it provides, it is my personal on the go app for accessing YouTube.<br />

<b>Substratum </b>provides the ability to theme your system and third party apps. Substratum has been here since android nougat and its still being managed. It was possible for people to use substratum even without root , but only upto Android 8.1. With Android Pie google has restricted the use of overlays on non-rooted devices. There is no to install them without root.<br />

So now if you are on Android 10 and want to use substratum themes then you need a rooted device. <strike>At this moment of writing this,  Android Q is still in beta stage and has been available to the app developers and for different devices for testing their apps and giving feedbacks.</strike><br />

There are new themes started popping up for Android 10 on play store. I will list all the Android Q supported substratum themes here in this post once they come out and will try to keep the post updated.<br />

For using substratum themes on Android Q , you need to be rooted with Magisk and need to install the  <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.substratum.lite&hl=en" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><b>Substraum Lite </b> </a>app. This is the lite version of the popular Substratum theme engine. The main substratum theme engine app does not support Android Q as of now but we can expect to get it working in near future. Substratum lite supports Android Q and still being developed and improved for better compatibility with android.<br />

Before you jump to reading instructions, the most important thing I want to tell you is that you need ROOTED device in order to use substratum on Android Q Beta. With Android Pie google has blocked all ways of installing overlays saying that - The Overlay Manager Service (OMS) is intended for device manufacturer's use. OMS, in its current form, is not designed to be a generic theming feature. <br />

With Android Q, google has changed many things most of them are regarding the internals such as dynamic system partitions. At this moment substratum app does not work properly with Q which may be rectified in future but for now I found a workaround to install susbstratum themes.There are not many Android Q compatible themes as of now. It has its navigation bar at the bottom of the app and makes it easy to reach settings and other options. It also provides live CPU/GPU speed , input/output speed, info about wakelocks, RAM, Zram, thermal temperatures of different things and kernel logs too.<br />

It has a script manager which allows you to write a shell script and it will get automatically executed every time your phone boots. It has a nice dark mode by default but you can that to light from settings. If you enable the battery monitor , it will start showing you the battery stats in notification bar which details of idle battery drain and on screen usage drain percentages. Its a very useful feature for me. <br />

There are various tools to unpack boot images of Android for windows, mac and
linux. The most compatible is Android Image Kitchen tool which has been created
by XDA recognized developer Osmosis. This is just one tool in his long list of
tools. There are some situations when we need to unpack boot or recovery images
to modify them or port them from another device having same chipset and almost
same specifications. <br />

Not everyone have a PC or Laptop to do this this kind of thing so some people
look for ways to do it on their Android Phones. Once again Osmosis did a great
job in making the Android Image Kitchen work on Android. Now you don't need PC
to unpack or repack boot images. The only thing you need is a rooted device with
a custom TWRP installed. If you have both, its very easy to unpack images , just
like we do it on PC with Android Image Kitchen.<br />

<h2><span>What you need ? </span></h2>
• A rooted android phone.<br />
• Magisk 18.0 or later<br />
• Terminal emulator / Root browser Classic installed.<br />

Now there are two different ways which you can use to unpack boot imgs. First
one involves the use of terminal emulator only and second only involves the use
of Root Browser Classis app only. I am going tell you about both of them. Before
we move to those steps , first we need to install AIK-Mobile Installer.<br />

<b>Installing Android Image Kitchen Tool</b><br />
<br />
This doesn't require much work, all you have to do is open Magisk Manager and flash AIK-Mobile-Installer zip. You can also flash this zip through TWRP. After reboot we are ready to unpack boot/recovery imgs.<br />
Lets learn about unpack/repack img methods.<br />
<br />
<h2><span> Terminal Emulator Method </span></h2>
Before proceeding to unpacking boot/recovery imgs you need boot/recovery imgs
first. When you have them, move the boot.img or recovery.img to
<b>/data/local/AIK-mobile</b> directory using any root explorer app. You can
unapack only one img at a time.<br />

Proper Instructions <br />
<ul>
  <li>
    Move your boot.img or Recovery.img to
    <b>/data/local/AIK-mobile</b> directory.
  </li>
  <li>
    Open Terminal emulator and then execute the following commands (italic words
    only) one by one - <br />
    → <i>su</i> (Grant root permission)<br />
    → <i>aik</i><br />
    → <i>sh unpackimg.sh </i> (Script will automatically detect the boot.img in
    that directory)
  </li>
  <li>
    After above command your boot.img will be extracted in the
    <b>/data/local/AIK-mobile </b> directory, you can see the extracted boot img
    in that directory with any root file explorer.
  </li>
  <li>
    After you have done making changes or whtever you needed to do with
    extracted boot.img you may want to repack it again.
  </li>
  <li>
    To repack the extracted boot.img again open the terminal emulator again and
    execute this command.<br />
    → <i>sh repackimg.sh</i>
  </li>
  <li>
    Above command will repack the boot img again and you will see a new
    <b>image-new.img</b> in the same directory. This is the new boot.img, you
    can flash or do whatever you want with it now.
  </li>
  <li>
    To cleanup the mess i.e the folders we get after unpack and repack of img ,
    execute this command in terminal. This will also remove the image-new.img
    file.<br />
    → <i>sh cleanup.sh</i>
  </li>

<h2><span>Root Browser Method </span></h2>
This method is for those who don't want to write coomands again and again to
unpack and repack imgs. <br />
<ul>
  <li>
    Open Root broswer classic app ,grant root permission and move your
    boot/recovery img to <b>/data/local/AIK-mobile</b> directory.
  </li>
  <li>
    In AIK-mobile folder we have unpack , repack and clean shell script which
    are executable scripts.
  </li>
  <li>
    If you want to unpack img , just tap on <b>unpackimg.sh</b> file ,you will
    see a script handler popup, checkmark the "execute script as root" and
    finally click on <b>Execute</b> button. You will see the unpacking process
    there.

    To repack the img , tap on repackimg.sh file and then tap on execute button
    just like we did for unpacking the img. This will repack your img and you
    get new img named "image-new.img" as final result.

    To clean up folders, tap on cleanup.sh and execute. This will clear all
    folders and files created after unpacking and repacking.
